Open Thread: (Un)Super bowl?
To be honest, a rematch between the Giants and the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI is about the last matchup that I want to see. Granted, both teams are good and both teams deserve to be there since they won on Sunday, but I just can't get excited about watching a male model out pass a mouth-breathing dummy (no offense, Eli). Honestly, for the first time I'm more excited about watching the Pro Bowl than the Super Bowl.
What do you think? Are you with me or do you think I'm crazy?
Don't be afraid to share, this is a safe place.

Not at all...
The Pro Bowl is a joke. Going to be cool to see our Bengals out there representing us, but as far as the actual game goes? Hell no. I don’t care what teams are in it, I’d still rather watch the Super Bowl.

I thought both games yesterday were good games.
You can talk about Brady and Eli all you want but both had the talent and ability to have SB rings and a chance for another. Male model? Mouth breather? I am not sure that doesn’t sound like a bunch of sour grapes to me. I think this will be a good SB to watch and I am looking forward to watching it. So, while I don’t think you are crazy I am not with you on this.

Even if you strongly dislike these teams (or their QBs) for whatever reason, if you are a fan of football (and football history for that matter), this game has it all. I will take this matchup before another 16-6 “Harbaugh Bowl” any day of the week.
Like it or not, Tom Brady is unquestionably one of the all-time greatest QBs to have ever played the game. His career numbers (both regular season and postseason), NFL records, league MVPs (he was the only UNANIMOUS league MVP in the history of the NFL btw), Superbowl appearances, SuperBowl wins, and Superbowl MVPs, speak, rather loudly, for themselves. Depending on the outcome of SB XLVI, Brady could go down as the best QB of all-time. I like watching sports history happen right before my eyes, especially if I have no reason to root against the player.
Similarly, Eli is quickly becoming of the the game’s greats, and has earned his 2nd superbowl appearance (already equaling his much more “acclaimed” brother).

I agree completely.
I don’t go for tabloid fodder. Tom Brady is good looking? Good for him. Doesn’t make me hate him. He’s a stellar QB and anyone who says otherwise is just whining. That said, I’m looking forward to the Giants being their usual Giant-killer selves and taking out the Patriots yet again in another good, close game.
Definitely don't want to watch the Pats D again though
They haven’t been as bad in the playoffs but they’re still bad. Real bad.

Would you rather have seen the Ravens or even the 49ers OFFENSES in the SuperBowl??
Please, the 49ers offense set offensive football back 30 years with their truly “offensive” (as in putrid) performance yesterday.
1 for 13 on 3rd down opportunities; one catch by a wide receiver; a QB (selected #1 overall in his draft class btw) who completed a truly comical 46% of his passes (12 for 26) AT HOME AGAINST ONE OF THE WORST defensive secondaries in football.
And the kicker, for me at least, is that Alex Smith twice (TWICE!!) had the opportunity to drive his team down the field, AT HOME (i.e. no deafening crowd noise) for the game winning FG (that’s all they needed btw – a mere FG) with under 5 minutes to play in the 4th quarter with the game tied 17-17. Instead, both drives were “3 and outs”, not to mention the other TWO possessions in OT where the 49ers offense looked like a high school offense. Vernon Davis, while a truly unbelievable player, does NOT constitute an entire offense.
Kevin Williams is being made the scapegoat in SF, when it is rather evident to anyone who has watched more than 3 football games in their life, that Alex Smith had a truly putrid performance. Again, the tell-tale sign for me was the fact that the 49ers TWICE had the ball with under 5 minutes left in the game, and with the score tied 17-17, and Alex Smith failed to lead his team to even a game-winning FG ATTENPT. Go win the game, Alex. Instead, what does he do?? He “leads” the 49ers offense to two “3 and outs”.

Whoa whoa whoa...
Did I just push a button there? Sounds like we’ve got a closet Pats fan here. Either that, or somebody used your coffee cup as a dip spitter this morning. Haha Wow…
by whodeycommish14 on Jan 23, 2012 2:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Hahaha - nope!
Bengals fan til the day I die, and will NEVER root for anther team.
I just don’t understand how people cannot be intrigued by this SB matchup.
Of the 4 teams left, you honestly wanted to see the RAVENS beat the Pats? By openly not wanting to watch the Pats’ Defense, as you stated, you were, by default, wishing the Ravens would have won. So you would have preferred the Ravens, and you’re a Bengals fan? I think we have a "not-very-strong Bengals’ fan. I kid, of course
Also, I’m not quite sure how you deduce that I am a Patriots fan (which, again, I am not. Bengals for life) from by comment above. I never mentioned the Patriots in my reply to you. I did, however, mention how bad of a QB Alex Smith is, and how utterly putrid the 49ers offense was yesterday.

