2012 Senior Bowl: Bengals Interested In Boise State RB Doug Martin?
As you know, the 2012 Senior Bowl, a college football all-star game in which top-tier players from northern schools play against NFL prospects from southern schools. According to Eric Galco, the Director of Scouting for OptimumScouting.com, the Bengals seem interested in Boise State running back Doug Martin as a scout from the team has been talking to him separate from the rest of the players and scouts.
#Bengals scout talking with Doug Martin away from main scout-interview herd. Just throwing that out there for you to ponder
The Bengals are definitely in the market for a new running back and this Ray-Rice like back could fit the bill. In the last three seasons, Martin, who stands at 5-foot-9 and weighs 223 pounds, carried the ball 593 times for 3,324 yards and 43 touchdowns. Right now ESPN Insider ranks Martin as the eighth best running back in this draft class.
Stay tuned for more Senior Bowl updates

im really not sure, if he needs to add that much weight anyways
its not really his running style to run through people. but im sure he can add 10-15 pounds to his lower body with out losing a step.

He said yesterday that he wants to add some body fat. He’s only at 5%. He’d be best suited to add it throughout his body.

true... he would know better than any of us if the extra weight would help or not
but the thing the really caught my eye, was when the bearcats lined Pead on the line of scrimmage as a WR. That shows me a lot about his hands and feet work. He is going to be a steal where ever he is drafted.
I definitely need to look more into this Martin guy. Because it looks like we can still get the back we need in the 2nd round.
AMAS
he looks closer to the 4.45 than to the 4.55
benson is/was about a 4.55 and this guy seems at least a bit faster.
I agree but Indy is a slow track now. Benson is probably a 4.65 guy currently.

YESSSSSSS
Number 1 fan of drafting him. Would be great fit for us and a good value in the 2nd round.
What do you do when there's no way out? Find a way to get deeper in it.
Agree---
there are going to be some RBs with good upside there in the 2-3 rounds—Martin is definitely a good choice.
I'm liking this kid more and more everyday.
In the 2nd Round he would be a steal…

I would love to grab in rnd 2
Looking like similar combine numbers as Ray Rice, but with a little more mass to him and a stronger upper body. And definitely has the team first “go to work” attitude Marvin strives for. Great addition to the team.
Bengals fan since day one.
Cardinals fan since I realized I had a choice.
Like the idea of going RB in 2nd-3rd versus early.......
glad we’re doing some homework on this guy. From what I’ve read he sounds like a good fit for our system.

In the second to grab him. He is my favorite back in the draft and reminds me of ray rice. Who is a pure power back that we can pair him with. My original thinking was we take Polk and then take lamichael James late but I think with Martin u need a bruiser and Scott becomes expendable

Anyone (Joe G?) know how old Doug Martin is??
I can’t find his DOB anywhere online. The reason I ask is that he was on BSU’s roster as far back as 2007 (so he could already be like 23/24), and he’s had close to 500 carries in college already, so his shelf-life (which is already super short for NFL running backs) may already be half expired if he’s, say, already 24. Lamar miller is only 21 and has had about 200 fewer carries, just by way of example.
In addition, and by way of comparison, Ray Rice is still ONLY 24 (and he’s already a 4-year seasoned pro.
This comment speaks nothing about Martin’s abilities as an NFL caliber), because by all accounts he is a very good prospect.
I am just curious about his age. Anyone know his age/DOB? I can’t find it anywhere online.

as long as you don’t run him into the ground and split the carries he’ll be fine.

Would Anyone Take Martin Over Chris Polk?
If so, Why? Polk at two inches taller is a better comparation to ray Rice. Take away Martins monster game. 20 carries and 200 yards and Polk is clearly the more consisitent of the two as per season stats and week to week stats. Polk had a weak OF Line. Marttin had a Great OF Line.
martins my 3rd behind
Richardson and miller. Martin seems to have a more well rounded game then polk in my far from expert opinion.

