Run Down on RB's

Trent Richardson: Probably won't happen so I'm not gonna say anything.

Lamar Miller: Nice fit for bengals, inside/out 3 down back. Would take him if other options like Decastro are off the board. he is raw with great upside.

Chris Polk: NOT SOLD This kid is beat the hell up. All around package and does have nice vision.

David Wilson: STAY AWAY This guy will be Benson 2.0. He fumbles way too much for me. I don't like taller backs b/c their more prone to injury. Sure Wilson has skills, great skills but I don't think he will be the one for the Bengals.

Doug Martin: THE MAN. I'm all about this kid. Has the body like MJD and Ray Rice. Very big, short, strong legs. I thought I was the only fan who liked this kid but I'm starting to see Martin and Pead show up on a lot more forums. Martin can do it all. I like Martin b/c even though he's not flashy he'll do exactly what Bengals need him to do; catch, block, run. He even punt returns.

Isaiah Pead: I would love to see him with Martin. Pead would be a great "change of pace back" who can catch and return. Fast, shifty, and runs aggressive. He did have a few more drops than I would like in college but I think his fumbles can be worked on unlike Wilson's fumblitis.

The rest of the backs just don't cut it for me. But I would like to mention one other who isn't getting a lot of talk; CHRIS RAINEY.

Chris Rainey: he is F'n FAST. I think he could be a utility guy for Special Teams and RB/WR. Matter of fact if Rainey is used right he will be a decision maker in many games for some team. Dude is that FAST and I think he's a footballer with good IQ.

So to sum up draft IMHO: 1a. DeCastro b. (BA) or Barron 2. Coby Fleener TE 3. Doug Martin 4. Pead 5. David Molk 5. Mike Martin

But realize it's almost impossible to figure a Mock Draft at this point; it's way too early. There are too many scenarios and mostly matters on the teams deciding before the Bengals.

Draft

I want to make my draft posting clearer. There are many possibilities for this upcoming draft. For instance. Just b/c there is a glaring need at a certain position doesn’t demand Bengals draft the “BA” at that time, example being Guard, I would take Zeitler over Osemele. So it would behoove the Bengals to look elsewhere. IMHO the best way to approach the draft is with the combination of Needs/BA. Plus if you know for sure player “x” is your guy, grab him but not at an insane cost i.e. Dalton. The Bengals want character, humble, winners, work horse, team 1st, and desire to be coached. But must show skill. Some teams draft on skill alone or team “needs”. Which is what I think the Bengals used to do in past drafts. Let’s hope the Bengals keep up good drafting decisions like the last few.

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 11:15 AM EST reply actions

+1 agree with Zeitler

Well coached and hugely improved through the year. 2nd round I think that’s where the CB will be

by messjunk on Jan 24, 2012 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

I also agree with Zeitler over Osemele

I think Zeitler could be a sleeper in this draft.

TE

I say TE if we get RB and CB in 1st. Because the Bengals spot in the 2nd puts them at a precarious position. If Coby Fleener is available the Bengals should grab him only b/c he’ll be the highest value, just not greatest need. The later 2nd is a crap shoot for example, if you need a Guard,CB,S and all that’s left are 3rd/4th rounders you grab someone who could make a difference like Coby Fleener. I don’t think he’ll be available but i like TE better than WR. Of course I’m also thinking DE/DT at 2nd. Just depends. I’ve mocked up to 25 different scenarios and TE seemed to fall at 2nd along with DE/DT. ONLY b/c Bengals grab RB in 1st.

Great post but

I keep hearing more and more about Barron and I don’t get why people are so in love with him. He is too one dimensional to warrant a first round pick. Yes he is very good in the box safety but his skill set against the pass has a lot to be desired. He was a product of the system and if he played for a lesser known team nobody would know who he is. It’s just my opinion from watching a lot of videos on him. I was actually high on the guy until I started watching tape on him. If you said 2nd round for him then I would like it more but his stock is high because this may be the weakest draft ever for safeties. I wouldn’t say I hate him, just don’t like him as a first rounder.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 11:58 AM EST reply actions

From what i get, Barron is just a Talyor Mays lite

He doesn’t have the athleticism or “pow” hits that Mays has, but is similar in that he’s more of a hitter than a coverage guy, and wraps up better.

With SS guys like Mays and Sands already in the wings, I’m not sure why we would draft Barron, unless we are saying we’ve given up on Mays & Sands.

And we’d still need a FS if Nelson bolts for Free Agency.

The Kid from Notre Dame looks solid.

I like the Safety’s we have at the moment til next year When Rambo comes out but if they have to go Safety which I think they will for Depth it will likely be Harrison Smith or Trumaine Thomas from ARkansas!

