Open Thread: The 2012 Senior Bowl
Many of tomorrow's NFL players will be showcased this Saturday at the 2012 Senior Bowl, scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m. (Eastern) on the NFL Network. Last year's game featured future Bengals like offensive guard Clint Boling and quarterback Andy Dalton, who completed three of seven passes for 22 yards passing.
What tomorrow's players today at the 2012 Senior Bowl, and follow along with our own Joe Goodberry.

But Polk is the type of RB who will be better in-game and even better as he gets a feel for his OL. He’s a very instinctive runner. Needs continuity.

Joe - any news re: Doug Martin's age? I can't find it anywhere
He was on Boise states’ team as far back as 2007, but I can’t find his age.
I think him as a prospect, but he may be a Russian spy considering the “secrecy” surrounding his age.

Awesome - thanks!!
So he is essentially only 2 years younger than Ray Rice, yet Rice just completed his 4th year in the league. I don’t mean to be a stickler about age, but it seems to be an issue with rbs, more so than any other positions. Martin also had over 500 career carries in college. I really like him as a prospect, though.
Thanks for find this out!

Trumaine Johnson
Why so low? If he played in a bigger school he would be 1st round. He;s a ball hawk along with Casey Hayward that’s exactly the type of CB we haven’t got. Josh Robinson?
Exactly. In a deep class, small schoolers will be ranked lower. He’s still a 3rd rounder. Haven’t watched Johnson. I won’t rank somebody I haven’t watched.

Interested to see how OLB Sean Spence plays
He had a pretty solid week at practice, and considering that Zimmer is on record as saying, “We have to improve at EVERY LEVEL on defense”, I expect to Bengals to really focus on defensive playmakers at all positions. Rivers and Howard enter the final years of their contract, and Manny is an UFA. Moch provides no guarentees, either. I think this defense desperately needs defensive playmakers. I like Sean Spence and we’ll see how he plays today.

How do you feel about Barron?
I know he plays safety but I agree we need an upgrade at a play making position. But SS last year was the biggest liability on the defense. Think if Crocker would have just gotten 2 INT this year, it could have changed the out come of the year… not joke.

Love Barron
If drafted by the Bengals, we would have the Red Rifle, and a Barron (I.e. a Red Baron – great pizza, and even greater ad campaign back in the day)

no way Martin stays on the board past 40. Washington will pick him up with their 2nd round pick if they don’t address it in the first

yea the more I watch pead vs the other backs, the more it makes sense for the bengals to pick him up
if you look at the plays the Pead is more successul at… its out of the shotgun. With a slot or TE and two WR. To me it sounds like he would excell under Gruedens style offense.
Miller would be tempting but then we would have to adjust our style of offense back to last year and think we are going to let gruden do his thing,
AMAS
Tampa bay might too

yea there will be 5 RB taking by the 53rd pick
almost every other team can use a fresh RB year in and year out. The average RB is in the league about 3 yrs. Traditionally speaking.

one team i suspect might be looking for a rb in the 2nd - 3rd round and not considered a threat to draft one
the pats.
BenJarvus Green-Ellis will be a free agent and hasn’t been all that for the pats in 2011
"the bengals are not a west of the 104 longitude team."
Might be time for him to get replaced
But he’s been useful and is kind of what they look for in their RBs.
"It’s time people started realizing just how good a player Carlos Dunlap already is, and that starts with the Bengals. They gave him a season-high 58 snaps and what was the result? Carnage on the right side of the Seattle line." -Pro Football Focus
Washington?
They had 2 rookies this year that each had 100 yard games. Guys I wanted in the 3rd and 6th rounds, respectively, in Helu and Royster. I don’t see them taking a RB in the first few rounds with all the other needs they have.
aren't they in a division with Dallas, Eagles, and Giants? I don't think their division is weak by any means
AMAS
Just because ESPN thinks it's the most important division in football doesn't mean it's a good one
The Giants won the division with 9 wins. The Eagles were just flat horrible. The only months the Cowboys are in the playoff discussion are every single August and September, when they’re in the top 5 for super bowl favorites despite sucking every single year. It’s not a strong division.
i don't think its the best division but its defenately not weak
Their division is like our division where we consistantly send teams to the conference championship games. I tihnk becuase of the competition between divisonal teams.
AMAS
I disagree, but it's not really relevant anyway
we’re talking about a team with 2 impressive rookies at RB and whether they’ll draft yet another RB in the 2nd round. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
can see maybe a DT
no way Shanahan passes Martin up in the second. I think their Oline can take a lot of credit for those 100 yrd games
AMAS
They play 3-4
they aren’t taking Martin in round 2

