Today is the moment of truth. The Cincinnati Bengals win this weekend, they're in the playoffs. But that game doesn't kickoff until 4:15 p.m. We have the Jets and Dolphins to watch, along with all of the pregame coverage. Regardless. Your open thread until the Bengals kickoff starts now.

Please Gruden, hear me out!

Going for the jugular does not mean you need to throw bombs and risk interceptions. If we march up the field with a long dink and dunk drive, DO IT AGAIN! Then DO IT AGAIN! AND AGAIN until they stop you or start cheating up so bad that Green or Simpson can get free without safety help over the top. Please play smart!! Bombs in the wind are a recipe for disaster!

News flash

Got a report from ESPN that a number of Steeler fans are coming to the PBS wearing their mustard and stains to cheer on the Bengals to win because they could not get tickets in Cleveland and they can keep an eye on the squealers via the scoreboard. Keep them in their place and remind them the Bengals are coming.

haha

I read that Marvin might not have certain game scores posted so the team doesn’t get distracted. How funny would it be if that game is one of them.

Also...

there’s always a pocket of Steelers fan at PBS, no matter what. Some people just like being a part of the NFL experience, regardless of what team it is. I have a Bengals fan friend out in Atlanta and he goes to 4 Falcons games a year just because he likes for some reason, the environment of the NFL.

Enjoy The Game !

Here in Southwestern Virginia, they decided to show the freakin Pit-Cle game which is just wrong for so many reasons. I gave the station quite a tongue lashing and am probably now 86’d…LOL

by david in upstate SC on Jan 1, 2012 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

At least those games

directly influence the Bengals Playoffs. PIT/Cle? Not so much.

by KSE on Jan 1, 2012 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

Pit/Cle

Does have implications. If Cleveland beats Shittsburgh , Ravens can win the 2 seed with a loss too.

by WHYUS!! on Jan 1, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

It has no implications for us...

was the point. Pittsburgh winning or losing has no effect on the Bengals getting in the playoffs (unless the dreaded SOCO plays a factor, which is unlikely). Thus, my reaction to david feeling let down although those two games do play a factor for the Bengals.

by KSE on Jan 1, 2012 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

I think these games will be pretty good though

not the point

my point is that I live in the AFC territory of Tennessee. That game could directly influence the

Yep.

ESPN said they were getting gusts in the 40s at the Stadium. Going to be interesting game if the wind persists.

by KSE on Jan 1, 2012 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

This changes the game.

I like Dalton to Green over Flacco to whoever is still healthy.

A base of 25mph wind with gusts to 40 turns it into a ground game.

How do you feel about Benson behing Livings and McGlynn over Ray Rice? Yeah, me too.

This makes the game far more of a nailbiter.

I think they can still pull it off, but I’m going to be rooting hard for Miami and KC all the same.

by Skyhook on Jan 1, 2012 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

I think the big difference...

is going to be the Nugent/Cundiff battle. May turn into a game where FG and missed FG play a crucial factor.

by KSE on Jan 1, 2012 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

Benson better have his bags packed,

His limo to the airport idling at the players exit just in case he has another multi fumble day. I heard a Raven interview yesterday and those guys are eager to lay some licks on Benson.
WCO can do well in this kind of wind so no worries.

The "WCO" is misnamed

Walsh developed this offense for Virgil Carter, then Ken Anderson and this weather. Wonder why it worked so well in San Francisco but has issues in Some locations (Buffalo or Chicago)

The remaining two 2012 opponents will be assigned according to the 2011 final standings. The Bengals will play at home against the AFC East team that finishes in the same position as Cincinnati, and the Bengals will play on the road against the AFC South team that matches their 2011 position.

Ravens question..

If we get off to a solid lead and are banging the crap out of Flaco, do you think they will pull him to avoid injury and “concede” defeat or do you think they leave him in to try to fight back. That is a tough call. If we didn’t let Houston and Arizona come back, I think they would just pull him, but the reality is that the Bengals suck with the lead (so far this year).

Emphatically no

Their best chance to beat us is for Rice to run the ball. Flacco will stay in because he is the starter for a reason. Plus the Ravens are playing for Home game after bye in playoffs instead of going to DEN/OAK next Saturday.

by david in upstate SC on Jan 1, 2012 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

I agree,

But what if Flaco is taking a Rothshitsburger style beating and his thumb (or anything else) gets hurt early in the game. I am not so sure they tough it out the way the Squeelers did with Ben.

by steveinct on Jan 1, 2012 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

Flacco isn't the key to that teams offense.

If he’s seriously hurt? then yes they will take him out but it’s a nagging injury and he play through? he will.

by KSE on Jan 1, 2012 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

True.. but..

Don’t they have a 6th round rookie as their backup QB? That is why I question if they will keep him in there if we are banging him around. If he gets hurt, they are not going anywhere in the playoffs.

Winning the SB won't affect that.

That list was based on a number of various things. It’ll increase, obviously (winning does that, Reds shot up on that list after the Division title) but factors like bad stadium, disliked owners and overall team value will still hurt the club.

Reminds me of that Tennessee game a couple years ago.

aka “The Cincinnati Hurricane”. The goal posts were swaying all over the place.

by KSE on Jan 1, 2012 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Eh, I don't know about that....

Those winds were snapping tree trunks and pulling thousand year old tree roots out of the ground. Winds were at 60mph during that ’08 game. I remember Carson trying to throw the ball and it would go straight into the ground. These winds are going to be about 20 mph. Not even close haha

yeah that was bad

power was out around here for like 2 weeks…..

I was just going with the reports of 40+ winds

but that isn’t expected to continue this afternoon.

If Dalton has a good game today,

I can’t tell you how impressed I’m going to be.

In the meantime, I’m watching Newton and Brees go at it. The offensive fireworks Carolina and New Orleans are going to be putting on display for the next few years is going to be worthwhile entertainment for anyone.

Baltimore Sun

So on that posting about Geno Atkins, we had a quote from the Baltimore Sun but honesty forgot to link to that specific article — which is rare for us, we always credit the sources.

Got an email from them today threatening to get their lawyers involved if we didn’t correct the mistake — which I did earlier.

Hence, now I’m not bothering to reference nor read the Baltimore Sun for anything related to Baltimore. I’m actually more of a fan of that team than I am the newspaper.

Question on the Jets

Are we watching the Jets/Dolphins first? A Jets loss helps us in case, god forbid, we lose.

Note about the Texans

They’re reportedly sitting a lot of their players, which will give the Titans an easier path to win. That’s alright for us if we lose, provided that either the Broncos or Raiders lose — as I understand it.

so, when the Jests lose

all we need is a loss by the Raiders and or the Donkeys? not that I’m not confident about us, but I’d like a little wiggle room

Or

One of ’ems gotta win the division.
