Open Thread: Scouting And The Bengals

The season is close to being officially over and the Senior Bowl is right around the corner. That means the draft talk is in full swing and it's time to pick out which players you'd like to see on the 2012 Bengals roster. The Bengals have a lot of holes to fill at cornerback, safety, running back and on the offensive line.

What college players would you like to see in a Bengals uniform in 2012? The floor is yours.

They wouldn't draft Barron to compete for a spot

They would draft him to start, meaning the Mays experiment would be over.

by Animal_Like_Football on Jan 24, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

not necessarly

We could still use a lot of mays on passing plays or some type of blitz package.

Mays

What has led you to the decision that Mays can start at safety? His extensive playing time? That we traded a 7th round pick for him?

Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy as a hitter, and I hope Zimmer works his magic on him. But coverage instincts aren’t just learned overnight, and we will have no better idea at the draft than we do right now whether the light bulb wwill go on or not.

If Barron is there, he can start right away. Mays can still be useful to the team. But pinning our hopes on him is just foolish.

by EarthwormJim on Jan 24, 2012 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

That's what I meant though.

It would mean that Mays is not a starter and would be almost exclusively a special teams player / situational player. You don’t draft a first rounder to compete for a spot, you draft him to start there.

by Animal_Like_Football on Jan 24, 2012 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

Still would take Barron....

Even if we end up trading either him or Mays afterwards. Gives us a little flexibility….

then get Trumaine Johnson with the 1st pick of round 3
and then get trade our 21st pick of the round 3 for more picks

6’5" 315lbs, can play C/G or C with cook sliding to left G, in the AFC North, you gotta be big at C for all the NT’s we face, one of the knocks I have on Cook is he can’t hold his ground VS the bigger NT’s, but would make a terrific pulling G

From Yahoo:

Markelle Martin (DB, Oklahoma State) stood out as the feistiest defender. Martin growled with rage when McNutt caught a pass in front of him, and delivered a lot of contact in both 7-on-7 and full-squad drills. He will be worth keeping an eye on as a press or Cover-2 cornerback.

On the offensive line, Kelechi Osemele (G-T, Iowa State), stood out during position drills, routinely putting defenders on their butts.

The North is short on centers, so Kevin Zeiter (G, Wisconsin) has moved over to back up Tim Brewster (C, Ohio State). Zeitler put several snaps on the ground and took extra reps at center at the end of practice. Zeitler snapped a few times in practice as a college freshman, but otherwise never played center, even at the Pop Warner level. “It’s just a matter of me being excited,” Zeitler said of the bad exchanges. Brewster also missed an exchange, but aborted snaps can be expected when working with three different quarterbacks under totally new practice conditions.

Speaking of Brewster, he got into a brief shoving match with Mike Martin (DT, Michigan) after Martin beat him on an inside move during position drills. Brewster and Martin are familiar foes, of course, because of the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. “He’s one of my best competitors,” Brewster said after practice. “I love going against him.”

Kirk Cousins (QB, Michigan State) threw the prettiest pass of the morning: a 35-yard bomb on an out route that landed right in the arms of Marvin McNutt (WR, Iowa State). Unfortunately, McNutt dropped the pass.

by pemci on Jan 24, 2012 4:02 PM EST reply actions

Practice ended with Doug Martin (RB, Boise State) returning kickoffs. Martin was one of Monday’s stars and has looked like one of the best athletes on the field so far. Martin even lined up at fullback in front of Isaiah Pead (RB, Cincinnati) in what appeared to be a “speed” package for a few snaps.

..

by pemci on Jan 24, 2012 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

I love it!!!!

I would love to see Martin and Pead together in the back with stripes.

by GetMused on Jan 24, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

If we can't pick up Barron, I would love Markelle Martin...

I’ve watched a lot of (the real) OSU ball (Go Poke!), and Martin is a talented safety. He has instincts, delivers a hit and tackles well. Good center fielder type, very competitive. The Cowboys were very good this year (as a team) at creating turnovers and the offense’s success kept the defense on the field a lot.

I’d expect that if we wanted Martin, it would have to be the 2nd round and even then he may not quite make it to us.

by Boomer Lion on Jan 24, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Martin is a fs and Barron is a ss but

I WANT TO WIN SUPERBOWLS NOT POPULARITY CONTESTS

What makes a good running back great? What makes a good QB elite? A stellar offensive line. I am starting the campaign now with 17th pick we NEED David DeCastro. Becoming an unstoppable force in our running game and an unmovable object for pass protection. Do you want to win super bowls? Than this is our first pick with out question. Now our second pick needs to either be Baron or Martin because safety has become such a necessity in this pass happy league. Running back in the later rounds and bring in a solid corner in FA. ( I really want Cortland Finnegan)

by TDOG on Jan 24, 2012 4:45 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I dont think he gets to the 17th pick but im all for DeCastro

From just the players I"ve seen

DeCastro OG
Richardson RB
Barron S
Upshaw DE/OLB
Hightower ILB

Beyond that I’m in the dark more than usual.

