Around SBN: Rondo On Slowing Heat: 'They've Got To Hit The Deck, Too'

Hey we're in the Post Season, so lets talk about this Off Season:)

Here's a list of the Bengals 2012 Free Agents and what I would do, if I was playing GM:).

1. Reggie Nelson, I'd try to resign him, he is currently making around $1.6M and I think you could bring him back for about the same, maybe a slight raise up to $2M. + $400,00

2. Bobbie Williams, I'd try to resign him, he is currently making around $2.6M and I think you could bring him back for slightly less, I'd offer him 2 years $3.6M, which would be around $1.8M a year and you would save $800,000/year on the cap. - $800,000

3. Cedric Benson, Let him walk, he is currently making $3M this year. A rookie drafted in one of the top 3 rounds would save us a ton of money with the new CBA in place, and would probably also be an upgrade at the position. - $3M

4. Jerome Simpson, I'd try to resign him, he is currently making around $926,000 and I think you could bring him back for about $1 million a year, which would be a aise but would not break the bank. +$74,000/year (this signing is pending on legal issues

5. Manny Lawson, I'd try to resign him, he is currently making around $3M this year and I think you could bring him back for about the same on a multiple year deal (3 years), and would have no cap adjustment. =

6. Frostee Rucker, I'd try to resign him, he is currently making around $1.25M and I think you could bring 2im back for about $2M a year (3 year deal), which would be about $750,000 raise. + $750,000/year

7. Andre Caldwell, Let him walk, he's only making $555,000 and is still pretty cheap but at this point he's just taking up a roster spot. - $555,000

8. Pat Sims, I'd try to resign him, he is currently making around $1.4M and I think you could bring him back for about $3M a year, which would be a $1.6M raise. + $1.6M

9. Mike McGlynn, I'd try to resign him, he is currently making around $675,000 a year. I think you probably need to get him to about $1M a year for him to stay, which would be about a $325,000 raise. + $325,000

10. Anthony Collins, I'd try to resign him, he's currently making $675,000 a year. I think you probably need to get him to about $1.5m a year for him to stay, which would be about a $825,000 raise. + $825,000

11. Brandon Johnson, I'd try to resign him, he's currently making $1.75M a year. I think you are going to need to get him to around $2.75M to keep him around, which would be a $1M raise. + $1M

12. Adam Jones, Even after his melt down against the Texans, I'd try to resign him. He's currently making around $640,000 this year, so your are going to have to up his salary, I think you probably need to get to around $2M a year to keep him, which would be a $1.6M raise. + $1.6M

13 Donald Lee, I'd let him walk he's making an undisclosed amount of money but he's a veteran whose been around for a while so I would estimate that he's making around $1.5M. - $1.5M

14. Gibril Wilson, I'd let him walk he's making an undisclosed amount of money but he's a veteran whose been around a while so I would estimate that he's making around $1.5M. - $1.5M

15. Mike Nugent, I'd try to resign him, he's currently making around $640,000 and I think we could bring him back for around $1M, which would be a $360,000 raise. + $360,000

16. Johnathon Fanene, I'd been convinced to try and resign him. He's making an undisclosed amount of money but he's a veteran whose been around a while so I would estimate that he's making around $2.5 and I'd try to keep him around that number just for multiple years (2-3 year deal), which should have no cap adjustment. =

17. Dennis Roland, I'd let him walk he's making an undisclosed amount of money I would estimate that it's around $600,000. - $600,000

18. Kelly Jennings, I'd let him walk, he is currently making $1.85M and we could bring in a way better corner through the draft. - $1.85M

19. Nate Livings, I'd let him walk he's making an undisclosed amount of money and I would estimate that it's around $600,000. - $600,000

When you break it down we are going to be adding about 9 million dollars annually to the salary cap just by doing what I believe it will take to retain our own guys ( at least the guys I want us to keep). Now having said that, we will also be trimming about 12 million off the books by letting the other guys (the ones I don't want us to keep) walk in free agency. (keep in mind this does not include the money it will take to replace the guys we let walk but with the new CBA and all of our draft pick this should still be a doable proposition).

Note: Chris Crocker is due make about $1.75 million next year, Keith Rivers is due to make about 2.2 million dollars next year and Brandon Tate is due make an undisclosed amount of money next year. All these guys can be cut if necessary, which would free up about another 4 to 5 million dollars annually.

