Labor Day Open Thread

The Bengals had a fairly busy labor day. They signed Chase Coffman to the final spot on the practice squad and they announced that tight end Mickey Shuler, who the team signed on Sunday as their third tight end (which caused them to waive Coffman in the first place) failed his physical and has been released and that there is one more roster spot.

So, while you put all your white clothes away and close up your pools, you have a lot to think about. There are a lot of players available that the Bengals could sign to their last active roster spot.

Who should it be? Discuss away.

Will Allen or Jon Wade

Wade played okay and is up to date with Zimmer’s schemes. Allen has been the far superior NFL player and still has the skills to be an effective CB.

Guys I like the way this is going!

Mike Brown should get the fans involved let us decide the 53 roster spot! Put up a poll on Bengals.com! Will Allen gets my vote!

That’s a rec.

Definitely has to be a CB...

We may be getting Jones back, but a neck injury is always suspect. Allen would definitely be a good pick-up.

Here's one for ya,

I’m sitting here watching Sports Center (shut up OK!) and I see that Roger GODdell has punished Jim Tressel. If you don’t know, Jim Tressel was hired by Indy to be a gameday replay consultant. He is now suspended for the first 6 games. WTF?!!!!!
OK (insert homerism), but why is another company (NFL) other than the NCAA implementing a punishment on someone that has done something wrong in the eyes of another entity. This doesn’t make any sense. This wrong-doing has no adverse effect on his job with Indy or the league. It has everything to do with the NCAA, in their eyes. Roger GODdell is not the almighty GOD! Something should be done about this. The NFL is stepping over the boundaries of ethics. Even though Tressel may have, while employed by the NCAA. If Tressel broke the rules in the NCAA, what gives GODdell the right to hender his employment in the NFL, or anyone else (Pryors 5 game suspension) for that matter..
What happened in the NCAA, should not not reflect any employment in the NFL, unless it’s a criminal act. Then that’s a different matter…..

THANK YOU

This is exactly correct. It’s another case of the NFL trying to maintain good relations with the company that acts as their free minor league system, and it’s total bull.

At least they came up with their own reason for suspending Pryor, even though it was pretty weak. What is their reasoning for the Tressel suspension?

Miguel Cairo is so last week.

by sexsalad on Sep 5, 2011 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

ESPN said that

it was in reference to the Pryor suspension, NFL didn’t want to show the" pick and choose" clause (if you will) on punishment. Which is Bullshit! IMO, they both should not have repercussions, the NCAA is separate from the NFL.

by WHYUS!! on Sep 5, 2011 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, that's even bigger bullshit than if they did it without reason at all.

Because, according to them, Pryor’s suspension wasn’t for his college infractions.

Miguel Cairo is so last week.

by sexsalad on Sep 5, 2011 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

But the

NFL has said they are not indirectly related. Then what is it related too? I have yet to read or hear of what it is he(Pryor) has been suspended for other than the NCAA infractions.

by WHYUS!! on Sep 5, 2011 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

what a mess the NFL has made for themselves, painting themselves into a corner

Technically in cases like Pryor’s, the player is not made elgible for the supp draft.

In this case they made an exception, but tried to justify it by giving him his college suspension (which is crap), because they didn’t want to open the door for a flood of Pryor-type of kids to come out via the supp draft.

Then his coach gets hired, and now they give in to pressure to give his coach the same suspenson so that Pryor’s suspension doesn’t look hypocritical.

But at the end of the day, the NFL has suspended Pryor and Tressel for things that have nothing to do w/the NFL. The NFL looks foolish at best.

I hope that Pryor wins his appeal of the suspension, just on principle because of how the NFL is acting – and because i don’t like the NFL’s “blackout rule”…unrelated, i know… :-)

by ephram on Sep 6, 2011 7:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I totally agree with you, but since they punished Pryor they had to punish Tressel as well.

At least he’s consistent (even though he shouldn’t have punished Pryor in the first place).

This is

an act for the NFL to try and “Save Face” for the NCAA, IMHO. The NCAA is taking a major hit in all directions and are about to lose their stance against the colleges. That goes for both football and basketball… I think they asked for help.

by WHYUS!! on Sep 5, 2011 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Again, they claim they didn't suspend Pryor for his college infractions.

This suspense is as idiotic as it gets.

