Rey Maualuga Charged With Misdemeanor Assault

INDIANAPOLIS - SEPTEMBER 02: Rey Maualuga #58 of the Cincinnati Bengals walks back to the sidelines during the NFL game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on September 2 2010 in Indianapolis Indiana. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Late last night, we passed along word that Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga was being investigated for a possible assault incident at the Luxe bar and nightclub in Cincinnati. The manager of the bar claimed that Maualuga punched him in the face in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to the Associated Press, the police have concluded their investigation on the situation and are charging Maualuga with misdemeanor assault.

Police cited the 25-year-old Maualuga with the misdemeanor count on Friday after investigating allegations by a bar employee that Maualuga punched him in the face early Sunday morning. Maualuga's arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 17. No attorney was listed for him.

Maualuga also has a previous DUI arrest on his record and this situation could put him in really hot water with the league. It's possible that he could be facing a suspension.

This is not good news for the club. Though they've attempted to change their image from the NFL's bad boys, this incident and the one hanging over Jerome Simpson have the team seemingly back where they were in the mid-2000s. We'll be sure to update you more on this story as it develops.

I was willing to give him a chance despite the very average play because he’s done good and he has potential. But this just makes him way more replaceable.

Pleeeease

Make a serious effort to replace this dude if at all possible. He simply isn’t very good.

sounds like they still need to take this thing to court to hear both sides of the story.

if he is found guilty, i don’t think he will get suspend more the two games unless of course, alcohol is involved. But none of the reports say anything about him drinking.

Seriously here is what happened he is innocent!!!

Rey couldn’t shed the block by the bouncer keeping him away from the manager so NO way in hell could he have hit the manager.(see this years games as proof of his shedding ability on big linemen)

seriously, I own a 58 jersey and am throwing it away. He is by no means a top notch middle linebacker, and he can’t stay out of trouble… so I say cut our losses.

Rey

What happened to that contrite guy who was so apologetic when he had his DWI and how having a kid changed him… swore he wouldn’t be a knucklehead anymore. If he was a great player I could see giving him another chance. Not now. Trade him to Oakland.

The one positive from this

Hopefully, this will scare us off from taking a risk on Jenkins in the first round.

I got charged with the same exact thing a couple years back.

I did 2 weeks in jail and 2 years unsupervised probation. Obviously this took place in a bar but that in my opinion is not enough proof that alcohol was involved. Just because an establishment serves alcohol doesn’t mean he was drinking it while he was there. They do no kind of test for alcohol for this crime neither. I mean it’s safe to assume alcohol was involved but there is not clear cut evidence that’s the case. I don’t believe he should suspended as a repeat offender of alcohol abuse by the league because of this. I think he’ll get what Benson did.. A one game suspension at most.

lol i was expecting the guy on the 911 call to sound more panicked

but the witness at the bar said that fight wasn’t as bad as what the reports made it seem. But there was defiantly fight.

I can see a game or so suspension if he is found guilty. I don’t think they will be able to prove that he was drunk or not since he wasn’t obtained that night.

I was Told I was Crazy for the Bengals going after Vontaze Burfict in the Draft.

If you guys remember what happened to Odell Thurman, on his 2nd alcohol rated incident CASTRO aka The commish suspended him 4 games.

I listened to the guy who REY was suppose to hit and he did not go to the hospital the night of the incident and says REY just walked up and punched in the eye for no reason or warning.

Either he is lying and I guarantee most of is bullsh** or REY has some problems and needs to stay of the sauce. Cincy will have to draft a MLB because Dan Skuta did not cut it!!

thats the thing though, there not going to be able to prove without a reasonable doubt that he was drunk or not.

They may get him for assault since there were several witnesses. Now its a matter of proving if Rey was really provoked or not.

An off duty police officer was security.

Sorry I tend to believe him more than I will Rey. If he wasn’t drinking that makes it even worse in my book. That means it doesn’t take alcohol for him to get in trouble.
Guys like him and Simpson need to go. MB needs to make a stand and say NO MORE.

thats what i don't get?

your more willing to believe a guy, that pops out of no where and says Rey hit me for no reason. Lol that seems a little comical to me.

You take one side of the story and run with it.

I don’t doubt there was a fight. What I DOUBT is that Rey wasn’t provoked. I don’t condone anything the reports claimed Rey had done. But all the facts aren’t out yet. And untill we get more information on this, I think we should wait to hold any type of judgement.

Muck is a tackling/playmaking machine

If he is healthy and Rey is suspended, I’m not sure Rey gets his job back. Muck maintained his starting spot on a very good Texas defense despite the high recruits coming in. Why? Because it appears he was in on every play. Zim is extremely high on Muck and if he shows he is healthy by the time of the draft I don’t think Rey’s troubles will cause the Bengals to look at a MLB with their 1st or 2nd round picks.

Remember when Big Ben got suspended for 4 games over an “alleged” incident where he was never arrested or formally charged? Goodell doesn’t need proof. If you are a repeat offender, you get suspended. Period. BTW- Your blind defense of Maualuga is what’s making you look foolish.

by Shake n Blake on Feb 11, 2012 7:17 AM EST reply actions

I don't understand where I am being way out of line here?

please let me know what I have said that made me look foolish.

The case isn’t even closed and there is a possibility that Rey will be found innocent. In which, he will most likely not get suspended.

And its very important to determine if alcohol is involved because that will bring a bigger suspension if he is found guilty. And that will be his second strike in the substance abuse policy.

IF they can’t prove alcohol is involved and he is found guilty it will be a lesser suspension.

Rey is going into his last year of his contract anyways, if he can’t pick up his game on the field and stay away from problems, then we let him go.

But I still don’t think this case is as serious as what everyone is making it out to be. There was a fight, people get into fights all time. I hope he learned his lesson because im sure the night life isn’t worth all this.

please let me know of a player who was suspended without breaking a law or failing a drug test or a repeat "hitting a defenseless player" offender

Big Ben is the only player in history to be suspended with not being found guilty or breaking any rules. The case wasn’t even brought to trial and Ben got off the hook big time.

Big Ben is not a good example because its a totally different situation.

Don't think there was a ever was a situation like that

Outside of Ben they were all guilty. If Rey is found innocent you’ll get your second example.
