Lately I've been following the family feud initiated by A Message To The Fans-Doc Scratch. This article gets my thumbs up if only because of the conversation it started. It got my goat because I have a tendency to be on the realist/pessimist side of many Bengal discussions.I will allow that my offense may be misplaced for I am not the kinetic downer and buzz-kill That I believe Doc(if I may call you by your first name)was referring to. I do, however understand why these fans respond to a Never Ending Story of epic failure with ceaseless negativity, and how they can still call themselves fans. We are Fanatics! Bengal zealots! We have no choice. There is no cut off switch.
We are all Bengals
fanatics because of something more than choice and winning records. Some were fathered in(me,1973). Others are simply drawn in for reasons beyond my understanding. What I do understand is that no one is a fair weather Bengal fan.We tell each other to go elsewhere, find another team to root for, another site to vent on.If most of us wanted to or could have find another we would. We are not so priveleged as the Carls, Corys, and Carsons(and Ochocincos) we have cheered on(and paid) for years, only to see them leave for greener pastures as if they weren't a part of the Brown pasture problem. I am stuck in the Jungle and don't want to leave. I want a winner.
I love our new look, feel and attitude, but I thirstily drink from the same pitcher of generic Kool-Aid (Flavor-Aid)every year. Each year, before any games are played, my Father and I remind each other that we're undefeated. Each year I believe. This year I believe. But when I get down and need to be talked back from the ledge, who can I go to other than my Bengal Family. You can remember when Brooks was James, not Ahmad. When Kenny was Anderson, not Irons. When Johnson was Pete, not Ochocinco.Together we look forward to Smith being Andre as a Pro Bowler, not Akili. We are all we got. That being said, maybe some things can be done to keep us as family from bumping heads. Fanatics who vent may want to insert a small (v)-for venting-before posts to indicate their following tyrade. That way optomists can avoid such posts or play the role of therapist when they see fit. I do not,on the other hand, find it to be logical when one type of FANATIC tells another type of FANATIC that their fanataciscm(may not be a word)is inappropriate. Duh, we're Fanatics. We go shirtless to the Ice Bowl. Stop looking for logic. We are nutz.I reserve the right to cheer and cry as the situation dictates. I will defend your right to do the same. I will not criticize people for actually having valid feelings and expressing them where their opinions won't fall on deaf ears. As a Bengal fanatic I hear and empathize with your pain as well as feel your hope for the future. Who else will? Who Dey!