Miguel Cairo is so last week.

by sexsalad on Sep 5, 2011 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, see

If one of the reasons Pryor came to the NFL was to dodge his suspension (and you have to imagine that’s one of the things that forced him to come out early), then it’s not exactly something the NFL can ignore. It’s like someone getting banned here, making an alt, and coming back.

by Doc Scratch on Sep 6, 2011 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

No, it isn't.

The NCAA and NFL are supposed to be completely separate. That would be like someone getting banned here, then going to a different SBN blog on the same account. Which you can do.

I just drafted the Bengals in my Fantsay Draft, Couldn't help it

I took Benson as my 3rd RB/Flex player in the 5th ROund
Green in the 11th, Backing up Maclin, Roddy White, and Crabtree
Took Simpson in the 12th
Gresham in the 16th to back-up Whitten
Nugent in the 16th

I feel foolish but optimistic.

I tried having a homer pick but...

in my 8 team money league, I felt all Bengals were too risky. The only Bengals taken were Benson and AJ Green

This is a 12 team league

More players taken

That's better than our 20 team league.

But, a 20 team league should be interesting..

by WHYUS!! on Sep 5, 2011 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

20? Wow!

In a 20 team league…..you’ll have guys like Andre Caldwell as your WR2 and M Hasselbeck as your QB

The most i’ve ever done is 16, which is the cincyjungle league that drafts tonight.

by ephram on Sep 6, 2011 7:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Ours is the Cincyjungle2 league

Which drafted this past Sunday night.. I think I did alright. I got Cedric Benson, Dwayne Bowe, Greg Jennings, Ryan Matthews, and Pierre Thomas. Matt Cassel and McNabb are my QBs.
Not too shabby, I think…

Looks solid for a 20 team league

by jim0ijk on Sep 6, 2011 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

not bad...

Benson is a solid flex option becuase he gets all of Cincy’s carries. Better than what most will have for a flex player.

I’m a huge Nugent fan, but i’m afriad his offense may not give him enough scoring chances.

Gresham & AJ as late as you took them were good picks. You obviously weren’t drafting with locals, or those 2 would have been taken much higher :-)

by ephram on Sep 5, 2011 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt I will get Green or Gresham in CincyJungle draft tomorrow

Nugent may get a lot of FG attempts if we don’t have turnovers.

I felt I drafted the Bengals I did for value except SImpson, I am ready to drop Simpson, but he is a potential sleeper and is my 5th WR, so I thought I could accept risk.

yeah, if you draft in a league w/a lot of Bengals fans

your likelyhood of ‘stealing’ a Bengals player late is quite diminished.

It’s my first time in the cincyjungle draft.
which team is yours?

benson is a steal in almost every draft. barring injury, he’s a lock to see 300+ carries… only 8 RBs even did that last year, yet he’s going as the 25th (or later) RB.

take benson as your flex and you’ll be pleased

I once made a team in a throwaway league.

It was ENTIRELY Bengals players. I won two games.

I’m thinking of doing the same this season.

by Aether on Sep 6, 2011 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

If they don't see anyone they like or think will be an improvement or what we have

Maybe they just decide to pick up a Brown’s player that was cut. They have a new coach as well and maybe we pick one up so we can get the inside scoop on what they like to do. I know it’s far-fetcheched but unless they find someone who they feel will be upgrade who knows because who ever we pick up (unless they are an upgrade) will probally be cut in 4 weeks when Bobbie returns anyways

Take the best PS player in the league

And stick him on the 53-man roster

See: Dezmon Briscoe, Tampa, 2010

by wiseking on Sep 6, 2011 1:34 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Except Briscoe wasn't placed on the 53-man roster.

Not immediately, anyway. That’s why it was such a big deal at the time. We offered Briscoe a PS spot (at the usual league minimum for PS players – all teams usually do this), but Tampa offered him something close to the minimum for a 53-man roster rookie to sit on their PS for a while.
It went against convention in the league, and that’s why it was somewhat controversial.

by Aether on Sep 6, 2011 3:22 AM EDT up reply actions

but at the end of the day

the Bengals had the option of selecting who they thought their best WR’s were, and placed them on their 53 man roster. D Briscoe did not make that list, and we lost him.

Now, they may have thought he was one of the best 53 and decided to gamble by placing him on the PS, assuming that nobody would swoop in and take him. But if that was their plan, it failed miserably.

Ultimately they had the first choice to determine his fate of adding him to the 53 or floating him out there to be taken, and they decided his was not one of their top 53. And now he is a Bucc.