Exactly...
Say all of this without any credit towards the Giants D. Did I say anything about not wanting to see this match up? I coach at the high school level, played college football, and am at every single Bengals home game at PBS. I breathe football my man. The Super Bowl to me is like a national holiday. I could care less who is playing in it. My “Pats fan” comment was me having fun with you because you went on a rant after completely butchering my thoughts on the previous post. I know you’re a Bengals fan. It was a joke… Haha hehe

We're all die-hards here, no doubt.
Here’s hoping to a Bengals SB next season (and many more beyond), so we don’t have to “bitch” about which SB matchup we prefer. Who Dey!!!

Actually
So since I said NE’s defense is bad, I’m a Ravens fan now and I want them to be in the Super Bowl? And by default? Great logic
I could’ve gave two rats asses who went on to play in the Super Bowl. Unless its the Cincinnati Bengals, I have no favorite.
by whodeycommish14 on Jan 23, 2012 3:03 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
What's funny to me is that you place all the blame on
Alex Smith in the last five mins and that’s it. The 9’ers defense played phenomenal yesterday. Only to have the Giants punt to Williams and have him implode. One punt hits off his knee and doesn’t make an effort to try and jump on it. Guess he didn’t feel it, right? Another punt, he half asses a fair catch and puts his offense inside the fifteen. I guess he didn’t know how to call a fair catch, right? Then he muffs one later on.
Listen, that’s fine if you’re going to blame Alex Smith and the offense, but you can’t ignore the three plays he botched. So you might say, “Well that’s only three plays.” Ok well that’s why ST’s are so damn important.
by whodeycommish14 on Jan 23, 2012 2:49 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I'm actually blamign Alex Smith performance over the entire game (i.e. 12 for 26 and only 1 for 13 on tird down)
The final 5 minutes (with the game tied and on the line for the taking – a trip to the SuperBowl on the line) just highlighted his entire poor performance.
You are correct – Kevin Williams certainly factored into the loss. I even acknowledged that. However, Kevin Williams, is being made a scapegoat because that’s what all the highlight shows by the four letter network will focus on from now until kingdom come. Kevin Williams would NOT have even been in a position to field that punt in OT if Alex Smith could have sustained ONE measly drive in the final 5 minutes of the game when all they needed was a FG. Placing ALL the blame on Kevin Williams, who clearly had a major part in the loss, is nothing more than pure scapegoating. Alex Smith was 12-26 (with 1 for 13 on third down) against a Giants secondary that ranked near the bottom of pass defense in the NFL.
Williams certainly contributed, but Alex Smith had opportunity after opportunity to WIN the game at HOME, and he simply, and unequivocally failed. This is a QB-driven league, and you expect your QB to put you in positions to win. He failed throughout the game on third down and, moreover, Kevin Williams’ is not even fielding that punt in OT if Alex Smith simply drives his team down the field for a game winning FG (not TD, but FG). He had FOUR opportunities to drive his team down the field with the game tied, and hefell flat on his face. Williams is the scapegoat.

OK OK OK!!!
That’s fine. You still say all of this without giving credit where it is due. It takes two to tango and it takes three phases of the game to get you to the Super Bowl . The Giants D played well yesterday.

I like this super bowl match up
Pats get in and we get 3 more pro bowlers.
Plus they beat the ratbirds.
Giants beat the packers so we don’t have to hear the media lovefest.
They beat the 9ers so we don’t have to hear another media lovefest.
Now a rematch of the best super bowl in my lifetime.

I can't agree with you Jason
The last Super Bowl between these two teams was one of the best football games I’ve ever seen. I live in New York and am a default Giants fan since I hate the Jets, but I’ve never been a big fan of Eli. That being said, he’s playing at a VERY high level this year and has explosive playmakers around him with Cruz and Nicks. The Patriots are the Patriots. Both defenses are really stepping it up – especially the Pats defensive line, who after watching these last two weeks I can’t believe wasn’t one of the best in the league all season.
This is going to be a VERY good Super Bowl. I can’t get worked up over the Giants like I do about the Bengals, but regardless I’d be rooting against New England.
The 2 best teams are there, Period! It'll be a great game.