no matter how good your line is
you don’t have consistent 100 yard games rushing with absolutely no pass attack. Helu is a stud.

NFL network analyst had some good things to say about Dalton
Marshall Faulk hit it spot on for Andy. Faulk said Dalton was good at throwing WR open and that he adjusted to pro’s very well. The only knock Dalton would be his arm strength, he still has area’s of improvment
AMAS
Reps and weight room for Dalton this offseason!!!
He needs to get with Brees this offseason!!!

there is little doubt in my mind that Dalton cant get stronger
I just think he never really had to with his intangibles. Dalton has good anticipation so he probably didn’t have to throw as hard or deep in high school and college. Hopefully he can develop an elite arm in a few years.

PI should be a 15 yard penalty in the NFL
too many games decided by 35, 40 yard penalties that are judgement calls
and lose all those huge penalties against AJ Green? sometimes those were the best offensive plays of the game

I read someone say he’s best fit for a 5 tech.. do you agree? I think he can play as a traditional 2/3 tech DT in a 4-3.
Not as a starter, I wouldn’t want two small DTs starting

There's the good & bad with Pead
He’s quick & laterally explosive, but lacks vision and isn’t strong in tackles. Also, they’ve replaced him with Herron on last two pass plays. Can’t block yet.

I think it's indecision.
Between the tackles if there isn’t an obvious hole like you said, he sort of sits and thinks for a second instead of just attacking. Gets swallowed up.
Just went back to his run.
He sits in the pocket and the intended hole opens up, he sees zack brown and decides to take it right where a new hole has opened. Zack Brown gets blocked and that original hole stays open while the one he chose gets closed. So maybe it wasn’t indecision, just a bad decision. Not trusting his line I guess.
the first run he had the chance to cut back. There’s different kinds of vision: Vision to the hole & Vision after the LOS.

that is what Benson lacks
Vision…he has the physical side of it…missing vision

by ticalcaldwell on Jan 28, 2012 5:14 PM EST up reply actions
lol there is nothing wrong with Peads vision
there was nothing on that run, he had no blocking.
AMAS
those are his strengths but if you watch his film
he would fit really good in Grudens style offense, Pead isn’t going to run inside the tackles like Steven jackson, but he sitill good enough to get a few yards. But if ever gets space, he can take it all the way
AMAS
and thats why I rank him where I do.

i get that and its just a matter of opinion what you want your RB to do
but I really think we are moving away from that one back system where the RB takes the load and runs it up the middle.
AMAS
I'm not sure sure we're moving away from up the middle
seemed like that’s all they had B. Scott do this past season and that isn’t his strength
by Oregonbengalsfan on Jan 28, 2012 5:23 PM EST up reply actions
lol im not saying your never going to run up the middle, Im saying, they style is moving away from the middle
meaning that play calling for running plays isn’t primarly going to the middle
AMAS
I'm not seeing it.
We hardly went outside
by Oregonbengalsfan on Jan 28, 2012 5:31 PM EST up reply actions
because we had benson
not pead or martin …. I think Marvin will let Gruden do his thing and you can tell by the end of the season we kinda went away from the traditional running game
AMAS
and they played to his strengths most of the time and that was to the out side
i know you have to run it up the middle every now and to keep the defense honest
AMAS
No most of Scott's runs were up the middle
by Oregonbengalsfan on Jan 28, 2012 5:36 PM EST up reply actions
Couldn't understand why they kept running him up the middle
when his strength is to the outside
by Oregonbengalsfan on Jan 28, 2012 5:37 PM EST up reply actions
i just know his bigger runs were to the outside and i figured he had mroe carries to the outside
which would make the most sense
AMAS
Yeah, and I'm not trying to knock Pead
but if he isn’t going outside, I don’t think he’ll be any more effective than Benson or Scott up the middle

Good
He ranks between 2-5 on RB rankings. So it depends on how many RBs you think get selected between pick 17 and 53. I don’t think more than 3 will be taken in that time.

