The New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals are both among the most safety-deprived teams in the NFL, and both are courting the services of Reggie Nelson, who has started at free safety for the Bengals for the past 1.5 seasons. Nelson enjoyed a bit of a breakout year in 2011, and now he is one of the most sought free agent safeties in the league, though the safety market has been a bit quiet over the past few days.LaRon Landry is one of the best free agent strong safeties this year, and though a signing of Landry to the Jets wouldn't eliminate the possibility of Reggie Nelson signing there, it would certainly diminish that likelihood.
Landry would actually be a very good fit for the Jets and Rex Ryan's aggressive defense. Landry is an athletic freak (have you seen those pictures that went viral a few weeks ago?), but he is even more well-known for his tendency to get injured. Landry only played 8 games last season, and would definitely be a risky signing.
The Bengals have not had any reported interest in LaRon Landry, but they could still choose to pursue him in the future, and Landry's landing spot will certainly affect where Reggie Nelson signs.
Reggie Nelson's visit to the Jets is today, hopefully he leaves New York City without a contract, because I'd much rather have Nelson on the Bengals than Landry.
