Bengals Vs. Ravens: Second-Half Open Thread

The Bengals need to come out of the locker room as a different team in the second half if they want to have a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. They've been known to get down early and battle back in the second half and hopefully they're able to do the same today.

Luckily, both the Broncos and the Raiders are losing at halftime in their games, and if either of them lose today, the Bengals are in the playoffs even if they lose today. I'd rather make the playoffs as a 10-6 team than a 9-7 team, though.

Here's your second-half open thread.

If the Bengals do win this game, it's a radical feat

They’re on a streak of 13 straight losses to playoff teams.
They’ve never in franchise history beaten a winning team in the last game of the year to capture a playoff spot (only wins were against doormats in 1970 and 1990)

by occams_tiger_teeth on Jan 1, 2012 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Note that backing into the playoffs *also*

is historically unprecedented in Bengals history.
Only have one wild card (1975) and no tie-breaker was involved. Have lost all other wild card tie-breakers.

Yeah, let's make some noise and get into the playoffs on a positive note here......

don’t get me wrong I’ll take a playoff birth any which way, but would like to see us a little more fired up than this.

I agree. I prefer a win going into the Playoffs but I'll take the Playoffs anyway we can get them

It would be HUGE experience for these young players. Also the first game against the Texans is definitely a winnable game for us. We also owe them for that last second loss.

everyone looks like rookies in this game

and the players had the nerve to beg fans for a sellout what a joke.

by bengalinflorida on Jan 1, 2012 5:54 PM EST reply actions

If the Bengals lose this

and again next weekend they’ll have lost fifteen straight games to playoff teams.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Jan 1, 2012 5:54 PM EST reply actions

We are young guys. This is the first time most of these players have played in a game like this

Very good experience. If we back in the Playoffs it will be good experience also. For this young team this kind of experience could be hugely beneficial over the next few years.

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 5:54 PM EST reply actions

I'll take a playoff spot however the Bengals can get it

And if the Bengals do get in, it’s not like they’ll be playing a hot team in the Texans…..nice bit of revenge could be had there.

You mean fans won't come to watch a winning team, Playoff team(if we back in), and young exciting team?

I disagree with that. This game has little to do with whether fans will come to see them next year or in the next few years.

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Discerning fans recognize that the Bengals

haven’t beaten anybody good and crapped the bed when they had a chance to earn a playoff spot today.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Jan 1, 2012 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

You know what?

If they come to play and they play and make this a game the way playoff teams should, then yes. But it seems to me that with all the talent we have something is definitely holding them back, and also in return will hold the fans back..

by palewook on Jan 1, 2012 5:55 PM EST reply actions

Thank you.

Regardless of what happens, we are an up and coming team so why all the negative comments?

I’ll take a playoff birth anyway possible, but most importantly this team has positioned itself to be good for years to come.

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Why?

I don’t see this as evidence of “up and coming”.
Bengals beat the league’s patsies, next year’s schedule will be more difficult.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Jan 1, 2012 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

So you would disagree that the Bengals are up and coming?

With a stud young WR? A solid young Defense? A good young QB to build around? Tons of early picks for the next few years? Winning 9 games in a year that we were picked to win 1-4 games?

I’d say we are definitely up and coming!

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think the defense will be that good next year

because I expect them to lose a lot of players to free agency.

Up and coming means you beat some good teams. When that happens I’ll change my mind – but if they end the year with 14 or 15 straight losses to playoff teams, I’m not buying what you’re selling.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Jan 1, 2012 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

No it won't.

Still a third place position.

Dude, you’re miserable today. cut it out. I don’t mean put on fake happiness, but good lord.

I can't believe people are blaming the refs

Bengals playing like crap. No pass rush, not really stopping the Ravens, not able to run the ball, not doing much in the passing game, and not playing with their heads in the game. Yeah, a couple bad calls went against them. But the main reason they’re getting stomped is their own play.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Jan 1, 2012 6:10 PM EST reply actions

yes, they are playing bad.

however, one of the bad calls led directly to the last score of the half, making this a two score game.

The one TD drive the refs gave the Ravens 35+ yards

They stopped a potential first down pass that would have gave us the ball at mid field.

by WHYUS!! on Jan 1, 2012 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

During the first forty years after its founding, Cincinnati experienced spectacular growth. By 1820, citizens, extremely proud of their city, were referring to it as The Queen City or The Queen of the West. On May 4, 1819, B. Cooke wrote in the Inquisitor and Cincinnati Advertiser, “The City is, indeed, justly styled the fair Queen of the West: distinquished for order, enterprise, public spirit, and liberality, she stands the wonder of an admiring world.” In 1854, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote his poem, Catawba Wine, to memorialize the city’s vineyards, especially those of Nicholas Longworth. The last stanza of the poem reads:

“And this Song of the Vine,
This greeting of mine,
The winds and the birds shall deliver,
To the Queen of the West,
In her garlands dressed,
On the banks of the Beautiful River.”

3 no call on PI

... I still say it was a touchdown, got tammit.

by supergrover on Jan 1, 2012 7:14 PM EST reply actions

apparently its legal to grab a bengal 30 yards down the field

by palewook on Jan 1, 2012 7:14 PM EST reply actions

don't do that.

that’s weak. Complain about missed calls, two blatant ones… but now you sound like Ray whineyass-knifer Lewis

... I still say it was a touchdown, got tammit.

whining about the refs being paid off.

I get complaining about shitty calls. I don’t believe the refs are paid to determine winners.

... I still say it was a touchdown, got tammit.