im just looking at his skill set
He’s got speed, he’s strong, decent hands, and runs hard. Polk to me seems like a Benson type back.
by JCompton41 on Jan 24, 2012 2:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
One are where Polk does NOT resemble Benson in the least is his ability as a pass catcher (regardless of how he looks in Senior Bowl practice)
The guy is a natural receiver out of the backfield, and had more catches than most (if not all) of the other top running backs (i.e. more than Richardson, Miller, Martin).
This ability, alone, differentiates him from Benson. Benson literally looked absolutely horrified whenever a ball was thrown his way. It was as if the football were a Texas boating patrol officer – he wanted no part of it, and just looked absolutely horrified of it!
by The_Black_Stripes on Jan 24, 2012 2:41 PM EST up reply actions
the lack of home run ability
Is what reminds me o a Benson type player
by JCompton41 on Jan 24, 2012 2:46 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I follow you
I guess I don’t necessarily need a home run hitter, as long as the back can consistently average over 4.0 per carry (Benson has proven he cannot), can consistently convert third and short (Benson has proven he can’t), can catch the ball out of the backfield (Benson has proven he can’t), has a nose for the goalline (Benson has proven to not have this ability), has the ability to make people miss/is elusive (Benson has proven to not have this ability), and has good vision (Benson has proven he doesn’t), then I am ok if the back doesn’t necessarily have home run ability. In the WCO, vision, patience, and receiving ability are all desired skills, not just home run ability.
by The_Black_Stripes on Jan 24, 2012 2:59 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
i agree 100% with that
But I think Martin shows all that, with home run ability. I do like polk too, just like Martin better.

Andy Dalton didn't overly impress anyone this time last year at the senior bowl practice
I even recall him fumbling the center-qb exchange a couple of times. Scouts were impressed with his demeanor and leadership skill, and all the intangible stuff that makes Dalton great, but stictly speakign of ON FIELD practices, A.D. was not overly impressive at the Senior Bowl last year.
You have to put these specific practices in their proper context. It is PART of the evaluation. The practice, in it of itself, is not the know all, end all.

What?
Polk is 5’11" 220lbs and Rice is 5’8" 212lbs. Martin is clearly closer to Rice when it comes to size at 5’9" 210lbs. I would take Martin over Polk. Martin doesn’t have an injury history and seems to play at a faster speed than Polk. Plus Martin was a productive running back in a pass happy offense. IMO Martin just seems like a more complete back and I would consider him the 2nd best RB in this draft behind Richardson.

Tell ya what,
There’s a lot that I like about this kid: his build, his hands, his feet, his BRAIN…. But, the biggest thing I’ve seen that I love is speed, speed, speed. I just don’t think you can measure this guys football speed on a track. Sure, straight line speed is needed to know, but his speed on the field is ridiculous. I’ve seen him play a couple times, but I’m sitting here watching this cat beat a DB to the corner of the endzone when the DB’s are taking great angles to the ball and their 40 times are probably right around the same, if not faster, than his. And it’s not just one DB. He’ll beat the Safety and the Corner from the front side of the field. That’s ridiculous

wouldn't read too much into it
The Bengals should be talking to everyone running back in the draft at this point!
Wes Bunting today:
Running backs in my view are the toughest players to evaluate during a week of practice at any all-star game. However, even with that being said Washington RB Chris Polk hasn’t been real impressive up to this point. He doesn’t display much of a first step, there is no real explosive quality to his game and he struggled in pass protection. Overall, he doesn’t look like a top three running back prospect to me in the class.
On the other hand, Boise State RB Doug Martin showcased a good first step; natural forward lean and can quickly decipher information at the line of scrimmage and change directions. He’s a fluid kid with a thick build and his initial quickness really stood out for a back his size. Looks like a future starting caliber running back at the next level.

And honestly that doesn’t matter as much to me when looking at a back. If he has speed, he will have it playing against lsu, or utep. If he has a burst, he has it. Granted tackles being misses makes people look better, but backs are so hard to scout, and I think that’s because game film sometimes doesn’t show the skills needed to be a back In the NFL.

Love Marting
I’ve expressed my interest to get Richardson if he drops, but I would be much happier if that option never presented itself and the Bengals were abel to get a stud Guard (DeCastro) and a starting caliber CB (Jenkins, Dennard, Kirkpatrick) in the first round and Martin in the second round. Highlights of this kid remind me of Ray Rice; low to the ground, quick, can move side to side, and always falls forward.
See?
I think he’s better than when Ray Rice came out of Rutgers. Ray Rice was tough to tackle because he was hard to see and had the heart of a Lion. Not to mention his legs are like tree trunks, but Martin has what Ray has NOW. Great build, great hands, great feet and he has the ability to see the field.

In the end, it comes down to who is available and who they believe fits in the offensive gameplan the best. To me Pead has everything you look for in a RB, I do like Martin too. In Today’s nfl you don’t need a running back to carry it 20-25 times a game you need 2 guys that can compliment each other and each get it 10-12 times a game maybe more.
i agree with Pead
There is something about him that makes me think he is a special back. Pead has great awareness and vision and hands. I said he reminds me a lot of chris perry. But could he possibly be the next marshal faulk???

I have no problem with Martin in the 1st or second round to replace Benson and Pead in the 3rd or 4th to replace Scott.

