Open Thread: Looks Like Zimmer's Here To Stay (knock on wood)

We need new pictures of Mike Zimmer. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)

It's beginning to look like the Buccaneers' hiring of Greg Schiano as their new head coach is pretty much official which means that Mike Zimmer will be where be on the Bengals' sidelines once again in 2012. This is great news (if it plays out this way) for the Bengals and Bengals fans as Zimmer is one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL.

That's three teams (Dolphins, Colts and Bucs) up and three teams down.

Share your thoughts on the Bengals coaching staff or anything else you want. The floor is yours.

More than happy to have him back.

Just feel he was given the run-around, along with those other guys, but they don’t matter as much, lol. No, I hope he gets his shot soon, he sure deserves it, IMO.

by Ben-GAL on Jan 26, 2012 1:34 PM EST reply actions

He definitely deserves it.

It’s just not his year. People think this might be his last shot to get a head coaching job. I disagree. What happens when the Cowboys bomb out again next season and the fans are calling for Garrett’s head? What about Buffalo and Chan Gailey? They started out hot this season and finished in the toilet. There’s always a surprise somewhere.

by whodeycommish14 on Jan 26, 2012 1:47 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I definitely don't think this was his last shot.

He may be head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals at some point, hehe.

Thoughts on Zimmer

I’m kind of sad that he won’t get a promotion this year, but I’m twice as happy that he’s staying.

Now if I were the Bengals, I’d call Zimmer’s agent and extend his deal.

Think of it this way. Lewis’ final year under his existing contract ends after the 2012 season, same as Zimmer. If Lewis decides not to return (as long as M.Brown wants him to return, Lewis will come back, I’m certain), then Zimmer just eases into the spot.

Agreed...

Sorry thank Zim did not get a promotion, but ecstatic that he will return to fulfill his contract….we have a little unfinished business from last year that I am sure Zim would like to finish. :)

by pemci on Jan 26, 2012 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

I just said the same thing to a friend of mine at work....

If I’m a representative of Mike Zimmer’s, I would try to be working an extension for sure. There could be blood in the water without an extension being presented yet to Marvin.

by whodeycommish14 on Jan 26, 2012 1:59 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Hypothetically, would you rather have Gruden or Zimmer take over?

I’ve been thinking about Marvin’s contract situation for a while. The more I think about it, the less likely I think it is he’ll be the head coach here in 2013. That may mean some kind of front office job, or it may mean him leaving the organization. But the terms of his recent extension (most notably how short it was) and the fact that, even after a fairly successful year, he isn’t interested in talking about a new extension makes me think he’s not interested in doing this at least for Cincinnati after this year. So the fact that Zimmer and Gruden are most likely both staying this year is great.

So which would you prefer? I love Zimmer to death, but I keep coming down on the side of Gruden. Of the two, he’s the only one who’s ever been a head coach in any capacity. For whatever reason, at least half a dozen teams have interviewed and passed on Zimmer for HC vacancies in the last 5 years. It might be he really just doesn’t have the temperament to be a head coach, while he is the PERFECT defensive coordinator. I think, in a perfect world, my scenario would be for Marvin to coach the team to a deep playoff run this year, be named something like Head of Football Operations next year, have Gruden promoted to HC, and sign ZImmer to a 45 year contract as DC for roughly $1 billion per year.

by eric nyc on Jan 26, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

I don't expect Marvin back either, especially if the Bengals get to the playoffs again.

Even less so if he finally wins a playoff game. If the Bengals revert to form and play worse than 9-7 then for sure he isn’t coming back.

I take it for granted that either Gruden or Zimmer will be HC. The fact Gruden just got extended and refused HC interviews suggest to my jaundiced eye that Mike Brown has made a promise or two to Gruden about a new j o b after next season.

by BENGALS69 on Jan 26, 2012 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I think players would love to play for either/or to be honest with you. This is my thing as well…. Could you see Zim standing at the podium after a tough loss and a reporter/columnist asking him what he considers to be a “stupid” question? I seriously think he’d jump down and back-hand somebody. I love Zim. I would love for him to be our HC if something were to fall through with Marvin, but he might be a littleratio rough on the edges for a GM/Owner to hire him. I just think Jay has that way of managing a football team, an organization, and a fan base.

