Open Thread: To Trade Or Not To Trade

We've reported on a ton of different mock drafts, some of which have the Bengals selecting a running back and cornerback, a safety and cornerback, offensive and defensive linemen and other combinations of players. What we haven't seen is a mock draft in which the Bengals give up one of their two first-round picks to move up or possibly move back in the draft.

If it were up to you, would you trade away a first-round pick to move up or back and if so, who would you move up to get or what would you want in exchange to move back?

If DeCastro or Richardson aren't on the board at 17...

I’d trade down to the first half of the 2nd round to get Doug Martin with that pick. With the 21st pick I’d take Konz or Glenn. We can easily get either a 1st round pick for next year or several high picks in this draft with a trade like that.

What do you do when there's no way out? Find a way to get deeper in it.

if its a good value trade

someone offers us their 2013 1st round pick + their 2012 2nd round pick for our #21st pick in 2012. how could you say no?

because

Because thats TERRIBLE value. All we would get out of our first round pick would be a second round pick.

You guys are WAY undervaluing first round picks. Your idea basically just pushes our 21st pick back a year and get us a second rounder this year? If Someone moves up into the first for our pick it needs to be AT LEAST 2 first round picks.

the 21st pick on round 1 is worth 800 points on the sliding draft scale.

the 32nd pick is worth 590 points, the 64th pick (32nd pick of round 2) is worth 270.

in a worse case scenario of trading to a team that finishes with the most wins, you will still get an added value of 60 points in that trade. if you happen to make the same trade to a team that finishes with the 25 picks? you get gain 250 points of value.

lets look at a situation that would help the bengals. the bengals trade for their 21st pick (800 value) for the ability to draft at #42 (round 2, pick 10. value of 480) and a 2013 1st round (worse case equals 590 points – best case equals 3000). at the least the team gained 270 points. at the most, 2790 points in value.

what are some examples of trades from last season’s draft using the value charts? all of them.

stuff like saints trading into the 1st for a 1st + 2nd is common.

Really Depends

Im a Fan of Trading Down and Acquiring more picks in 2013 and as well as in 2012

But if DeCastro Falls into the 17 slot, we get him in a heartbeat, and we get Janoris Jenkins with the 21 pick if hes still there, if not then we can trade down and acquire some more picks like trading with the Colts, since they have many needs they need a Center and a SS as well has DB’s

Round 1: David DeCastro OG Stanford

Trade 1st+4th to Colts for 2nd+3rd+2013 2nd round

Round 2: Janoris Jenkins DB North Alabama

Round 2: Brandon Thompson DT Clemson

Round 3:(From Colts) Trumaine Johnson DB Montana

Trade 3rd round+5th(NE) round+2013 future 4th+7th round to Redkins for 3rd round+ 2 4th round picks

Round 3: Isaiah Pead RB Cincinnati

Round 4: (From Washington)Michael James-Johnson LB Nevada

Round 4: (From Oak-Washington)DeQuan Menzie DB Alabama

Trade 4th round pick to Buccaneers for 2013 3rd+4th round picks

Round 5: Philip Blake C Baylor

Round 6: Asa “Ace” Jackson DB Cal Poly

Round 7: Christian Thompson FS South Carolina State

I like round 3 down a lot....

don’t know much about the DT from Clemson…. but DeCastro perfect…. JJ I’m still iffy on … If Gilmore were there Id probably go Gilmore.

AD to AJ = TD!!

Would prefer not to trade

If I did, it would be in the 2nd round when the price isn’t nearly as steep to move up and make sure we get Doug Martin.

Build for the future

If our need isn’t there then trade. Many quality players have been taken in the later rounds. It wouldn’t kill us to make a trade.

Yeah, I know what running back your referring too.

Maybe decastro

Our first and 4th round and a high pick next year. Other then that i wouldnt trade

by njbengalstat on Feb 2, 2012 1:58 PM EST reply actions

As the draft board looks today, NO

since I’d want a second round pick in the top 10 plus their first rounder and no team behind us at #17 currently has a top 10 pick in the second round.

Until the situation changes, I’m standing pat.

No Trades

We’re sitting in a pretty good spot considering valuable picks for economic value. Higher up we spend more for each slot upward and picks below us start to diminish in quality somewhat. Now having said that if someone offers us a really stupid CarsonPalmer-esk type deal then go for it. But no one will.

RE:

That’s how I feel about the first round—just stand pat with two picks, someone will unexpectedly fall. They always do.

I wouldn’t mind trading up in rounds 2 and/or 3 though. Running backs and wide receivers will start to go fast in those rounds.

+1 sitting pretty

The only way I’d consider a trade is trading down just into the top of the 2nd to get Martin and another pick at the top of the 4th. Or just like you said some dumb Palmer type trade that you just can’t say no to. Sitting pretty, that’s exactly where we are.

by Bigcatdaddy on Feb 2, 2012 3:40 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

Typically

A team will trade up if they are 1 elite player from becoming an elite team. Teams trade down when they are either set and looking to build depth, or are re-building and need as many starters as they can get.

And then there are the Bengals, who never move up or down, ever.

Depends

If we can fill some holes in free agency, then maybe trade. If we don’t i would like to keep the picks. Need to address the o-line ,running back and corner positions early if we don’t fill any of those needs in free agency.

I've put my trade proposal in a fanpost

“Have we learned anything from the Carson Palmer experience”

by biggie22 on Feb 2, 2012 2:51 PM EST reply actions

I would trade down with 17 pick if either

Richardson, Decastro or Floyd did not fall to them. You try to acquire picks in the top 1/3 of 2nd and 3rd rounds to be in better position to draft Doug Martin and possibly a quality guard without using a 1. Teams who need QB like Cle, Mia, Sea, may want to get back in round 1 to get Tannehill.

Second round wage scale

Does the rookie wage scale continue into the second round? I ask because I looked a bit and could only find details on the first round. If it doesn’t, could that mean it would be harder to sign a 33rd pick than a 32nd since the 32nd pick salary is set while the 33rd isn’t and might hold out? This could be something to think about when considering the option of trading back a few spots. Would you rather pay a little more to be sure your guys are on the field for spring sessions or save a few bucks to not “stretch” for a late first rounder who you could get in the early 2nd?

If DeCastro is still on the board at 12

A trade would cost us getting 12,43 & Pats5th for 17 & 21 leavinfg us 2 2nd roud picks for RB & CB

by messjunk on Feb 2, 2012 4:33 PM EST reply actions

There is no way.....

That there aren’t two guys there in the first round that are a) rated highly, and b) fill a position of need for us (CB/S/OL/RB). No chance.

We need to add top end talent, not trade back and get more lesser talent.

by Stanley1 on Feb 2, 2012 4:49 PM EST reply actions

+1

i think we are sitting good where we are at.

How ever, I would consider trading that 2nd rnd/ 1st round pick from the raiders if that means we can another first round talent in the second.

The way I feel before free agency is we need to do what ever it takes to get decastro then get the best RB available in the 2nd round. Our offense needs way more help than of D. give our DBs another year with a new coach to prove them selves.