Harrison Smith is gaining notice

and have heard that some teams have him in the 1st/2nd round range

No higher than 3rd for us IMO

Ive been mentioning Smith alot

A lot of people thought i was crazy because they didnt know who he was. I said he would start moving up the draft boards and he has been great at Senior Bowl. He will be better than Barron.

by EPK1979 on Jan 25, 2012 10:59 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

yes Lester and Ray Ray Armstrong along with McDonald all will be first round picks. All 3 are complete safeties.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:16 PM EST reply actions

Barron

Yes, safeties are weak in 2012 draft. I think Barron is growing on me only b/c I like having a guy back there laying some serious hits. Like old school Fulcher. Barron’s pass instincts are not too bad and good enough for Bengals. Think Nelson, Mays, Barron in back, not bad. But MOST IMPORTANTLY is who’s drafted before the Bengals. I’ve seen Draft’s that have players like Q. Cuples left around 21 pick. That would be a great pick up even considering our depth at DE. I think watching the Giants will prove the importance of badass front D

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:16 PM EST reply actions

Yes Rambo

messjunk: I wanted Rambo SO Bad this yr. I thought he was gonna fall under the radar. This kid Rambo will be awesome. I would for sure pass on Barron this yr if I knew I could grab Rambo depending injuries and what have you. If you haven’t seen Rambo, go right now and watch this kid “LAY SERIOUS WOOD” at georgia.

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:20 PM EST reply actions

Rambo is a stud

Plus just adding the name “Rambo” to our roster would have to help our karma

by laibach on Jan 24, 2012 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

YES SIR!!!

How did I forget about him!!! That would be four safeties that will be going in the first round next year. Rambo,Armstrong, McDonald and Lester. Not bad for being weaker than this years class. lol

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

martin

I would take martin in the 2nd in a heart beat. He’s exactly the type of player i was describing earlier. a player I want for sure and willing to slightly reach.

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

Trumaine Johnson

Yep Trumaine is a good pick, possible sleeper. I also like Antonio Allen(sp) instead of Barron if it makes sense.

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

Too add about Trumaine

Trumaine does have one major problem in character issue though. There is a lot of talk about Winston Jr. I just don’t he’ll fall low enough for me personally. But if he did fall i’d grab him

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

agree

if he has a good combine, which I’m sure he will, then his stock will climb and he is already considered by most a 2nd to early 3rd round pick. He has all the skills we look for in a RB and he is the kind of player most of us want on the team (i.e.: good attitude, winner, coachable)

by ItsAlwaysSunnyInDayton on Jan 24, 2012 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not against drafting him

but I think you could find the same kind of player later in the draft. That’s all I’m saying. I will try to find the link but I read a roundtable on the safeties this year and most of them said they see Barron more as a 2 down safety and a great player on special teams. They thought that because he gets easily burned on play action, he is too stiff in his hips to turn and run on deep balls.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:22 PM EST reply actions

Agree

I take Barron if Claiborne, Kirk, Jenkins, gone. Not a fan of Dennard, NOT A FAN AT ALL of Dennard. so I only take Barron, maybe. And I completely agree with ya and see your point.

Hell I like Drafting OLB or DE if the right one falls at 21. Our Defense lacks ONE major thing: PLAY MAKING ABILITY. And obviously I the back field lacks talent. But I’d be dammed if I’m gonna take a player for the sake of “NEEDS” just because he’s prospected to do good. I want the player to fit my idea of my football team. Not just b/c he should good skills

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

I like Pead & Martin

But I think we need to get a Guard, Corner, and Safety first. Unless Mays or Boling and Hudson are ready to start. I think the best way to do that, assuming DeCastro and RIchardson are gone is drafting Dennard or Barron at 17, and Barron or Gilmore at 21, then grabbing a guard in the second. Then re-signing Fanene, Rucker, and Sims, and keeping Geathers. We still need another Guard in free agency or the draft, and probably a TE and WR, but those can come later.

I think Boiling is way better than he showed last year.

He was a rookie with no OTA’s or minicamps. It’s hard enough for a rookie lineman as it is. I would be actually shocked if he wasn’t the starter at left guard this year and didn’t perform well.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I think that he was drafted to immediately replace Livings, but once WIlliams got suspended they had to try to teach him 2 positions in a short time. My only question is why didn’t he replace Livings late in the season, unless it was for continuity sake.

My comment was intended as

If Hudson and Boling are ready to start, we don’t need to draft a guard in the 1st 2 rounds.

Boling

you are so true. that’s why having either Decastro or better yet Nicks would be AWESOME. I’d also keep Bobbie as vet. Guards 2012 heaven

Decastro or Nicks L Boling R

back ups: bobbie, and hudson. nice rotation with Tackles Whit, smith, collins

well said!!!!

That would be my dream scenario

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

but

I do think Boiling’s natural position is left guard and Decastro and Nicks are right guards. I don’t know, I could be wrong.