By the way, I’m totally on board with the 45 year/1 bill contract for Zim. He deserves it as a DC and motivator.

by whodeycommish14 on Jan 26, 2012 2:36 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

OMG.

I would love to see his post-game press conferences after a loss and some reporter ask something dumb, heck it wouldn’t even have to be after a loss. I can tell you I would look forward to his post game pressers a lot more than Marvins.

by Ben-GAL on Jan 26, 2012 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

Lol oh absolutely

You definitely wouldn’t see as many fake smile and hear that god awful laugh of his hahaha. Every time I hear him laugh I think of the grandma on The Nutty Professor movies, “Aww… Hercules Hercules Hercules!!”

by whodeycommish14 on Jan 26, 2012 3:16 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Sad truth is...

…this might be EXACTLY why he didn’t get a head coaching position. Teams are going to want someone who can be a good diplomatic face. We all know that Zim speaks his mind, pulls no punches, and tells it exactly how it is. This is great as a positional coach or coordinator, but not as the public face of the franchise. The days of “PLAYOFFS!?!?!? Don’t talk to me about playoffs!!! PLAYOFFS!?!?!?” is over, except for beer commercials.

by Eric Shock on Jan 26, 2012 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

Now that its over, we can speculate

on who replaces Marvin? Lets imagine the unimaginable and the Bengals go 11-5 next season, Marvin works a miracle. He decides its time to spend more time with the family and isn’t extended. Would MB hire Zimmer as HC? Would Gruden be so gracious as to stay? Would Gruden be offered the HC? Would Zimmer stay?

So much to wonder about now besides the draft.

I don't know if he's the brilliant tactician that Dick LeBeau is

But the players LOVE playing for him. He consistently gets guys to play seemingly above their talent level. I dont’ think he’ll be inventing any new blitzes no one has ever seen before or re-defining any long held football beliefs in what it is to play defense, but he will constantly get the respect of his unit and make average players into good players, and good players into great players. I can’t wait to see what happens when he starts getting some REAL talent. Look what he’s doing with Geno. I think scheme is overrated. Baltimore’s defense has been what it is the past 15 years because of Ray Lewis, not because of the train of DC’s they’ve had coem and go. Zimmer brings that attitude to this team.

by eric nyc on Jan 26, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

I don't want to belabor the point, but ............

I really don’t see him turning average players into good players or good players into great players. He has a lot of top end draft picks and several #1’s. What happened to M. Johnson? Why does our secondary – in particular our Safeties – and in many cases our CBs seem to e so far out of position allowing WRs to be so open. I seldom see our WRs all by themselves on the TV screen. How could he not stop the bleeding on long multiple play drives to lose the game. I can understand a couple of lethargic plays in a row, but several of the opponents put together drives where there were 6-8 big plays in a row. All I know is that we have a much harder time putting expended drives togeher than our opponents do. I wish I could agree with you eric – I just can’t.

A lot of those wide open receivers

Had more to do with Chris Crocker, Kelly Jennings, and not having Leon Hall. Not so Zim’s scheme. Also, what’s wrong with Michael Johnson? Are you not watching the same games I’m watching? He mainly plays on long downs and is always and I mean ALWAYS around the QB. Just because a guy doesn’t have 80 tackles and 10.5 sacks doesn’t mean he’s not making an impact. MJ has gotten better each season and he’ll continue to do so.

by whodeycommish14 on Jan 26, 2012 3:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed, MJ had his best season this past year...

He splits time with Geathers, but I would not mind seeing him starting over Geathers.

Do u watch games? The reason u think that because he did have probably worse season out of all our d line. And our scheme been same since he been here. It’s overrated!!! Joseph had his beat year because of coaching that’s wasn’t here. And u can’t blame the players I blame coaches for playing them and being out of position. Flat out when u have 15 first or second rd picks u supposed to be solid. Damn what we gotta do give Zimmer all 1st rd picks to have dominate defense?

Unmmmm....

I will take a top 10 defense all the time. We have at least been in the upper half since he has been here, and this season it was a top 10 D. I will take it.

by Ben-GAL on Jan 26, 2012 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

when it matters what happens?