Ahh

I was following the thread on my phone and all the comments didn’t load so I couldn’t see what you were replying to.

Low Football IQ

I love this team and what they’ve accomplished but they are a dumb team.

Nah, he only ripped off the jersey

Oh well, still going to the playoffs. Bring on Houston for some revenge

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 7:16 PM EST reply actions

nice no call fucking ref!

He was all over Green! This shot needs to be addresses with the league.

by D-Day77 on Jan 1, 2012 7:16 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Exactly

I don’t care how we got in, we got in. We have a winning record and get to play one of the weaker teams in the first round.

The young players get a ton of experience in this game and the Houston Playoff game.

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

Playoffs!

Why would Lewis bring Benson back in after Scott TD ???
Ball on 50 and momentum was killed.
Scott is a playmaker Benson makes me vomit

Bummed at the lost but great season Bengals

I know we didn’t beat the “BIG” boys but I am a proud fan of this team. My prediction for this season was 5-11 and I am damn proud I was proven wrong.

by Toledoray7 on Jan 1, 2012 7:16 PM EST reply actions

Refs suck

this rediculous. I hope in the playoffs when the whole country is watching the Refs don’t get away with this S*hit

Oh well at least we are in the playoffs.

Palmer just threw a pick! Haha!

by D-Day77 on Jan 1, 2012 7:17 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

I'm fine with getting into the playoffs this way...

If we lost like, 35 to 10 I’d feel like crap, but losing by 8 points isn’t really that bad.

by WhoDey3626 on Jan 1, 2012 7:17 PM EST reply actions

Yay!

Lame to lose especially with that crappy reffing at the end. But Cincy is going to the playoffs!

WHOO!

by HawaiianBengal on Jan 1, 2012 7:18 PM EST reply actions

talk about a bittersweet day.

bengals got bent over by the refs all day, but they still get in the playoffs at least.

by dqniel on Jan 1, 2012 7:18 PM EST reply actions

PLAYOFFS!!!

Bring on the weak ass Texans! 1st playoff win is very promising!

by crossphaded on Jan 1, 2012 7:18 PM EST reply actions

I don't recall ever seeing, collectively

a worse performing group of playoff candidates than this year’s Oakland-Denver-Cincy-Jets group. They lost about 2/3 or more of their games down the stretch.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Jan 1, 2012 7:19 PM EST reply actions

Yes so many mediocre teams in AFC - which actually means Bengals have a chance

Don’t think they can beat Pitt or Balt or NE at their place but the playoff experience will be good for next year.

by brisd on Jan 1, 2012 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

uhhh, you're kidding right?

seahawks, ram, and 49ers just last year were all in a race down to the wire and they all had miserable seasons.

by dqniel on Jan 1, 2012 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

I'm ok with backing into the Playoffs

because we had realy terrible calls against the Ravens this year.

by diehard bengals fan 20 on Jan 1, 2012 7:19 PM EST via mobile reply actions

BTW, say what you want about the Bengals not beating the top teams but

We’ve hung with every team we played, except Pitt in one game.

Once this young team learns how to put teams away and gains some Playoff and Division experience we will only get better, IMO.

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 7:20 PM EST reply actions

We will get there.

We have a great young team. No we didn’t win but we made the playoffs with a rookie quarterback and wide receiver. Suck it Carson Poo Poo and Ochostinko. These kids did just as well as our former stars.

by D-Day77 on Jan 1, 2012 7:23 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

We've had a few tough calls go against us when we played the top teams.

Regardless we are young, in the Playoffs, and have hung with every team(one game against Pitt we didnt’).

Lot’s to look forward to as a Bengal Fan, IMO.

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

How can you blame the refs? How about not letting Balt score so many points

I predicted a 9-7 finish, didn’t think it would be enough but the rest of the AFC sucks just as bad. Congrats to Bengals for overachieving and reaching playoffs.

by brisd on Jan 1, 2012 7:21 PM EST reply actions

LOL, when did you predict a 9-7 season for Cincy, 2 min ago?

Nobody had Cincy winning 9 games, especially a Baltimore fan

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

I predicted it when they were 4-2.

I don’t watch the games because 1) I am not in viewing area 2) they always lose whenever I watch live

by brisd on Jan 1, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

honestly do you realy think the Refs called the game evenly?

Yes, the Bengals did not play well. I give them credit for almost overcoming it.

I’m not going to blame the refs, but there were a lot of blown calls. I know it’s typical to swallow the whistle on a Hail Mary, but we were on the 35 and it was an obvious PI.

by C1ncy4Life on Jan 1, 2012 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

Marvin should step up

For once – I’d like to see him just come out and say the officiating stinks. He can afford the huge fine. Somebody has to say it.

by JADefense on Jan 1, 2012 7:21 PM EST reply actions

he's on the competition commitee

you’d think he had some sway.

I also want this. It’s about time someone stands up and says something. I have always said you have to overcome those bad calls/no calls, but this last one in the end zone was absolutely pathetic. Someone in the organization needs to say something publicly, Just one time!

by WHYUS!! on Jan 1, 2012 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

When someone gets a video of that no call PI at the end

will you post it?

There was definitely PI there, he had a handful of jersey and was pulling him down

but to be fair, it looked like AJ was pushing off a bit as well.

A playoff win would sure be nice

Its there for the taking, but they can’t make so many mistakes.

All i know is I am drinking a Dogfish IPA 60 living in Pittsburgh and thinking we were rated 33 of 32 teams heading into the season. Playoff game and bonus game hell yeah
