I have read recents comments and post on Rey play as MLB. Well i have kept my mouth shut about this guy and its time i put in my 2 cents. First he has apparently no idea of what attacking downhill to the football means . He plays at 6 yards deep and hardly ever steps up on his run fit to meet a linemen or ball carrier near the LOS. Secondly When he does attack the LOS he over runs the play or turns his shoulders to the line of scrimmage making him an easy block. Which brings me to my next coaching point, once he is in a run fit (locked up with a linemen) he cannot get off a block. Finally, at what point in your carreer do you finally realize that your pursuit angles are absolutely horrific.
Now i have kept my mouth shut because i wanted to believe in this guy, knowing that he just came off of an ankle surgery and did not get alot of reps in training camp due to a knee injury. I have alot of respect for Zim and i love his style of coaching. From what i understand he is a players coach but i have to wonder what in God's name is he doing leaving this man on the field. I thought Dan Skuta did a good job last year playing for Rey when he was out with an injury. Muck IMO played well there in the Preseason. At the very least bench him for a game and see how he responds the following game with a very short leash.
Burfict on the other hand is turning into what we thought he could be but i am not sure he is ready to be MLB with all the added pressure of lining up the front 7. Now that sounds familiar. I heard alot of people weighing this option when was a rookie. I do not remember Rey having a game like Burfict had last night which was absolutely impressive. He would attack down hill, keep his outside leverage, and spill the runner to where Rey should have been. Seven weeks in maybe Burfict has a good grip on the defense and can handle the MLB position. A change needs to happen now during the bye Week. Get a guy in there stick with him and let him develope. At this point in the season i my opinion what do we have to lose.
My last point is i am tired of hearing we are a young team. Great coaches and teams find a way to win with young talent. I don't want to hear "Next year will be the Year". The season is not lost but with a tough schedule coming up we have put our backs against the wall. I still BELIEVE in my BENGALS!!