For LB depth, we still have Roderick Muckelroy (whose on IR) coming back next year, along with Donte Moch who will hopefully be healthy for an entire season. An then we have DeQuinn Evans whose also on IR sitting down there on the practice squad, he can also add depth to the position.

As a return man, if we bring back pacman, we still will need to address CB through the draft and/or free agency and with Leon comming back next year, Pacman will play a less vital role, therefore we can have him return punts and Hawkins or Scott return kick offs to replace Tate.

At safety to replace Crocker, we have both Taylor Mays and Roberts Sands sitting in the wings. I think we could go 3 different routes to fill this spot.

1. Play Mays and/or Sands
2. Draft a Strong Safety in one of the top 3 rounds
3. Draft a top CB, and assuming Leon comes back healthy and we resign Pacman, we could have these two (Leon and Pacman) be the starting CBs, slide our draft pick into the 3rd CB position and move Clements over into Crocker's role at SS.

Based on the final numbers, I do not think it should be out of the question for us to go out aggressively in the free agent market and go after a top rated guard or 2nd WR to play opposite AJ. My top priority would be a guard and I would go hard for Nicks or Grubbs. My next priority would be WR, even though we have Shipley coming back it would be cool to have one more veteran piece at that position, I would target Garcon/Meachum. I know a lot of people on here also like Michael Bush (Oakland) for a RB, but IMO I think we should address the RB position through the draft.

FYI - these next guys are restricted FA and none of them are high priced guys we really need to worry about losing at this point, therefore I have not included them in the numbers game.

Chris Pressley
Vincent Rey
Jeromy Miles
Cedric Peerman
Clark Harris
Dan Skuta

I thought this would be kind of fun to throw together, so feel free to let me know if to you agree or disagree with any of the moves. Also, please let me know if I made any mistakes on the free agents (not grammar mistakes - LOL) or screwed up any of the numbers.

I agree with almost everything except Fanene.

He’s always putting pressure on the QB, has the heart of a lion and is part of the
Peko & maualuga clan.

He’s also a Veteran among the youngsters on our team and has done nothing
to warrant us not wanting him back (for a few more $).

I love his aggressiveness! & HE ALWAYS PLAYS HARD.

Agree...I like Fanene and think we should keep him.

I also want to keep Adam Jones. I hope he doesn’t try and mess around with how much he thinks he should be making. The Bengals gave him the chance no one else would (like so many others, haha). And what about Laurent Robinson in free agency? I doubt the Cowboys let him go, but I like him more than Garcon and Meachem. And they probably cost about the same.

I actually flip flopped on Fanene several times and would not be oppossed to keeping him at all

But I could not find his stupid salary anywhere and was not sure how expensive he would be to retain, therefore I figured to save money we could pick up a pretty good young D-line man in the 3rd round (to replace him) after we take our CB, RB, and Guard in the first 2 rounds.

I think Anthony Collins

will be difficult to keep if he isn’t a starter. He CAN be a starter on a team and would jump at the opportunity.

And I also agree with gratefulmax and M Shop on Fanene.

Kelly Jennings has started playing well and could be good for depth at CB.

Donald Lee is a good veteran presence for the tight end crew and we could keep him on for cheap. He’s done well this year also.

I’m not so sure on McGlynn requiring much of a pay raise.

Just my thoughts on it… Good write up!

Yah, I'm worried about keeping Collins as well

IMO, Kely Jennings still is not very good and can easily be upgraded for probabally less money than he is making.

Gesham will be in his 3rd year so he should be able to start providing some veteran leadership, Cochart has done well and you can pick up pretty good tight end in the later rounds who are more cost effective than Donald Lee.

Now that you mentioned the tight ends, I forgot we also paid $1M to Bo Scaiffe, he can be released as well. YES, we found more money:)

My thoughts

Gotta go- Benson, Caldwell.
Gotta keep- Collins (we should resign him for starting tackle money and play him there. We should make Andre a guard where I feel he would be elite. If Andre doesn’t care for that situation he can leave for free agency in 2013 or franchise him depending on how he performs.
Adam Jones,Pat Sims.
Everyone else is replaceable or if we can’t find better then resign them.

Great write up, well thought out.

