Open Thread: Pro Bowl Afterthoughts and Super Bowl Week

HONOLULU, HI - JANUARY 29: Patrick Peterson #21 of the Arizona Cardinals intercepts a pass meant for A.J. Green #18 of the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl between the AFC and NFC at Aloha Stadium on January 29, 2012 in Honolulu, Hawaii. (Photo by Kent Nishimura/Getty Images)

It's the last Monday before the 2011-2012 NFL season is officially over. We saw four Bengals players in the Pro Bowl game yesterday, with great performances by Andy Dalton and A.J. Green. What did you think of the game?

It's also the kickoff to Super Bowl week in Indianapolis. Got a prediction on the game? Have you placed any bets? Talk about it.

I think the ProBowl

should be an actual game and not.

“Players People Voted 4 Playing Half Assed Football”

or the PPV4PHAF for short.

or we need to rename or just cancel it. if no one wants to get hurt they should not attend.

I want to see it actually mean something. worst All-Star game of any sport.

it will never happen

players are investments, and the franchises don’t want their investments getting hurt. because of this, they need to either end the thing or people need to accept that it will never be more than a friendly scrimmage.

I'd like to see them combine the pro bowl

With the senior so we can see some of these prospects go up against talent. Winner still get 50K, you know the college kids would at least be trying. AND before you have say it, I KNOW ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN:)

My Pro Bowl fix

1) Scrap the Pro Bowl/Hawaii idea
2) Have a Rookies vs 2nd Year Players Game. Call it a Young Stars Game like the NBA has.
3) Have this game in the same city as the Super Bowl on the Sunday before.
4) Have an awards show (like they currently are starting this year), for the Yearly awards and All-Pro teams. Invite the Young Stars and both Super Bowl teams. Red Carpet for the wives.
5) Winners get $75,000 & losers get $25,000. (Current is $50k vs $25k)
6) Offensive & Defensive MVPs get Under Armor or Nike sponsorship for the year worth $500,000.
7) Every team must have one representative.

All of these changes should improve the intensity and value of the game. The younger players already play harder and they need the money and exposure more than the veterans.

What happened to the Skills Competition?

Hell with the game those were the best thing about the pro bowl. I remember Palmer winning the long throw and Chad winning the hands competition. It was cool to watch the QB’s throw at targets hooked to golf carts and linemen putting up 225lbs 30 times. Ahhh the good ol’days lol.

What about the worst NFL team playing the BCS champ?

Never happen but you talk about some broken egos. I think Bama could play with the Colts. OSU could’ve beaten the Colts.

lol

that would be hilarious…thats good..

hell yeah +1

I like it Joe…..I think you pointed out a great point as well. The younger guys play harder and are still trying to prove themselves..I know this wont make it perfect but I would like to see a lot of the great rookies we have in the NFL…

lol wait? they still get money if they lose?

I think the bengals organization should let the league know that doesn’t work.

Since its only rookies vs sophs

What about making the coaching staffs the current stars of the game? fans vote for the players that coach each team. Just a thought.

That would be cool. Or I’d watch retired players coach.

Ok, as Tim Ryan says on Sirius Radio,

I’ll talk about it.

Giants by 14.
No bets.

The Pro Bowl was an eye sore. I watched the first 4 snaps and turned it off.

Pro Bowl

Dalton looked like the better Rookie of Year candidate.
Agreed, the game was really uninteresting, and had there not been Bengals playing I would not have been watching.

It is going to be tough to watch the entertainer and icon receiving ROY….yeah I wouldnt have watched either if it wasnt for our guys

However the AFC D did make it interesting

after thaey felt the onside kicks were “a slap in the face” (source: Geno Atkins).

Pro Bowl

Everybody would feel different about the pro bowl if we had seen one of our four players getting carted off the field. I vote the game not even be played

by bnglsfan on Jan 30, 2012 7:06 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I agree with you on that

if any of our guys got injured…I would be cursing the entire state of Hawaii

The should take the word "Pro" out of the title

and call it “techmo bowl” because their is nothing professional about it!

It hurts to say that, I’m rooting for the little brother. But That’s what it feels like to me. 35-20
No bets. My feelings barely surpass 50% accuracy.

Add more money, winner takes all should at least make the Pro-Bowl look like football

Super Bowl
I think we are in for another tight game winning FG Pats 24-23

This is just a "Touch Football" game for the pros. A free trip to Hawii as a reward for

being either a popular of recgonised player. Nothing more. I is just a fun time for all involved if not for the serious football fan. Anyone who expects it to be real football needs to adjust their expectations. It isn’t meant to be fun for us, though it is marketed to be. I have no problem with it being what it is. The game is just an after thought and much more hype than substance – and that, IMO, is what it should be. Real football means potential injuries. Did anyone want either Dalton of Green to risk injury in an insignificant game. My apologies to the Bard but "it is strutting and fretting an hour on the stage , full of sound and flurry signifying nothing.

well said…The pro bowl is what it is…Hopefully it changes but for now…this is what we got…kinda like the college bowl system…obsolete and kinda pointless

I don't know

maybe flurry is more apt. I sure didn’t see a lot of fury. haha

When I was a kid in the 80s, it seemed like players actually played hard in the pro bowl

Did things actually change, or am I just remembering it incorrectly?

To me, it seems the big $$ and fear of injury has surpassed the actual attempt to play a real game.
