Colts trade the Andrew Luck to the Bengals for ...

It's that time of the year for me to start imagining bizarre free agency and draft scenarios. Today I was thinking about the Luck Manning Horseshoe dilemma and I thought of a crazy scenario where Andrew Luck would end up playing for the Bengals. Before I go into detail I'd like to point out that this is just for fun.

Andrew Luck and the 1st pick of the 2012 NFL Draft have tremendous value. If Carson Palmer is worth two 1st rounders (I know, one was conditional) then what is a prospect like Andrew Luck worth? Twenty 1st's rounders?

[ Pause for laughter ]

So I started to wonder, what if Peyton drank a magical healing potion and was restored to his former greatness? What if Jim Irsay took the Colts out of rebuild-mode and flipped the switch on all-out-epic-superbowl-push-mode (aka eagles-mode)? What if they didnt need a QB at all? Could the Colts be in the market to trade their one golden box of Lucky Charms for 20 boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

Plenty of teams would approach the Colts but few would have the ammunition to get the deal done. The Cincinnati Bengals, however, made the Colts an offer they couldnt refuse.

The Indianapolis Colts have traded the 1st pick to the Cincinnati Bengals for Andy Dalton and the 17th and 21st pick, and with the 1st pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select Andrew Luck

What do you think about this move? Does it make sense for both teams? Could the Bengals fill the rest of their holes in free agency and later in the draft?

Luck is totally unproven

He could be the next Peyton Manning, or the next Ryan Leaf.

Two 1st round picks and a pro-bowl QB for an unproven prospect?
You won’t get many takers.

Now if you replace A Luck with A Rodgers or D Brees…then maybe you’ll get some more YES replies in your poll.

I hate it when Ephram uses data & facts to refute my unfounded opinions....No chocolate chip cookies for him!!!

Not if Luck intended to split his salary with me

I get that it’s for fun, but you might as well ask if we want to trade Mike ZImmer for a shiny new nickel.

tell you what

I’d trade the Bengals pick at 21 and Chris Crocker to the Steelers for Troy Polamalu.

I guess Dalton's a bust then in the team's eyes...

if they actually pull this move off lol. But utter nonsense, the Colts most certainly aren’t going to let Luck go anywhere else once they snatch him up in the draft since they appear to have quite a bit invested in him with all the Peyton Manning alienation going on right now in Indy. Plus in what universe would this be a good move for us lol? We lose a bunch of draft picks that could be used to address actual positions of need so we can land the top pick at a position that doesn’t need to be addressed at all. I know this is a what if scenario but I just can’t help but poke holes in it. If it were to actually happen I would be very angry.

If Richardson is there for the picking at 17...

hallelujah. But right now I don’t see any intangibles that Richardson doesn’t have that would keep him from being a superstar back in the NFL and as a result the odds of him falling to 17 aren’t very good. But who knows, Aaron Rodgers when he was drafted fell quite a bit in the first round. As I recall he wasn’t taken until the 24th pick that year because of criticism about his size and way he held the football in college going into that draft while Alex Smith was taken number 1. But Richardson looks like the A.J. Green of RBs coming out this year so I really don’t see him falling to 17. I guess it all depends on the teams picking ahead of us. How many of them have needs at RB?

Some say he'll fall and some say he won't

Teams that could use a RB though are…

Cleveland
Kansas CIty
Maybe the Jets…

I would hope the Jets wouldn't take him...

considering they have Shonn Greene who right now might be the only staple in that offense with Sanchez’s play as of late. I think the Jets might try and address their issues on their D-line in the first round. I don’t see them taking a RB. Kansas City, I don’t think they need a RB either considering they’ve got Jamaal Charles coming back from injury and they’ve got decent depth behind Charles in McCluster, Jones, and Battle although I don’t know if all of those guys are returning. So I think Cleveland is our biggest threat depending on if they let Hillis leave (which they probably will) and how they feel about Hardesty as the feature back there which from what I’ve heard Holmgren likes Hardesty a lot. In their case I think they want to focus on drafting more playmaking receivers for McCoy to throw to and I’m sure they’re still kicking themselves for trading out of the top ten in last year’s draft and losing out on landing Julio Jones so I could see the Browns drafting Justin Blackmon over Richardson. But who knows. Hopefully that’s the case.

Jets already drafted d-line 1st round last year

Paul Brown Stadium, where everyone's hopes go to die.

by DTFCPDX on Feb 17, 2012 1:53 AM EST up reply actions

I could see them doing it again though...

their D-line was horrible this year, definitely the weakness of their defense.

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 1:54 AM EST up reply actions

I think you're a little off

They need help pressuring the QB, but they need a pass rush specialist. Lots of people have them taking an OLB/DE typ player. Not necessarily technically “D-line”, but it might as well be being a down lineman and all.

