Taylor Mays will actually be a key player in Playoffs

He is the one guy they have found who can cover a decent TE. He actually did a good job against Owen Daniel for HOU in the first game. They will need him to fully recover from the hamstring so he can play in HOU ... and possibly so he can attempt to cover Gronkowski in NWE.

Bengals have struggled covering good TE's for years, but it appears their best shot may be Mays!

Let's hope he is healthy for this Saturday!

Uh, really?

He’s your key to the game?!? The dude only has 67 snaps all season with a 3rd of those coming from the Texans game…where Daniels had 100 yards receiving. I think team defense and gap responsibility might be a bit more important than a healthy backup safety.

by bengaljohnboy on Jan 2, 2012 1:53 PM EST reply actions

yep, really

Daniels yards came when Crocker and Nelson were covering, Mays held his own…why he played most of his snaps against the Texans

by joeb69 on Jan 2, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

Once Mays went in, he shut down Daniels.

He is limited in his football ability but one thing he may be able to do is to cover TE’s. He is big enough, he is faster than most TE’s. If he can only do that one thing, it is still valuable enough.

me thinks you are taking a very small sample size and extracting bad conclusions

Mays did a decent job against Owens, but so did other guys on other plays. Here are Daniels catches/targets against us:

1st-and-15: 5yd catch tackled by Thomas Howard
1st-and-10: 27yd catch tackled by Reggie Nelson
2nd-and-13: incomplete (covered by Kelly Jennings)
3rd-and-5: 24yd catch tackled by Nate Clements and Reggie Nelson
3rd-and-5: 18yd catch tackled by Thomas Howard
2nd-and-12: incomplete (covered by Brandon Johnson)
1st-and-10: incomplete (no defender name given)
2nd-and-10: 11yd catch tackled by Thomas Howard
1st-and-10: 7yd catch tackled by Adam Jones
3rd-and-3: 8yd catch tackled by Thomas Howard
2nd-and-10: incomplete (covered by Taylor Mays)

So by your logic, Kelly Jennings will be the key to the game too. Anyway, my point is more that there are so many more vital keys to this upcoming game than Taylor Mays…

can i get the plays that shows Owens covered but not passed to?

Kinda like, Revis has good numbers most games because no one attempts to pass to his side because the coverage is so good.

You didn't account for how many times Owens wasn't thrown to because Mays had him blanketed.

And honestly I noticed he had really good coverage almost every time he was in there on Owens. I think that’s evidenced by the fact that he was only thrown to once while covered by Mays, and that was an incomplete. He really do did a great job taking him out of the equation.

mays has no hip movement

He is fast enough but to stiff. That’s why we were able to get him for a 7th.

by JCompton41 on Jan 2, 2012 2:04 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Maybe

if he was playing last night, he could have ran down Rice before he got into the endzone, b/c nobody else could catch him…

by WHYUS!! on Jan 2, 2012 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

i think we need to play him more

Just because crocker can’t really do much anyways. But trying to rely on Mays to cover probowl tight ends is crazy.

by JCompton41 on Jan 2, 2012 3:08 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I agree

I just want to see if Zimm can coach him up some more..

by WHYUS!! on Jan 2, 2012 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

i dont know how much coaching you can do for him

He just is not a fluid mover, zimmer can use him like he did Roy Williams in his prime and he could be very effective though.

by JCompton41 on Jan 2, 2012 3:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Oviously something is there though

Zimm really wanted him last year and saw something he liked.

by WHYUS!! on Jan 2, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

he did not do a good job covering Daniels

and he can’t change direction. He’s only useful when you need someone to run in a straight line and hit a non-moving target. That’s rarely useful in the NFL.

We got killed by their TE's in the first game.....

no one covered them. Stopping the run and covering their TE’s are huge concerns.

But Owens didn't have a single reception

(if I am not mistaken) when he was being covered by Mays. Mays really did a great job covering him when he was in I don’t know if you watched.

by Luke on Jan 2, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Mays hasn't played enough for me to really have an opinion on him...

I trust that Zimmer will find a way to make Mays effective, but the guy just hasn’t been able to stay healthy. And with a hamstring injury I doubt we see him in the playoffs.

Mentioned it in another post, but...

When Ghee was drafted, there was some talk about converting him to safety because he loves to hit and also has good coverage skills. For some reason we never did it. This would have been a good time for someone like that.

by steveinct on Jan 2, 2012 4:09 PM EST reply actions

hell

forgot about him, but, not sure if you don’t trust him in the regular season, you turn to him come playoff time

by joeb69 on Jan 2, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree.

I was just mentioning it because it seems like we don’t develop our players correctly. It isn’t like we were so deep at safety that we couldn’t get this guy some reps at some point.

by steveinct on Jan 2, 2012 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

We still have to wait on Ghee.

He had a horrible injury that kept him out of football most of his rookie season, and then he had no offseason to get back into the groove. A healthy offseason will reveal how much Ghee has to offer.

This is purley specualtive

But I think Ghee’s issues may be mental. I kind of remember Zimmer being pissed at him in one of the preseason games for not being in the right position (like more pissed than he ussually seems to get with other players who are out of position, which leads me to beleive this is a common occurance in practice). He seems to have all the physical tools but maybe just like Simpson he struggles with the mental part of the game. Again pure specualtion

Doesn't look too good for Mays this week......from the Mothership......

Safety Taylor Mays (hamstring) looks like he’ll miss his second straight game because he hasn’t practiced this week. Outside linebacker Dontay Moch, who has been battling headaches the past few months, also was out all week. Defensive lineman Jon Fanene missed practice because of a non-injury reason.