Might be really bad that we are losing Coyle then.
The Dolphins took him for his ability to teach anyone, or so I’ve read. Perhaps Nelson’s improvement is more Coyle teaching than Zimmer/scheme. Hmm..
It could be. I thought of that also.

bad teacher then
It’s seems only players seeing a shot at playing time is the top draft picks. How many years we then took a corner if safety late and he developed?

i thinkg 10-15 touches on offense and special teams. At this point, but once he starts to develop in the NFL he will be able to take a lot more of the load.
AMAS
well Joe
you said in another post, wait till we see how they play in the game, thoughts?

Would never have thought that would be the case.
Good for him. Still don’t think he goes in the first—solid second rounder.

but you never know with the combine coming up

Pead is moving up in my RB rankings!
He was my #8 RB before this game…
Now he’s my #7 RB. He jumps LaMichael James because of his punt return ability.

but honestly, how many Pierce & Polk games have you watched? It’s ok if you haven’t, I’m just trying to gauge where your rankings come from.

just watched practices and wasn’t good for Polk, great for Pead, held off judgement and waited till the game like you suggested, my opinion didn’t change

But I can’t completely change my rankings off of one All star game. I still think Polk will be a better NFL RB.

Is there a #1 in two back system? I think Ganaway and Pead would compliment each other very well.
by pray4gm11 on Jan 28, 2012 7:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Sure, I think Bradshaw is the #1 while Jacobs is the #2. Ganaway & Pead would be fun and also risky. Neither can block. You’d need a 3rd down back still.

so yall would pick guy with size over MVP?
This ain’t NBA, rb don’t have time to develop. How many times taking guy with best measurements killed us? U gotta try that in later rounds. We need sure fire productive players in 1st rd. Any time u win an all star game MVP, and player of year in ur conference that’s not luck. Dude has major skills. Was best.offensive player on both teams
by pray4gm11 on Jan 28, 2012 7:22 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Here’s the thing, my top 6 ALL HAVE SKILLS. It’s not just Pead. So if two guys have similar grades, you go with the guy with the typical NFL body.

and they haven't played any one at 200 pds that can cut and move like that
but I agree he can gain a few pounds, but its not going to be a problem
AMAS
Why hasn’t Michael Johnson gained weight? It’s not always a given. Developmental players don’t go until round 3 unless they’re first round picks or QBs.

but Johnson isn't as talented as Pead
but has the skills all ready to be productive, but i don’t its out of the question for him to gain those few extra pounds to protect him self
AMAS
what?
Johnson is/was dripping with raw talent. He’s as talented a DE as their is in the NFL.

they tried him at LB, so I’m sure they told him not to lose weight, then put him back at DE, he will put it on, might see it next year hopefully

just to clarify
he played great, but he went down awful easy when someone did get to him, he could be like Barry Sanders, where you lose 2-5 yards alot but break some big gains too

Pead had a nice game but
No way he goes in the first. Maybe if he lights up the 40 at the combine. I still see him as a 2nd to 3rd rounder. I think he will have a productive career as a change of pace back and return man. He doesn’t have the frame to be a feature back in this league but thats ok, a team will still get a pretty good player. As far as some people on CJ that compared him to Payton, they must have never seen him play.
It was me, I'll stand by what I say
I’m 37 and have seen Payton, Faulk and Sanders, and in my opinion Pead compares to all 3 of them, I could be wrong, but I’d be willing to bet I’m not

Wasn't trying to disrespect
Payton was one of the greatest I have seen as was Sanders and as much as I think Pead will have a good career, Pead will never come close to those players. I respect your bold prediction and being a UC fan I hope your right but I just don’t see him being that big of a impact at the next level.
