I can't wait!

I’m hitting the road extra early in the morning to get some good tailgating in before the game. I’m going to find a big crowd of Texans and tell’em to put down the Lonestar and Shiner and have a big fat can of Whodey. ;-) My buddy is friends with B. Scott and I’m hoping to get to meet him before the game. Tomorrow is going to be awesome!

I know I won't be able to sleep tonight

I’ll sit up and drink beers with you on you on your couch and make fun of frogs. Er,,, sorry french people. And anyone who doesn’t understand the character it takes to be a loyal Bengals fan.

Today...

has felt very long. The excitement is reaching a huge level that I haven’t felt since…2005? The night before the Jets Playoff game didn’t feel this intense, I’m not sure why. Tomorrow will be quite a day.

That was amazing.

That was a great poem. I wish I had that creativity.

A few things

1. The Bengals have never won a road playoff game. That is simply bizarre. It sure would be nice to get one.

2. I am concerned that the Bengals approach to this game will be wrong. Marvin-ball is conservative ball. I expect them to try to run Benson even though he’s been Mr 3.9 yards and a cloud of grass, and Mr Can’t Make a 1st down on 3rd and 1. I think they should approach this game as “have fun, no pressure, we’re not expected to win this”… meaning it’s okay to gamble rather than “stick with what brought us here”. I’d rather see them try a few razzle dazzle moves: a flea flicker, a reverse on a kickoff return, a surprising fake field goal. “What brought us here” lost every single time it faced a playoff team. I’d rather they unleash Andy Dalton and do a few things they didn’t do this season. But I just don’t think Marvin Lewis has that in him.

by occams_tiger_teeth on Jan 7, 2012 12:18 AM EST reply actions

That's what makes me sad too.

If there’s a time to blow out your playbook, it’s now. If you care about this team, your job, and going farther in the playoffs, blow out the playbook and showcase every trick play, every beautiful idea, all this fancy stuff.

Dalton’s going to need to play the game of his life tomorrow. He needs to become the anti-Flacco.

Let's talk about Flukes..

We all, generally, like to believe the Bengals lost on a fluke last second drive. But what else was fluke? Was the ridiculous errant Yates pass that led to a Nelson INT a fluke? Was a Maualuga forced fumble and recovery on the goal line a fluke? Was yet another Rey forced fumble a fluke?

The Bengals made a lot of pure plays. Plays they don’t normally make, in the last Houston matchup. They went into that game thinking the season depended upon it, and this game is a playoff game. So perhaps they will play with the same intensity. But that’s a lot to rely upon.

What wasn’t a fluke was how the run game was totally shut down. If they can do that again and make a couple plays this game can be won. But it’s the “make a couple plays” part that worries me. This is more of a fundamental defense than a play making defense.

by Cry on Jan 7, 2012 12:36 AM EST reply actions

I've been thinking about that

In most of our wins we had at least one or two crazy plays. You could call them flukes or whatever and it started to worry me that maybe without those plays we aren’t half as good, but in reality it’s just football. Theirs hardly any game that doesn’t have that one crazy turning point play it’s just who is going to have it fall in their laps. If you replay every game there never going to go down the same as the first. I guess I’m just saying it’s apart of the game and it doesn’t worry me one bit cause we have just as good ofa chance as the other team. This year feels like a whole new Bengals franchise and I’m damn proud to be on board.

Just posted more about this on the overrated Benson article

but I think if not Richardson (who I really, really want to see in stripes) then David Wilson. Just watch the highlight video

Try not to watch highlights...

instead, head over to DraftBreakdown.com – click videos – and enjoy.

Watch a snap by snap analysis. That way you can see the good & bad of each player. Helps tremendously when comparing players of the same position.

Adam Jones is a #1 corner, far superior to a nickelback. The problem with the Bengals secondary is Crocker and the play of their linebackers. Under Marvin, the linebackers have historically had a whale of a time covering eligible receivers, whether tight ends, running backs or wideouts. That’s why Houston has won their last three vs. Cincinnati and why the Jets were able to do the exact same things to the Bengals in Week 17 of the 2009 season, Wild Card Weekend, and Thanksgiving 2010. That’s why the Patriots are a rough matchup for the Bengals. They won’t be able to cover Gronkowski or Woodhead.

I’ve been clamoring for Crocker to go since late 2009. He should not have been back last season. Sometimes this organization gets “Dhani Syndrome”, where they find a true pro who can follow directions but physically can’t get the job done consistently enough to justify that much playing time. He was another guy I wanted gone by late 2009. He was a major goat vs. the Jets in that Wild Card game, him and Carson’s 146 yards passing. You can see Crocker look at the sideline when he does make a play, as if to say, “see, I can still play!”. It’s pathetic. Everyone makes mistakes, but he makes the whole secondary bad. A player given that much responsibility out there can crush you if he isn’t doing his job.

Carson Palmer.