But I think the Bengals will decide to go offense though. Take it to another level by adding a RB and WR and OG in the first three picks. Assuming they can get a couple corners in FA to start.

by BENGALS69 on Jan 24, 2012 5:57 PM EST reply actions

I think shipley, whalen, and Hawkins a do just fine

by pray4gm11 on Jan 24, 2012 6:02 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

As I said, I think they take it to another level, not stand pat with the same guys.

By getting a WR early. Then with a much improved line a hopefully very good RB and WR, that offense will be scoring quite a bit.

Simpson is done in Cincy. We’ll not see him back. I’m just guessing what I think the Bengals will do.

by BENGALS69 on Jan 24, 2012 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

I think Simpson will be back

he probably wont even spend a day in jail. So they can essentially sign a first round talent in jerome for real cheap.

Jerome = first round talent?

Gotta disagree there. Maybe third round talent who now has character/intelligence issues. I’d probably draft him in the 4th or 5th round if he were entering the draft today (hindsight is 20/20 though).

by Animal_Like_Football on Jan 24, 2012 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

he would go top 10 now

Come on give guy some credit. This was his rookie year basically and he was solid. Only knock I had on Simpson was he didn’t attack the ball. Outside of Blackmon who is better than Simpson?

by pray4gm11 on Jan 24, 2012 9:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I need a little Joe Goodberry to help me talk down the homers.

I love the Bengals as much as anybody, but Jerome (1) often runs the wrong route (2) lacks focus and consistency catching the ball (3) disappears for multiple games at a time.

Putting him as a top 10 talent is a diss to legitimate top ten talents like AJ Green and Calvin Johnson.

That said, he’ll be one of my all time favorite Bengals for the flip into the End Zone. Coolest play ever.

by Animal_Like_Football on Jan 24, 2012 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

Lets put it like this

He has first round athleticism, and 7th round football IQ

by The Dealio on Jan 24, 2012 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

ur combine numbers is what makes u 1st rd pick

Jerome was playing his 1st full year in new system, rookie qb, and horrible line. And to top it off he was under FEDERAL INVESTIGATION and played pretty decent. It might not look like it but if u ask coaches who made more mental errors and they’ll tell Green between the two. Simpson is a solid #2

by pray4gm11 on Jan 24, 2012 11:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

That's why I say we need to draft Usain Bolt as our next RB

He would light up the combine.

Also, a solid #2 does not go in the top 10 and I don’t think we can pass off a 4th year WR as a player who is basically in his rookie year.

by Animal_Like_Football on Jan 25, 2012 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

who?

Your not going to get anybody better than shipley in this draft unless u get Wright in first. Whalen and Hawkins are very nice dependable Wr who are going always be in right spots and have nice hands. Whalen might be better than Shipley and that’s saying something.

you cant teach vision and awareness. I swear every step Pead takes has a purpose. And he clearly has best hands and height out of the backs in the top 10

i would have to say the same

When i look at Pead, he is a little bigger version of Darren Sproles and he has the vision and the speed to cut it up the seam , Also i think he has the best hands out of all the back, maybe behind Richardson

by Touhue Cha on Jan 24, 2012 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

Pead and Ganaway will compliment each other well. Ganaway has nice set of hands and is a sleeper pick in my book.

by pray4gm11 on Jan 24, 2012 6:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

im not too sure about ganaway

but Pead does need to add a few more pounds, which I think he can add at least 10 to 15 with out losing a step. IF he runs in the 4.35 range at the combine (long shot), he will move into the first round. I promise!

West Coast Offense

Is a bell cow back away from greatness.

They’ll find a #2 receiver in free agency, and I think they’re very high on Binns and Hazelton. Shipley will EXCEL in the slot, and I think Ryan Whalen is going to be better than expected,

I know it’s not popular, but I think they have to take Richardson in the first. The extra pick gives them the ability to take a bit more risk, not to mention the new rookie scales make the risk far less.

I would have preferred Montee Ball, but I think Richardson could be an elite back.

Dallas had the triplets. They were 3-13 with just Irvin, 1-15 with Aikman and Irvin, and 7-9 with Aikman Irvin and Smith. Within two years they won their first Super Bowl.

Dalton, Green and Richardson would elevate the offense to unstoppable levels.
