UPDATED: I'd love to say I pulled a phenomenal reverse jinx with the timing of this post, but instead I'll just say I hope what we saw was really about them learning how to pull out a win, rather than the Chargers continuing to show they know how to lose. Now bring on the Cowboys, Who-Dey!
Last night I found myself wondering when was the last time that the Bengals came from behind to win a game when I realized it hadn't happened once this season. Then digging through the numbers today I realized that, in fact, the Bengals had not won a single game this year in which they trailed at the end of ANY quarter.
Here is the quarter by quarter breakdown of scoring for Bengals & opponents through 11 games.
| Total | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | T |
| CIN | 79 | 88 | 37 | 78 | 282 |
| Opp | 32 | 62 | 77 | 76 | 247 |
| diff | 47 | 26 | (40) | 2 | 35 |
What jumps out, obviously, is how much worse they've played in the 3rd quarter. The stunning comparison is when you look at Wins vs Losses.
| In Wins | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | T |
| CIN | 59 | 61 | 21 | 51 | 192 |
| opp | 16 | 23 | 34 | 24 | 97 |
| diff | 43 | 38 | (13) | 27 | 95 |
| In Lossess | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | T |
| CIN | 20 | 27 | 16 | 27 | 90 |
| opp | 16 | 39 | 43 | 52 | 150 |
| diff | 4 | (12) | (27) | (25) | (60) |
Although they actually hold a slight lead after 1st even in games they went on to lose, it's clear that this is a team who just is not showing the ability to come from behind at any point in the game. Whether that is play-calling or performance, we all should hope they are able to overcome their historic West Coast challenges earlier rather than later.