It looks like Eli wans
to give Brady a big old kiss. I can see the lust in his eyes.
AJ Green = Optimus Prime
As a fan of football, I am really looking forward to this SB
In a league that has obviously become QB-centric, I love this matchup featuring two of the top 5 QBs currently playing in the NFL, not to mention the “historical” aspects that are on the line:
1.) If Pats win, Brady will have equaled Bradshaw and Montana with 4 superbowl rings – the most all-time (although Montana and Bradshaw were both perfect – i.e. 4-0 – in the SB, whereas Brady is 3-1: the loss being to the NYG led by the same Eli Manning). Brady has already surpassed both Bradshaw and Montana, though in # of SB appearances with 5 (ties John Elway).
2.) If the Giants win, Eli Manning will have more SB rings than his brother, and a serious discussion can be made that Eli is a better clutch QB (if not overall QB – you can make a strong case), than Peyton (especially considering that Peyton has a not-so-impressive 9-10 postseason record).
3.) One of these Franchises will win their 4th SuperBowl title. I kind of see this as a way to somewhat silence those obnoxious SteAlers’ fans we all know who’s favorite retort is always, “Well, WE have 6 Superbowls”. I mean this in the sense that the SteAlers’ are not the only example of a dominant NFL Franchise (much to the amazement of those obnoxious SteAlers’ fans).
4.) Also, I can NEVER bring myself to cheer for the Ravens (unless a Bengals’ playoff berth were on the line), so I certainly did NOT want to see the Ravens advance to the SB. I also did not want to see that truly God-awful 49ers offense in the superbowl either (for the reasons posted in my previous comment above).
Bottom line, really looking forward to this SB.

me too
Sure I’d rather have the Bengals in there, but this is a very good matchup. I don’t feel like either of these teams lucked their way into the game, unlike some other teams in history. cough 85 Pats cough. It looks like a good matchup and is a rematch, which is kinda fun in itself. The Giants are fun to watch when all their pass rushers are healthy. It may be unAmerican, or maybe UnBritish, not sure how far back it goes, but I don’t automatically hate someone because they’re successful. I’m not ‘sick’ of the Patriots going to the Super Bowl. I don’t like the Patriots, but they earned their berth.
Don't agree with you
“Male model” and “Mouth breathing dummy” were the only arguments you could come up with for not watching the game? = ). I guess you don’t care for the game because you dislike both teams rather equally (unlike eric nyc or me, who will be rooting against the Pats)..so I guess its the action packed excitement of the ProBowl.
I love the Super Bowl
but the AFC needs some new blood…. last nine years, Pats (4 times) Steelers (3 times), Colts (2 times)…. I don’t mind the Colts so much, but get tired of the Pats and Steelers seemingly always representing the AFC… hey they have been the best teams so respect there… but for me ready to see somebody else…
Watching Stanford Jennings kick return in the Super Bowl was the out of body experience of my sports life.
Well all we have to do is beat them and we don't have to worry about that.
The problem is they are better than us right now and they have been for a while. Success is self defining in the NFL. It isn’t subjective like in the BCS. But, that being said, I would like to see a bit more progression thru the league.

I'm going hunting in S. Texas that weekend
I will gladly miss the unSuperBowl.
"Pawtucket Patriot Beer. If you drink it, hot women will have sex in your backyard."
Well....
I would rather see Brady win another super bowl then see any New York team win another Super Bowl. Brady for President!!
lol i don't care how many each team has won
I just want to the bengals to win one in my lifetime lol
AMAS
Here! Here! As for me it is getting close. I am an old and don't have another 20 years to wait for it.
"If we always agree, one of us is not necessary"
I will watch the game and hopefully it's close (my old friend the Sunday ticket can't save me this time)......
but it’s not the same as rooting for the Bengals. I do like watching two teams that are good enough to be there and compare them to the things we need to do in order to get to the SB next year. I can appreciate good teams who both earned the right to be here. But I do agree on not really being a fan of either Brady or Eli, but I have to give them credit…..they both largely carried their teams all the way to the end this year. Listen up Dalton!

Looking more forward to the food than the game.
While I think it will be a good game, usually in the Super Bowl, I have one team I would like to see win, and this year I would like to see neither win. My brother in law is from Boston, therefore a HUGE Pats fan, and he is very arrogant about it, yet good friends of ours are huge Giants fans, and also very arrogant. So, to be quite honest, I would like to see this game end in a tie. lol
I'm f'in pissed the crows lost!
If they won,.. We wouldnt have to f’in face ray lewis and ed reed twice a year anymore,.. DAMNIT LEE EVANS
agreed
and I really don’t like the old, broken mentality of hoping the opponents get worse. Screw that. We need to get better. I don’t want the Bengals to be like the teams in the AFC West, crap all around and the team that makes the playoffs is 8-8 or 9-7. I want tthe Bengals to be the team that wins the AFC North despite the division having 2 other playoff teams.
Pro Bowl
What a joke this game is. Everyone wants the honor but nobody wants to play. Let’s send them to the Probowl for the honor but let’s replace the probowl game with a college all-star game. They could cut away and do interviews with NFL players and such while the fans see future draft picks.
by Backyard Bengal on Jan 24, 2012 6:03 AM EST reply actions
I probably won't even watch it. There will be no real competition.
The only meaningful thing that can happen is for Green or Dalton or anyone else for that matter getting injured.