Well, I guess it kinda goes back to the "heart of a Lion" comment I made before
That was a screwy season in college football. Teams dropping in and out of the top five and ten like it was crazy. He played on Thursday night football like three times that season and I really liked what he could eventually bring to the table. I thought he was very smart, crafty, and did a great job of avoiding the deep blows that can hamper a smaller backs body. I just didn’t think he would get that big in such a short period of time. He gained weight, then put muscle on top of it. Incredible…. It was based off of size (my opinion on him in that draft). I just thought that in order to draft him, you would need to use him like Darren Sproles, but I’m not an expert, nor do I like to think I am haha.

I totally agree with you guys
only 1 problem, what happen if we take Barron in the 1st and Mays totally beat him out for the starting SS and then suddenly we have trouble with PT at the SS spot??
I don't think we could have enough SS or FS.
especially in the AFCN. If that was the case, where mays was good enought to beat out Barron. I would move Barron to FS, Mays at SS, and have Nelson as an extra CB to spy, biltz, cover etc…. Give nelson more freedom
AMAS
ahhh i see, sounds good too, but can Nelson cover WR in the slot and on the outside
if he can then we are going to have a Scary Secondary for years to come
for sure!
but that was his knock coming from the jags, that nelson was horrible with his coverage. didn’t really see that here and Nelson seemed to be covering for Crocker a lot.
Put nelson in position where he can roam around and he will be very similar to Troy Polamalu.
AMAS
wait why not have Barron and Mays in a Special Package with Reggie
Reggie as the FS and Barron as the SS and Mays as the Short zone cover safety so Nelson can roam in the back and Barron and Mays can hit anyone coming into their zones??
West Virginia ran that when Rich Rod was there
3 down lineman,3 linebackers, 2 corners and 3 safeties. Not sure if it would work in the pros but its definitely intriguing idea.
by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 3:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
we don't have the personell to do 3 down linemen
but we can take a LB out and place Mays in one of those spots.
AMAS
I was just saying how WV ran it
It would interesting to see, even though I dont see Nelson hold up consistently in one on one coverage.

and are still in the superbowl
That shows it can be done and done good. If it gets the best players on the field I’m all for it. I’m sure it would only work for special packages and vs select teams.

I think this is the year the light goes on in Mays head
He showed promise late in the year, especially against the first game against the Texans. Thats why i dont think safety gets picked round one. I also hate to mention, Crocker is still under contract and there is a lot of man love for him by the coaches.

Draft Pick Value Chart
Does anyone know if the 2012 value chart takes into account the lower rookie wage scale? I curious to see the impact.
to me, it would increase the value of a rookie, especially in the first round
you get talent for cheaper, so you don’t have to worry about the cap as much.
AMAS
You are correct
It makes getting good value and not reaching for players essential. We can add impact players in the first and they wont cost that much.
by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 4:00 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
what I mean is
does it make the value curve steeper, or flatter? It used to be so prohibitive to trade up in the first round, even to move up a few slots would cost a boatload of picks. It seemed that in the past, there was a correlation between the $ value of a rookie contract at a given slot, and the value in the chart. So with the rookie wage scale now being flatter, it would seem like the value chart should be flatter too. But, as you said, the earlier picks are worth even more now, since the club doesn’t have to invest so much financially, which would imply that the curve would be even steeper, if that’s even possible.
Or… I’m way overthinking this. :)
by EarthwormJim on Jan 24, 2012 5:41 PM EST up reply actions
value goes steeper, look at Julio jones last year.
like i said before. The value goes up for a first round pick because money wise they are cheaper. So if your a team you wouldn’t mind 5 first round picks because they are so much cheaper now than 3 years ago.
So if you wanna trade up to the first round, you will have to shell out a lot of lower to mid round picks to get value for that trade. I.E julio jones last year
but everything is relative, so the longer you wait to trade up, its going to cost you more
AMAS
Miller is rumored to need shoulder surgery
Hadn’t heard that before today
I like Martin
But not in the first round. I dont think he will be there in the second when the Bengals draft. Maybe someone will come calling and we can trade down, draft him and pick up a extra pick.

Who would Take Miller over Polk is the Question?!
The wait and see is on the table..Enjoy the Game! I take Polk over Miller. Polk can turn the corner! Simply watch U Tube and deside for yourself. Tape dosent lie.
If that's the logic you're going on
Watch Miller turn a corner on YouTube. I watch him turn two corners on one play against Va Tech. Got outside, turned the right corner, got hit and stuffed, then switched fields and took it around the left corner only to run two DB’s over downfield for a thirty five yard gain out of nothing.
by whodeycommish14 on Jan 24, 2012 3:33 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
That was a sick run. I dont get why people think Miller cant run between the tackles? Holes in the NFL close faster than they do in college. Having a quick intial burst is what should seperate prospects and I dont see that burst in Polk.
by EPK1979 on Jan 24, 2012 3:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah it was
Just when you thought he was going to break down after running about forty yards east-to-west, he completely turns it up and runs over a DB while another one was rapping him low. Guess who the first person to his feet and back to the huddle was? Not the two DB’s. I’ll just say that.
by whodeycommish14 on Jan 24, 2012 4:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Not hating on Polk
But i disagree. The Bengals offense hasnt had explosive plays from the running game for decades. Miller brings that element to the table more than any back in the draft.