Try not to take the above message too seriously.

by einman77 on Feb 17, 2012 3:11 AM EST up reply actions

If that's the case, they might get Upshaw from Alabama.

Paul Brown Stadium, where everyone's hopes go to die.

by DTFCPDX on Feb 17, 2012 9:23 AM EST up reply actions

I think given the choice

They would take Upshaw over Richardson in a heartbeat. I would hope they would do the same with someone like Perry too. But if Richardson was still there, I think he would be too tempting to use the pick rather than even trade down barring a silly offer. If he’s not there then there then it’s all up in the air at that point.

Try not to take the above message too seriously.

by einman77 on Feb 17, 2012 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

They had a few issues...

against the run this year as well. Their D-line all-around was below average this season as we all know their secondary is the strength of their defense. But we all know pure run-stoppers are very difficult to find in the draft and you don’t usually go for them in the first round so yes I would think they might go for a pass-rusher hybrid LB/DE. Hopefully they do cause I don’t see how them drafting Richardson would make any sense at all. They’re fairly solid at RB at the moment assuming LT is coming back to back up Greene.

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Jets drafted Muhammed Wilkerson

Paul Brown Stadium, where everyone's hopes go to die.

by DTFCPDX on Feb 17, 2012 1:54 AM EST up reply actions

The Jets will NOT take TR

They have dire need for a RT and 2 safeties. Their QB hasn’t lived up to expectation at all, but some blame the former OC. The D has missing pieces as well. Shonn Greene is their best and most reliable weapon on offense. The last thing they need is a RB, aside from maybe CB.

by indesignkat on Feb 17, 2012 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong...

but aren’t the Jets pretty set at safety with Jim Leonhard and Eric Smith back there although from what I understand Leonhard is currently a FA. Speaking of which, considering our own needs at safety I’ve been wondering why Leonhard’s name hasn’t come up at all in FA talk. I would absolutely love it if we brought in Jim Leonhard.

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

I've read some stories talking about how

the Jets weren’t happy with the play Leonhard and Smith this past season. And there are reports that Leonhard might be a low priority signing for the Jets. Leonhard tore his right patellar tendon in December and could start 2012 on the PUP list.

by Oregonbengalsfan on Feb 17, 2012 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

Well with Smith idk what the deal is...

but I know for a fact that their defense definitely started to decline last season once Leonhard got hurt. His play might have declined a little bit statistically for them last year but you can’t deny he wasn’t an important player for them, he was basically the QB of their for many years and their pass D did start to decline once his absence took effect, including Revis’s play. So if they aren’t prioritizing bringing back Leonhard I think we should absolutely take a shot at him, provided he heals in time for the start of the regular season.

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

*QB of their defense

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I think it was probably more of them not being happy

with the combination. Leonhard has been a very important part of their defense for years.

by Oregonbengalsfan on Feb 17, 2012 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

Leonhard was an overachiever who played well until he got hurt

He wasn’t elite, he was surprisingly good for his size. He wasn’t drafted, he wasn’t even offered a scholarship in college. He’s a guy that plays a lot harder and better than you’d ever expect just looking at him, but he’s still not elite. He’s just surprisingly good. Well, he was before he broke his leg.

Hoping he comes back strong is a big risk. And Smith sucked.

by indesignkat on Feb 17, 2012 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

Leonhard most certainly would be an upgrade from Crocker.

I’d say bring him in but address safety in the draft as well. We’d likely be able to get him for cheap too, which appeals to MB. I’d say let’s see what we can get out of him for a year or two. He plays SS so he could address an area of need for us.

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

If anything he could be another Kevin Kaesviharn-type player...

for us. And I liked Kaesviharn a lot, I just didn’t like the way he was utilized by Bresnahan. I imagine Kaesviharn could have been even better for us if he had gotten the chance to play under Zimmer as opposed to Bresnahan.

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

agree

Rather take my chance’s with a guy like Jason Allen
Even though i respect the heart, and hard nosed play of Leonhard
Would rather have a under achiever with a huge upside,as to have a over achiever coming off
a injury.

I disagree...

we have too many underachievers on this team as it is, the ultimate one being Rey of course. The more guys on this team that play beyond their potential, the better. I mean look at Dalton. Many might say he overachieved this year and I don’t see any of us complaining about that. We need more guys like that.

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

IMO

Dalton did what the coaching staff thought he could before they drafted him
Really dont see anyone complaining, but the guy who says our team is full of underachiever’s

I'm not complaining about Dalton...

by any means. I’ve supported him since week 1. I don’t want to bring in more underachieving players, that’s what I’m worried about I think we’ve seen enough of that with guys like Rey and Rivers. Underachievers with huge upside are still underachievers if they refuse to perform at a high level.

Those guys were draft picks

Nelson,Howard type of guys are what i’m talking about

actually I was defending my statement that the Jets need 2 safeties

But I’d like to have Leonhard on the Bengals. Assuming he comes back strong from his injury. He’s broken his tibula and patella now, if I’m not mistaken.