The only changes I would make would be to keep Johnathon Fanene, even if it costs us more, since he is such a valauble backup. I would focus hard on re-signing Sims, since he is such a domiant run stuffer, and should be a starter. I know I will catch hell for this, but I beleive that Sims is more domiant then Peko (even though I’m a huge Peko fan), and feel that we would be better off to have Peko back up Sims. Also I would cut Rivers, since Thomas Howard clearly out performs him.

Sounds good

I think you could switch the Pacman/Collins money. Pacman isn’t a spring chicken and has a troubled past so he shouldn’t cost much. Its Collins that will take the money to keep. Fanene wanted starter money this season and with his play it’s warranted. You can pay him that and start him over Johnson maybe. I’m all for letting Caldwell go but that leaves Simpson as a bigger need cause we’re not deep at wide out. The only good thing that came out of Shipley going down was we found Hawkins and Whalen to be pretty good. So Caldwell being able to play slot and WO doesn’t make him more valuable to us anymore, but we will still need to adress WO in the draft or preferably FA.

Crocker and Rivers I would keep around. There is a reason Mays doesn’t see playing time much and Sands hasn’t seen any. Rivers, well you can never have to many linebackers. He will help the camp competition and at worst special teams. These guys aren’t breaking the bank and are good insurance policies. We only have so many draft picks.

by Bigcatdaddy on Jan 5, 2012 3:25 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

I don't think Rivers would be a backup, and would demand a trade or to be cut.

Since Howard has greatly out performed him and should be cheap, I say might as well cut Rivers. To be chosen as high as he was, he has been a bust. Hopefully we address our secondary in FA or the draft. They need alot of work. I like Nelson and Crocker is decent, but if it will take our team to the next level, then I’m all for replacing them both.

Iffy on Roland

I wonder what could happen if we had a line coach change.

Is Roland too tall to be effective at offensive line? Is there a disadvantage given to shorter guys, center of gravity related? Dunno the physics on it.

Were he a defensive lineman, I could imagine him sticking them paws up on pass plays or reaching out and grabbing backs as they tried to run by, but he isn’t.

Merry Who-Dey, everybody!!

Great Post

i love it, but like other fellow Bengals fans has said, Jonathan Fanene is a valuable piece to our D-line rotation

by Touhue Cha on Jan 5, 2012 11:01 AM EST reply actions

I'd keep this real simple

There are only 2 players they absolutely have to get back or it impacts the first two rounds of the draft. Sims and Collins. All the others are either nice to have back like Lawson and Fanene or just don’t care.

by BENGALS69 on Jan 5, 2012 12:04 PM EST reply actions

Sims and Collins would be two.......

I’d really like us to re-sign. I like Fanene too, but I think Sims has more of an impact on the run defense, whereas we’ve got some others who can provide the pass rush. Collins would be great to keep and either put at RT and kick Andre inside, or some other combination. Would take care of one of our G issues come draft time. Then assuming Bolling can start next year, we’d be in good shape.

Fanene has 6 sacks this year

Paul Brown Stadium, where everyone's hopes go to die.

Always forget he has that many........

I change my vote! Sims, Collins and Fanene!

That's what I was thinking

MJ is still on his rookie contract so it wouldn’t kill us to keep both. The rotation we have/had is really what makes the D line so special. In this case not knowing who to release and resign is a good problem. Hope they all want to stay together and take what they can get to do it.

by Bigcatdaddy on Jan 5, 2012 4:45 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

Agreed about the D.......

and would like to keep Collins because he’s been here for awhile and don’t want to have to wait for a guy to develop like Bolling.

Agree on most of them.

Except Fanene, he needs to be retained. The guy is a beast in pass rushing and is very underrated.

I would also consider trying Taylor Mays out at linebacker instead of safety. With his playstyle it seems like he might be a more natural fit at OLB. His coverage isn’t that great, but he’s decent against the run. His straight line speed might make him a fearsome pass rusher as well. He’s a little small for a LB, but he hits like a freight train for his size, and could easily stuff guys bigger than him. And at 6’3" 230 lbs he’s not THAT small, he could easily put on 10-15 lbs without losing too much speed (if any). His experience at safety would make him a halfway decent pass coverage LB as well, and could probably still cover a TE in a pinch.

Just food for thought.
