Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

Could the 2012 draft & free agency period be the time for a certain Ohio football franchise to rise to glory? The beginning of a decade of dominance?

I had a scary thought while commenting on another thread. What if the Browns get RGIII with their 4th pick (possibly trading up 2 spots, as walterfootball's venerable mock currently shows, see link), and then with their second 1st round pick (remember that? at 22?) I go away from Walter's for a bit. The Chiefs have taken Devon Still, since they take a DL almost every year in the first, and the Seahawks have already re-signed Marshawn. That leaves the Bengals faithful pre-emptively high-fiving each other and making notes to buy Trent Richardson jerseys as soon as they become available, but then the Browns trade with the Jets to move up to 16 and snag Trent Richardson from our drooling maw.

Bad so far? Just wait.

Next they sign Stevie Johnson & Reggie Wayne in FA, then pick up one Anthony Collins *cry*, and suddenly they've got what could be the most dominant o-line in the league, arguably the top RB prospect since AP, and arguably the most dynamic QB prospect in ever. A guy with a cannon arm, 4.4 speed, and, wait for it.. intelligence. The league hasn't seen that before. Plus a rock solid veteran and a fiery young star to throw to.

I thought of that, then had to do laundry. Quickly.

I'm not worried

This would take the Browns changing from a “trade down” philosophy (because they need to replace nearly HALF their roster, after all) to a “throw EVERYTHING on one (OK, two) roll(s) of the dice” philosophy. Sure if both players pan out they make a huge improvement in the team… but if even one busts, or even isn’t a complete superstar, they look like fools.

Worse yet (for them), in order to trade from 4 to 2 while NOT using their second first rounder, they’d have to give up something like 2/3rds or even 3/4ths their draft this year (or next year’s first, or both).

Then to move from 22 to 16, they’d have to use almost all the rest of their current year’s draft, and/or again trade away future picks.

RGIII and Richardson would be a good haul for them, but at most they’d be left with two more mid-round picks this year and maybe a 7th as well. Probably a 4th and a 6th or something like that. That cost is too high for such a conservative guy as Holmgren. And that’s even BEFORE he had so much fun fleecing the hell out of the foulclowns last year and laughing his way to the bank.