Be real watching ravens vs patriots game who d would u rather have between ours and patriots? Stats mean squat when u don’t play like a top 10 d against top 10 offenses. Wr played from behind mostly every game so that’s why we have top 10 d. Packers and Patriots defenses are considered bad because there always ahead so they give up tons of prevent yards.

by pray4gm11 on Jan 26, 2012 4:17 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

49ers had one of the best defenses in the league and where are they?

Btw, it is interesting that you mention Pats/Ravens game, ANY Defense would look good when you don’t get a single call against you. Yes, Balt had 0 penalties in their game against the Texans, and the Pats had 1 penalty called on them for 5 yards (and that was on special teams). Living in NE, I can tell you that it is not true, NE did not play with a lead, in fact, against the Bills and the Dolphins, they had to come from behind, and by wide margins….

by pemci on Jan 26, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

now thats politics

Do we get calls against ravens? I’ve called ravens BALTIMORE ANGELS all year. In every game that got bs call to give them win. 2out of 16 games? And when u know ur playing against Brady u have to be aggressive. We only took lead into 4th I remember one game and we LOST

by pray4gm11 on Jan 26, 2012 4:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Soooo, you think Zim is a bad coach?

And I would much rather have our D than the Patriots because their offense HAS to put up a lot of points to win, and we don’t have an offense to do that right now. If anything, our D kept us in so many games. Did they fumble the ball twice against the Cardinals??? Oh well, we have different opinions, all In know is that as a Bengals fan for 33 years, it has been a long time since I didn’t feel apprehensive when our D took the field, and these past few years I have felt nothing but confidence when they go out there. Do we have holes? Sure, but that is what we need to draft for.

by Ben-GAL on Jan 26, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

They up point because they can not because of there defense

It’s not our players its our scheme. Were to basic just play solid and don’t get beat. Were not aggressive at all. How many time did u see Johnson or Dunlap line up in different positions? And we refuse to double team other teams top weapon.

by pray4gm11 on Jan 26, 2012 4:36 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

The Bengals put enough pressure on the QB

They don’t have to gamble and blitz more people than they need to. He doesn’t have to bring all of these exotic blitzes to put pressure on the QB. I only remember a couple bad days to one receiver. Obviously, the playoff game with Andre going over 100 on his forty-five TD catch. Torrey Smith had a big day in Baltimore. Owen Daniels had a pretty good game in the first Houston game. Enlighten me as to why they would have to double the other squads best target.

by whodeycommish14 on Jan 26, 2012 4:52 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

stop drinking at games looking at all hot chicks losing focus

I can tell u ain’t go to games to watch them. We only held one team in check and that was Buf. Every other game we didn’t contain or stop the other team passing game. U double whoever the qb targeting and make somebody else beat u. Name one game we applied that strategy?

by pray4gm11 on Jan 26, 2012 8:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Ben Gal, I don't think we finished in the top 10 defensivly but that is not really my point

You can play very good D for 50 minutes and be a top D. Unfortunately the game is 60 minutes long and it only takes 10 minutes of mediocre D to lose games. My point is that we have to stop settling for pretty good if we are to go further than we have been. I hear a lot of excuses but the reality is that we again failed to get it done. Zimmer is a good coach, I will give him that and I an okay with him as our DC but the reality is he has high round draft talent in a lot of positions and has had several years “to install his system”. Talk like “he had no OTAs” and “a shortened off season” fall short of my ears. Every team had that. I understand that it really feels good to be in cintention but I want more than tha.t I want us to be one of the four last teams standing and I will accept what happens from there as anyone can win on a given day at that point.

I really don’t care where our D is ranked or our O for that matter. That is fodder for the media. It is the win total that matters. Hey, I am old. I don’t have another 20 years to wait for a SB appearance. I would like to watch a Bengals SB without the hinderance of drooling all over myself.

Is that so? Better than I thought, but like I said

You can be a top 7 defense and still lose a lot of games if the D folds when the pressure is on. That is what I saw several time. Yes, we had a good D but it need to be better when it matters, if we want to be among the last four teams standnig.

Are you serious?!

