Shipley as the #2

I can't be the only Bengals fan amongst us who believes that Jordan Shipley deserves a shot to be the #2 WR, can I?

I get that he doesn't have prototypical size or speed. I doubt Shipley is athletic enough to front flip over a defender into the endzone. But I think the kid has more heart than anyone else on the football team.

I'd like to see him used like the Giants used Victor Cruz last year, outside on two wide sets and in the slot on three wide sets.

No doubt we need to find another solid WR, I just dont think he should be given the right to start over Shipley without proving he deserves it.

Technically Speaking

On the depth chart, your number two receiver is your 2nd outside man, and your 3rd receiver is your slot receiver. It’s in no way saying that the #2 is ahead of or better than the #3, just that one is an outside and one is in the slot. In terms of looks, I can almost guarantee that Shipley can lead the team in receptions as the slot receiver, especially with the threat of Gresham and Green, and hopefully a halfway decent number two. Wes Welker is a slot receiver, and he’s one of the best receivers in the league. So don’t think of Shipley being behind someone else, think of the #2 and #3 receivers as two different positions.

Exactly.

Shipley is perfect for the slot. Need someone fast and can get the jumball on the outside at #2.

Welker

may be a slot receiver but he can line up on the outside in two wide sets. Welker is their best receiver so they dont want to take him off the field

by Jason Blanton on Feb 12, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Welker is great

But how did he do lined up outside in the super bowl? One play late in the game comes to mind..

by MattLeitner on Feb 13, 2012 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

what?

he dropped one pass and that means he can’t cut it as an outside receiver?

by indesignkat on Feb 13, 2012 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

I think most people like shipley

But most also feel we need to add another wr threat on the outside.

by biggie22 on Feb 12, 2012 10:18 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Shipley's the guy who goes across the middle for those tough catches

He doesn’t have the pure speed or height to work the outside routes.

"It’s time people started realizing just how good a player Carlos Dunlap already is, and that starts with the Bengals. They gave him a season-high 58 snaps and what was the result? Carnage on the right side of the Seattle line." -Pro Football Focus

Was TJ Housh Fast or athletic?

I think we can use him like we did with him. Put him on the outside once in a while. Good route running will make up for the speed issue.

by BigJungle on Feb 12, 2012 10:58 AM EST reply actions

Housh played in the slot for the most part, though.

When we say #2, we mean the Y receiver. Shipley could very well be the #2 OPTION, but we still need a tall, fast deep threat as the “#2 receiver” on the outside.

he would get man handled off the line

Every snap. They would press him all game and pretty much take him away.

Keep him in the slot

We need him in the slot, we’ll have to find a #2 WR…i also think Whalen is on the come up to be the #4 WR, to bump Hawkins down as the #5 WR.

Agreed, we missed not having Ship in the slot this year.......

he came up big for us in the past on 3rd down conversions.

I think Whalen will be really liked when the season starts.

He played well at the end of the year when he was in the game. He’ll be getting some playing time next year. He reminds me of Shipley the way he catches the ball and runs. It’s going to be huge for us having 2 Shipley’s on the team.

Agreed, both Whalen and Hawk made some big plays to convert some big 3rd downs.

With Ship back, we’re more than covered in the slot WR department. Now about that #2 WR……….

Shipley's talents are best utilized in the slot.

He’s too small to be used on the outside as an occasional deep threat because he doesn’t have that AJ Green ability to always leap over the smaller defenders, he’s too short. Now if he develops his talents to the point where he can be used in all situations like Welker is used in New England then I would love to use him as a number two eventually. But he’s only got one full season under his belt right now so let’s see what we get out of him the next few years before we judge whether or not he can be a viable number two opposite AJ. Remember Welker earlier in his career when he played for Miami was known more for his returning skills than his receiving skills. He wasn’t really developed as an elite receiver until towards the end of his tenure in Miami right before he was signed by New England so I’d say Shipley’s off to a good start but he has a lot of developing to do still. I know he’s got the speed to be utilized as a deep threat though, he proved that when he was at Texas.

Keep him in the slot

Though move him to the outside on some plays. He could easily be the #2 option on this team though there is no way he plays outside in 3 WR sets.

why cant the bengals be so lucky

Why does it seem like they dont ever have the luck of picking up an unknown guy and having him turn out to be a star? Like a Victor Cruz or Ariann Foster. Are they just unlucky or is it player development?

by NYBengalsfan1 on Feb 12, 2012 8:13 PM EST reply actions

Housh gave us some damn good yrs

As far as comparing him to Cruz lets see how long he stays relevant. Housh got old but he lead the league or finished 2nd for a couple years in receptions.

I think Shipley works better in the slot.

Shipley doesn’t have the size to be an every down 2nd WR. I think his specialty is the the slot and on the 3rd downs. We would defiantly need to look towards the draft or free agency if we don’t resign Simpson.

As far as targets, I wouldn’t mind him being the second option after Green, but I still think we resign Jerome two like a two year deal or something like that.

Why even consider it?

I guess you could do it but it would take him out of the position that he could contribute most. As a slot he will get more looks and balls than a #2 WR. He probably wouldn’t even want to make that move. He can become one of the best slot guys in the league and when it’s all said and done it will say WR in the history books not slot or #2.

by Bigcatdaddy on Feb 14, 2012 12:57 AM EST via Android app reply actions

Like i said, I’d like to see him used in the slot in 3 wide sets but on the outside in 2.

Shipley should stick where he does the best good for the team!

He’s perfect where he is right now…………..The Slot…….ala: welker.

He just doesn’t have the size to be an every down WR on the outside.

Fixed

Size for a WR doesn’t have anything to do with how many downs he can play. He can play every down if we are always in a 3 WR set. He just doesn’t have the size to really do well on the outside.

by Luke on Feb 14, 2012 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

my point was, we can move him to the outside occasionally but not an a true number 2

where he would play almost every down on the outside. Im sure he can line up on the outside every now and then, but thats not his specialty. But we are basically agreeing