Still think Smith would be a PRO BOWL RG if the moved him and sign Collins at RT.

If Andre wasn’t getting paid LT money, this move would’ve happened long ago. We do this and one side of our line is good to go…….

I don't care for the position

We have good players, I wouldn’t say great players.besides a few. If you can upgrade a position with what might be a impact player. I’m all for it. Especially if a guy like Brockers slips to us.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:33 PM EST reply actions

Brockers

amen! there again depends if certain guys are gone.

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:37 PM EST reply actions

yes I agree

It all depends who falls to us. I would take Brockers at a position that we don’t need over Barron at a position we do need. First round picks need to be different makers. You can draft players later in the draft based on needs if you want.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

Well said

That’s my whole point I’m trying to make with some friends. Brockers over Barron is a perfect example. you go for BA/Needs. Bengals don’t “need” DT but they are slim and nothing special up front. Brockers would change that and make more of an impact on D than Barron. JMO

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Brockers

would you take Brockers over ANY CB? just curious kinda vague

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 12:47 PM EST reply actions

I would take Brockers over

Barron, Dennard, Gilmore maybe Kirkpatrick but probably not. I think Brockers is the best DT in the draft.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

Yes but I find it hard to imagine that Brockers will still be there also. I will also say them resigning Pat Sims would make it not look like a good move.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

I think they need to solidify both Offense and Defensive lines

If you have a dominant defensive line, it will make the linebackers, corners and safeties look better. Hell the Giants are proving that. Their secondary sucks. Get a dominant offensive line and it makes qb’s, rb’s and wr’s look better. Superbowls are won in the trenches.

by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 12:48 PM EST reply actions

Big Fan of the Trenches

Both lines are crucial. Example will be shown in this years Super Bowl. Pat’s o-line is gonna have to stop Giants D-line in order to win game. period. Even if the Bengals sign Simms (who I like) they still need a “play maker” up front. Bad. Bengals D-line is solid just not special. Pressure on the QB is and will be crucial for the Bengals Defense to succeed next yr.

sorry for the mess

if you can’t decipher above my free agents are as follow: G nicks, CB finnegan, the important Bengals and possibly OLB mario williams. Mario is a stretch for 2 reasons, 1- texans will probably re-sign him and 2- he had a really bad injury that’s hard to recover from.

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

Martin

If Martin looks like a 1st rounder than I’d have no problem drafting him at 21st. I really think this kid fits the Bengals just as good as Richardson. Miller may have the speed but I think Martin fit’s better. The Bengals need a back who can do everything: hit dudes hard, block well, receive with trustee hands, most importantly not get injured. I’m not naive to think he wouldn’t get injured, I just think his body shape/mold is better fit to do all of the above.
I also don’t see Martin worried wether he’s “getting touches” which would kill Gruden’s offense. The Bengals need play makers who don’t complain b/c they would rather win and see the overall picture.

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 3:15 PM EST reply actions

I was watching highlights from both guys today

and actually was more impressed with Martin. Granted… its highlights, but Martin looked faster, stronger, and more agile than anyone on the field. He flat out blew guys out of the water. Plus senior bowl notes all have Martin blowing up the competition. I think this guy might just sneak into the first round, maybe with the Bengals. Miller looked fast, but maybe less decisive and powerful than Martin. Excited to see where this goes!

Martin could be this drafts Matt Forte

remember forte didnt get drafted till the second round . i think martin will be a steal in the third or even fourth round. Honestly i think they’ll pick up either Micheal Bush, or another solid running in free agency, so i dont think RB will be a first round need, but i’d take martin in the third or fourth in a heartbeat

Reasonable assessment..

Rainey – That kind of talent is jusy itching to get out! He may mature at some point but I’m not liking the “bravado” attitude. I don’t care how fast or “quick to the game” you are, a head job is a head job! And if he’s got it now in college I can only pity the team that picks him up cause he’s a “ME” guy.

PASS BENGALS – Been there, done that!

Ranked on the "RB" who I think will have biggest Impact in the NFL.

Before you attack that I ranked Miller over Richardson, remember when everyone
thought that Mark Ingram (Bama) would be the second coming?

Bottom line……Miller did "more" with a lot less in front of him than Richardson.

Speed "does matter" in the NFL and Miller is the fastest player in college, period!
Faster than WR’s. Faster than CB’s. Faster than LaMichael James and Chris Rainey.

Speed, Shiftiness, Ability to run into the 3 C’s (my patent)
Creases,Cracks, and Crevices before they close up.
That’s what this kid does!

I’m from Miami and have seen this Kid play, and believe me when I tell
you that he will have the biggest Impact as a RB out of this years crop.

#1Miller
#2Richardson
#3Martin
#4Polk
#5James
#6Pead
#7Wilson
#8Rainey

Nobody else worth talking about.
