49ers vs. Bengals: Ask Niners Nation

Hey everybody, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. The 49ers meet your Bengals this Sunday in a battle of 1-1 teams that have plenty of question marks thus far. Given the turnover in San Francisco in terms of both players and coaches, I'd imagine you guys have a few questions about the team. Consider this a basic open thread to ask any questions you want. I'm going to post a FanShot at Niners Nation to make sure we get some readers over to help out.

Also, someone from here will be posting a FanPost at Niners Nation this week. If you want to get involved in that discussion and haven't registered at NN yet, there's a one-day waiting period. If you register, post a comment here and I'll approve it earlier than the one day.

The 49ers are 1-1 coming off a tough overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers led 14-0 in the second quarter and had a ten point lead in the fourth quarter so this one stings a bit. The team continues to be a work in progress on offense and defense. The one area that is consistently excelling thus far is special teams where Andy Lee leads the NFL in punting, Ted Ginn is among the league leaders in punt and kick return average, and David Akers remains old reliable.

The 49ers offense has struggled the most lately, dealing primarily with inconsistency. At times they've looked like world beaters on offense, but more often they've struggled to establish rhythm. The running game is struggling so it will be interesting to see how the Bengals defense responds to that.

Alex Smith has been among the league leaders in completion percentage this season. Some of that is due to improved play on deeper passes, but a good chunk it is due to game-planning with some shorter routes that play to his strengths.

So, fire away with questions and we'll have plenty of answers for you.
