Comparison To The 2011 Bengals: 15 Players From The 2010 Roster Are Gone

CINCINNATI, OH - SEPTEMBER 1: Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis looks on during an NFL preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts at Paul Brown Stadium on September 1, 2011 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Colts won 17-13. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said it on Sunday:

“I know we’ll be a better team than the 4-12 team,” Lewis said when asked at a Paul Brown Stadium news conference if this is a better team. “There’s not the star power on paper that maybe we possessed last year. But when it comes down to it, as our guys are calling it 'we’ll be all in together' and that’s the best statement we can make heading into the regular season.”

There is absolutely no doubt about the changes this team has faced, compared to one year ago. There were 15 players that made the Bengals 2010 NFL roster that are no longer associated with the team (or pouting about being traded). Two players from that year have joined the practice squad this year and four players on last year's squad are excluded off this year's roster due to injury or suspension.

Now the 2011 Bengals 53-man roster is still one shy of being fulfilled after tight end Mickey Shuler failed his physical on Monday. That being said, here's a comparative look at the two rosters, separated by a calendar year.

More upside with this 53...

…but it all comes down to the W column, and this season’s schedule looks softer at the start of the season than at the end. Let’s hit the ground running smashmouth ball in September.

Younger and better

The new leaders on the field are all about team, not themselves. I am thrilled that Whit took the opportunity to step up and make this team his. In addition, having a real fullback gives us more consistency with the run – and will improve our YPC. We are weaker at QB just due to inexperience, but have greater dimensionality overall on offense. I’m disappointed we didn’t add a quality G (like Waters) to the rotation, but the starting OL is decent. If we sustain an injury we’re in trouble. We lost Joseph, but the young DL is stronger than last year and hopefully we finally have a solid rush taking the heat off the CB’s.

Special teams

Should be improved as well, and having more of the bigger backup safeties and quicker LB’s helping on ST will be interesting.

O-Line

The O-Line is what I’m worried about. With a rookie QB I would have liked to see the interior O-Line strengthened. Hopefully with the running game and the quick passes, we can cover up the pass blocking deficiencies.

Just don't turnover the ball

If Benson keeps his hands on it and Dalton avoids Palmeritis, the defense is honest enough to keep games close

Doesn't matter how good the D is.....

if the offense isn’t moving the ball, and at least flipping the field, the defense is going to have a hard time.

Wish I were as optimistic as some of you. The soft schedule helps some, but I still expect a pretty poor season.

Key thing is turnovers.

With field position, as long as we don’t turn the ball over and give the opposition a short field, we should be ok. Huber is looking pretty good, and our ST coverage teams look better, too.
Of course, even a 50 yard punt will only go to the OPP 40 if you stall on your ten yard line.

What do we expect Marvin to say this years team is worse than last years?

Safeties!!!!

Holy crap we finally filled the void on the safeties .. A big glaring hole coming outta last season that’s the major difference and the LB core seems solidified

this team really does...

Remind me of the 2009 Squad; in a number of ways, the biggest being that everyone (ESPN, Joe Reedy, National Media, ETC.) is expecting the worst; But on paper this team could really be a big surprise, not Super Bowl surprise, maybe not even playoff surprise but I’m willing to say confidently 8-9 wins! WHODEY!

The early soft schedule should be a positive....

but this team is notorious for being slow coming out of the gate and finishing strong when the games become insignificant.

This team hasn't hit the field yet. Past is the past nobody knows the future

Lets not burden our team or our outlook with the past. The past may be prologue but lets not make any assumptions – positive or negative and give them 3-4 games to get their feet under then. We just may be tetter than many think. It could happen. This is one of those years where you don’t just measuer the team based on wins alone. This is the first time in a long time where I see signs that they are rebuilding the right way.

At least heading in the right direction.
