Free Agent Guards

Hey guys! I've followed the site for a while now and finally decided to sign up so I could share some of my own opinions. The first of which being that the free agent offensive guard class this year is deeper than just Carl Nicks, Benn Grubbs and Evan Mathis. As great as it would be to land one of these players, we can't give up on the Bengal's offseason if it doesn't happen. Below are some other (IMO slightly more realistic) free agents that we should consider bringing in to compete for one of our starting guard spots (Hopefully the other spot can be addressed in the draft).

1.) Mike Brisiel - Houston Texans Height: 6-5 Weight: 300 Age: 28 Experience: 4th season

Brisiel is second only to Carl Nicks on my wishlist (IMO he is extremely underrated and I'm just not that high on Ben Grubbs and the kind of money he will command). This guy was a huge part of the Texans playoff push during the past season. He started the first 13 games of the season before he broke his leg in the Texans' regular season match up with us. Even with the broken leg he FINISHED THE GAME! (And I thought Bobbie Williams was tough just for walking off the field with a broken leg). He went on to sit out the three final games of the regular season (all of which were loses) before returning to start both playoff games and help pave the way for Arian Foster to run all over us.

Why he's worth it:

He is that though, blue collar type of hard worker (kind of like Justin Smith). The best way to judge whether Brisiel is worth our attention is to see if the Texans want him back, and they do. They just have quite a few other big name free agents that the want to address first (with Arian Foster just signing this means primarily Mario Williams & Chris Meyers are their focus). This gives us the opportunity to sneak in and steal him from them (maybe a little payback for JJoe?)

2.) Dan Connolly - New England Patriots Height: 6-4 Weight: 313 Age: 29 Experience: 6th season

He was the Patriots starting center in the Super Bowl this year, but he is primarily a guard who moved to center due to injury. This past season he started 11 games during the regular season and all three playoff games for the Patriots. You might also recognize him from his days as a kick returner (He holds the NFL record for the longest kickoff return by an offensive lineman - watch out Brandon Tate!)

Why he's worth it:

He's versatile and playoff tested. Much like the Texans with Brisiel, the Patriots would like to bring Connolly back. To me this is the best indicator of a free agents value.

3a.) Jacob Bell - Saint Louis Rams Height: 6-5 Weight: 304 Age: 31 Experience: 8th season

This guys more of a gamble. He's on the outs in Saint Louis (which can't be a good sign if a team with the second pick in the draft doesn't want you), but hear me out. Saint Louis wants maulers to play their guard spots and open running lanes while Bell is more of a pass protector. He was a hot commodity when he hit the open market four years ago coming over from the Titans, but he should come pretty cheap now.

Why he's worth it:

Even though he's not the run blocking monster of a guard we would like to have, I think he's an upgrade over Livings. And any lineman that can help keep Dalton upright in the pocket is worth at least bringing in for depth/competition (plus he's a local product having played his college ball at Miami of Ohio).

3b.) Montrae Holland - Dallas Cowboys Height: 6-2 Weight: 340 Age: 31 Experience: 9th season

Holland is tied here with Bell because they both are gambles and, ultimately, they both would just be temporary stop gaps.He started 10 games for the Cowboys last season and is a lot more injury prone than I would like, but if he can stay healthy he's proven to be an effective guard.

Why he's worth it:

Holland was the second best offensive lineman on the cowboys roster last season next to Tyron Smith, so I think he's worth a shot. Again, just got to watch out for the injury bug.

Unfortunately, this list is shorter than intended because Jeremy Zuttah & Will Montgomery both resigned with their respective teams. Anyway, this post is just for those of you that are on the "Carl Nicks/Ben Grubbs or bust" bandwagons. Even if we miss out on the top tier guards in this free agent class, there is still talent to be had.

Can't wait for the draft in April! Thanks for reading! Who Dey!
