It has been reported that the Indianapolis Colts are shopping Freeney. A lot of the focus on CincyJungle has been at the running back, cornerback and offensive guard position; however, with Dunlap's injury history, MJ not reaching his potential, Geathers falling off, and Rucker and Fanene being FA's, the Bengals pass rush is sorely in need of a DE. Freeney is arguably one of the top 5 pass rushing defensive ends in the league and he has made Mathis a super star by eating up the double team on the outside. While we're talking about FA's and possible trades for the Bengals, I think it only makes sense to pursue Freeney.
At this point I would be willing to give up the 21st pick in the 1st round for Freeney and my guess is, with the Colts youth movement, they may be willing to accept such a deal (we may have to throw in a later round pick, which I am also good with). That still allows the Bengals a chance to select TR if he falls, Castro or a top CB with the 17th pick. Putting him on the D line immediately upgrades the pass rush and immediately makes the secondary better due to the increased pressure. The Bengals don't have salary cap issues so his contract shouldn't be a concern.
Freeney is a proven NFL Pro-Bowl player. You can't say that for anyone the Bengals may draft in the 1st round, so isn't that pick worth more going toward Freeney than an unknown? Just my thoughts. What does everyone else think?