I'm not saying Leonhard wouldnt be a upgrade from our current roster

I would think...

Seattle would do everything in their power to bring Lynch back before drafting Richardson. Lynch is basically Seattle’s franchise player right now and Seattle has more issues at QB than RB.

by Jason Blanton on Feb 16, 2012 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

Agree with you on Carr no question...

although Cortland Finnegan is my number one choice for free agent corners. As for Bush, I really see no reason to write him off as I thought he was very impressive when he became the feature back for the Raiders this year when McFadden went down. He’s big, difficult to tackle, can give you a large number of carries per game, and he doesn’t fumble very often which is a huge plus. The one improvement I want to see in our offense next season is on third down, especially third and short where we tended to stall a lot this year (thank you for those frustrating moments Ced). Bush can help us tremendously in that area because of his size and his ability to push the pile. The only deterrent to bringing him in would be whether or not we finally decide to reshape our offense into this West Coast style that Gruden is “supposedly” planning on installing because Bush isn’t really a WCO style back. However, our offense still looked like the ultra-conservative, play-for-field-position-not-for-points, style that Brat ran for so many years this season so I have reason to believe that we might be a year or two away from becoming a full-blown West Coast Offense.

In my mind Dalton is quasi 1st rounder… not to mention a playoff caliber QB. Why would we give up potentially 3 1st rounders for a guy that hasn’t played a down in the NFL?

Luck

Only watched a little bit on him but he is really good. Best part of his game is how he always puts his team in the best play similar to Peyton. Has all the power to make play calls and see a better run option then pass so goes with it. Would really need to study up if this was an option which it is not.

Dalton is proven,and our guy

I wouldnt trade Dalton for a healthy Peyton Manning at this point,AD may not be that guy,but he is our guy

You also think OCHO is going to have a breakout season in NE next year,so lets just say the Bengals are going to be ok
with or without Peyton Manning.

You'd trade away your guy who took your team to the playoffs in his rookie season

Who could be a good playoff quarterback for your team for the next 10+ years potentially, and trade him away for a guy who maybe MAYBE has 3 or 4 years left in the league?

by Luke on Feb 17, 2012 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

I’d say Dalton’s performance in the Pro Bowl as well is a perfect example of how he can hang with the NFL’s elite although he might have been one of the few players actually making an effort in that game. But the guy has a strong desire to win and has openly expressed his desire to have more control over this team in the years to come as opposed to a certain former franchise QB we had a year ago who was only expressing his desire to be traded. We have nothing to complain about with Dalton, unless you want to be unreasonable and use the playoff performance against the Texans as a reason to write him off as a bust.

by dstacify on Feb 17, 2012 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

I've read CincyJungle for some time

And I’ve seen every ridiculous “stark raving fan” irrational comment people have made. Some of it so bad you wonder if the person is vaguely insane, seriously on drugs or just trolling for effect.

That said, this is, by far, the most ridiculous concept I’ve ever seen forwarded on this site by anyone. And nothing else even comes close.

Dalton wins because he doesn’t believe that the Bengals have to lose. He’s never lost regularly at any level. He doesn’t buy into the notion that the Bengals are supposed to lose.

And all he did was come into training camp after only having two or three hours with coaches after the draft before he was locked out. He started throwing to a receiving corps he’d barely met. And he started winning, and should have been rookie of the year, since the bulk of Newton’s gaudy numbers came after the Panthers were way down and teams started going prevent defense.

No rookie QB in history has come in and done as much under as adverse a set of circumstances.

If this happened, if this trade took place, it would go down as the single worst draft day decision in the history of organized sport. Worse than Ditka betting the farm on Ricky Williams, worse than Oakland drafting JaMarcus Russell, and, though not “draft day” exactly, worse than Hue Jackson giving us potentially two first round picks for a washed up quitter of a QB with a bad elbow and his best games four years behind him.

The upsides of Luck in three years vs where Dalton is going to be are very similar. The Bengals gain NOTHING in this, lose a proven guy they know to obtain a player they don’t, and have to spend two first round picks (taking them out of the potential market for Richardson, DeCastro, Glenn, etc, people who would come in and make the team demonstrably better far more likely than Luck) as the cost of gaining nothing.

Seriously, man, not only no, but HELL no.

i was hoping the Bengals would draft AD this time last year. i’m obviously very happy with how well he has performed and I myself wouldnt make this trade. It was designed to get people to think creatively about over the top draft / trade scenarios.

I know this is just for fun but this is a scenario I thought of right after the carson palmer trade. The bottum line is I would do this in a heartbeat. Why? Because if luck is what most everybody thinks he is that we would win a superbowl. I don’t know yet if Dalton will ever be able to win one. I don’t care about playoff appearances I want a ring!!