MARTIN MARTIN MARTIN
This kid is choice. Perfect fit for Cincy.
To answer about Miller. Miller Runs with Pads high and is too indecisive in the backfield to be great between tackles back. Miller is a beast though, I’m not saying he isn’t. I also wouldn’t mind him in the back field. I just think Martin fits Cincy’s needs better. Martin has better hands, blocks better, isn’t injury prone (his body is built like a boulder), he’s been on a winning team, and I don’t think it will bother Martin if he doesn’t get tons a “touches”. Don’t’ think Martin would start bitching.
"and I don’t think it will bother Martin if he doesn’t get tons a "touches"
absolutely right… just look at the offense that Boise ran and how often they passed the ball with Kellen Moore, and he still produced
"When you see it open up and all you can see is the end zone, it’s hard to describe how relieving it feels." -Ced Benson

DAVID WILSON
Not seeing much about this kid from VT. I saw him for the first time against Michigan in the Sugar Bowl and he was quick, slippery, and had an ability to burst through holes he created on his own. Also a fantastic kick returner. Lamar Miller and Wilson offer themselves as return specialists if they end up not being able to carry the RB load.
He’s ahead of Martin, Polk, and Pead in my book.
Martin is a return man also

Yes he is
And a very serviceable one at that
by whodeycommish14 on Jan 24, 2012 5:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
He would be a great back up to trent Richardson if we could land both we are easily the most dangerous offense in the NFL with a.j green and if Jordan Shipley come back 85% or better
by Andrew Moore on Jan 24, 2012 6:03 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions
U could make a case that Martin is a better overall prospect.
by pray4gm11 on Jan 24, 2012 6:05 PM EST via mobile reply actions
true
im all for gettting a guy that can play his position and return kicks. I don’t like that tate just returns kicks, i get what their trying to do. But thats another open spot on the roster if we can get a guy that starts and returns kicks
AMAS
I like Richardson, but he plays with probably the best line in college. Haven’t seen nothing special bout him but great vision. Pead, Martin, James all bring something special.
by pray4gm11 on Jan 24, 2012 8:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Im telling you guys...
Isaiah Pead has something really special about him. Its that gut feeling they talk about, and what is interesting I want Richardson over everbody else for this years draft, but just have that feeling that Isaiah is something huge in the making…
It's nice to have that home run speed
But we need alot more out of a RB than just the ability to take it to the house. We need a guy that’s going to be able to lower his shoulders and plow forward for that 4 yrd gain. Polk and Martin are on the top of my list of RB’s not named Richardson. Their are a ton of guys that are on the street right now that everyone thought would be the next Sanders just because the were fast and had some moves. Scott isn’t a good RB and hasn’t shown he can catch any better than Benson. If we get the chance to take a 3 down back we better jump on it. If not I would be fine with a Pead type back.
by Bigcatdaddy on Jan 24, 2012 10:00 PM EST via Android app reply actions
U really need 3 effective rbs now
Gruden has said his rb don’t need 25+ carries to be effective in his system. If we take Pead early and Ganaway late that a be perfect. Ganaway is type of back ur looking for, 240+ solid speed and is not getting stop on ZERO, 3rd and 1’s. How many teams use 1 rb? Teams just don’t use 1 rb for 3downs anymore.

Wilson or Martin WOULD BE GREAT !!
Wilson is more than just spead,he has power and a nak for finding the end zone.Watch his highlights on utube.Martin reminds me of Rice .Hard to see until it’s to late.Fast feet, able to change direction without losing his speed. Both are better than Miller or Pead and harder to bring down. Besides Miller just went under the knife to fix his shoulder.(we don’t need that already!!) First we need to draft some huge guards that can block or nobody will be running very well.David DeCastro (Guard)17th and then Mark Barron(SS) or Janoris Jenkins (CB)21st.Second round go with a running back Wilson(RB) or Martin(RB).Third round I would go with Cordy Glenn (Guard) Then DL,WR,LB,etc.Get some young guards that we can have for 12-14 years. No more over the hill cheap players.WHO DEY