Actually, when Dunlap was healthy, he was slowly but surely playing on more early downs than Geathers. The Bengals start their DE’s according to the type of offenses they’re playing. Hell, Frostee Rucker even started a couple games this season. MJ93 will only get better. And so will the Bengals D-line. Who would you rather have as the Bengals DC?

by whodeycommish14 on Jan 26, 2012 4:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

they want Dunlap to be an every down player

and so does Dunlap. He has all the tools and ability to be a great DE for us, he just has to work for it. With that said…. Our DL is the best position group we have on the field and they will get better… thats scrary to think about if your an opposing olinemen lol

by Trevor 85 on Jan 26, 2012 3:26 PM EST reply actions

That may be true in a way, but isn't the DC responsible for who he puts on the field?

He has some pretty good talent and all teams have injuries. A really good DC finds a way to improvise and overcome. Yea, Crocker had a bad year and Hall got hurt but to make that a built in rationalization for blowing 4th quarter leads is not going to get us anywhere near where we need to be. Zimmer needs to step up and be who many here think is. There is a big difference between pretty good and really good and that difference determines who comes out on top.

One over looked problem for Zimmer

Why didn’t MB hire him after the 2010 season when Marvin and the boys laid
A 0-10 egg?
Marvin was out of contract. MB could hire Zimmerman as HC yet we had that desperate and messy rehire of Marvin Lewis. What’s wrong with Zimmer, other owners had to be asking.

Coaching personality

We all know that Zim can have an abrasive, “tell it like it is and pull no punches” sort of mentality. While this is awesome for a coordinator or other guy trying to inspire his guys to play their hearts out (which is one reason the Bengals players love him so much), NFL teams want a head coach that can be a manger and a public face.

An earlier comment mused about him in a post-game press conference after a tough loss. Woe to the sorry reporter who would dare ask a “dumb” question. That’s Zimmer. And while that’s a great sound bite for the “old school tough coach” which Zimmer is, that’s not what NFL teams want. They want the diplomat who is going to weigh their words carefully and put a good face forth for the team. Personally, I think that’s what has held him back. But… That’s a benefit for us.

by Eric Shock on Jan 26, 2012 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

He coaches the same way as he interviews, apprently. The knock on him, was he was to “honest”, meaning he doesnt’ take sh*t from any body and will just say it like it is. And that usually doesn’t translate good in the front office as it does on the field.

With the young group that we have on defense, they seem to like to be coached that way. It is what it is with coach Zimmer and he coaches with passion.

What do yall see or hear this at? Only one of our groups look like they on same page with each other is d line with younger group. Secondary and Linebackers always out of there gaps and don’t communicate with each other. Crocker and Clements have 25+ yrs in this league, no way either one should be out of position.

So you say they don't listen to him.

Tell me this. You also say we need a new LB and new DB coach, and I am not gonna say I completely disagree with that. But if Zimms players don’t listen to what he is teaching and instilling in them, is it just coincidence that once he came here we have been in the top half of the league in defense? I mean it has to be something, and it can’t be the other coaches since you say they stink, it can’t be Zimm since you say they don’t listen, so it has to be coincidence then right?

Crocker is old and finished.

Nate Clements can’t go a full season at a high level anymore. These guys you’re talking about are four years removed from their prime. Zim actually made Crocker better than he was I think. after losing the lynchpin of our secondary….it’s been well reported that losing Leon severely limited what we could do on D, so he dialed back the defense and played more base coverages….and still finished top 10 D…oh, and our entire starting LB core was basically new this year (Rey, first year in the middle, and lawson & howard first year in the scheme)

And he may never get a HC job because of this.

It does not mean he would not be a good one, I mean who really knows. Like AMA said, Zimm is a tell it like it is, like it or not, type of guy, and there may be no FO that is willing to put up with that.

Ben Gal, being a manager I am sure you understand the concept of a skill set

The skill set for a DC is completely different than that of a HC. Some DCs can develop HC skills and some cant. LeBeau is probably the best DC in the business and he was a horrible HC.

from zimmer on bengals.com

If the 2nd best dt is available and the 4th best cb is available were taking 2nd best dt. Were taking best player available I’m looking to upgrade every position. What I been saying all along we have only 1 guaranteed starter on d.
