Around SBN: Rondo On Slowing Heat: 'They've Got To Hit The Deck, Too'

Open Thread: Offseason Mode

After an action-packed season, it's hard to get into offseason mode. It's like trying to stop a runaway train (quick, somebody call Denzel!). Now that we are in offseason mode, what's on your mind? What do the Bengals need to do in the coming months to make themselves better?

Go.

Offseason

I’d love to see them shore up some spots in FA like WR, S, and RB vs the draft. The free agent class this year looks like it could be deep depending on team resignings. I’d also really like to see the bengals make a push to keep some of their FA from hitting the market such as Sims, Nelson, Lawson, and Jones.

2012 Off-Season Free Agent List

http://rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/39667/59/nfl-free-agent-master-list

Who are some of the guys you would like to see us make a run at? I would like to see the Bengals try to sign Martellus Bennett and try to run a two TE system kind of like the Pats are doing with Gronkowski and Henrnandez.

This list has a TON of talent.

personally I would rather have Bennett than coffman

Bennett is very similar to Gresham with his size and athletism.

So your saying coffman isnt 6'6"

and cant catch better than Gresham.. Cause all tape of college play proves the only thing coffman couldnt do is block because he never had too… I’d take coffman as a WR too. but this year i think we take 4 te

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

Very Possible

i just still havent figured out how having a 6’6" football catching machine

Is a bad thing?

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

It's not a bad thing....

But it’s obvious this guy can’t put it all together. I said from day one that as long as he’s on the team he might as well get an opportunity to play in some specific packages – but they won’t even let him do that.

There are some available Free Agents (like Bennett) that can both block and catch passes – making Coffman expendable. I hoped the best for Chase – but it’s time to cut our losses and move on.

I blame marvin for never giving the young guys a shot

like simpson who couldnt get off the bench because of VET FA’s then look what happened.

Like pat sims who Thorton had to sit himself when we were 1-11-1 to let this kid get playing time because the coach has no clue.

Let him play or at least let him get some 1st string reps with the Offense this preseason before cutting him loose.

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

First things first

If zimmer leaves replace him
Figure out what we are doing with marvin (dont want him on the last year of his deal)
More plans for practice bubble
Replace Lippencott + Hire 2 more scouts
Resign some of our Pending FA’s before FA starts. (Nelson / A Jones / Simpson)
Hit Free Agency with a plan to fill holes on the OL and maybe WR
Draft Well take the sure thing when the picks come.

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 12:53 PM EST reply actions

++++++

FIRE PAUL Alexander

Hire A Munoz as new OL Coach.
Get a TE coach that can actually Develope a TE.
and maybe look for a RB Coach… I know hes been here forever but our guys never seem to get better than they were when we got them.

One thing is for Sure the OL has problems that must be fixed

Coffman

Coffman is pretty much already gone. He was on the practice squad at the end of the season and was not signed to the offseason roster basically cutting him from this team. I think they are going forward with cochart instead

by Engelj06 on Jan 13, 2012 1:25 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Thats not true yet....

they could have offered him a contract most teams sign all of their PS players for the offseason.

But now there is no deadline for the players to sign so its possible Coffman has either chosen not to sign or is busy with family and will sign when he can.

We wont know until they say something

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

He is probly pissed he isnt getting to play

when he sees guys like jimmy graham and gronk and hernandez becoming unstoppable.

If i was coffman i would try my luck with a team that knows how to use a TE. and that is not here. unfortantely.

(the thing was we went after utech who would have been a strickly pass catching TE so why do we not want another? why cant we figure out how to use TE’s? why cant our TE coach develope a TE so they get better each year?) and why havent we replaced said coach

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

no proof yet to support such a theory

it is possible he never recovered from his foot injurey but your talking about they guy that beat gresham for the mackey award

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

I see what you're saying - but you simply cannot use college credentials and stats to justify playing a guy in the NFL.

Remember Chris Perry? That guy was a stud in college – didn’t do jack in the NFL. I’m not saying Coffman *hasn’t deserved a shot – but his college stats and awards mean absolutely NOTHING in the NFL.

Leinhart won the Heisman.
Jason White won the Heisman.
Eric Crouch won the Heisman.
Etc, Etc….

by DiddyGotGrillz on Jan 13, 2012 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

Chris perry was great for us in 2005

then the bengals doctors happened and he was out and mistreated medically till 2008 when we made him the full time back when he should have been the 3rd down back like 2005

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

nothing to support he should be on the roster either

I’m going to assume if no team in the NFL wants him, he sucks.

It;s hard for people to grasp that possibility. We all said B. Scott should get more playing time, he did and well he isn’t very impressive either.
I tend to think the coaches know more than we do.

"Next season will be better" circa 1990

He's had the chance

Because he’s been cut and noone picked him up!!!

by biggie22 on Jan 13, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

You said

If i was coffman i would try my luck with a team that knows how to use a TE. and that is not here. unfortantely.

I’m telling you we cut him so he had his chance to go to another team. Other teams had the opportunity to pick him up and no one wanted him!!!

by biggie22 on Jan 13, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

cant agrue that now one grabbed him

but we havent really showcased him either..

the only film on this kid was hard knocks when he was forced into practicing on his broken foot due to both our TE’s getting put on IR

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

I get frusterated as well

With our coaches apparent aprehesion to play young players. Two years ago, I thought he should have been given more of shot. I wonder the same thing about Brandon Ghee, Robert Sands, Taylor Mays and the list does on. At same point you have to give these a shot to see if they can produce. And you are right it was the same way with Jerome Simspon

by biggie22 on Jan 13, 2012 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

And on the flip side

if i was the bengals i would figure out how to use a TE like NE and NO.

Jay Gruden promised to use our players to their strenghts. so far i think hes scoring a D

by Bengalsfan024 on Jan 13, 2012 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

I have a thought to think

Bounce Gresham into a nasty position and cochart tight to create a new look for a running attack. Use AJ on Cochart’s side and Baby Hawk or Simpson or Shipley stacked behind Gresham (provided he does not false start again) in a similar look to what NE runs with Gronk and Welker.

May open some runniong lanes for (RB to be named later)
