.
Looking at their size, speed, strength from their combine #’s they are very, very similar.

Martin is a little shorter, but otherwise they are pretty much the same guy at the combine.
They each put up 28 reps.
Leonard was a little faster at 4.52 vs. 4.55
Leonard had a better broad jump by 2” while Martin had a better vertical by 1.5”
Their 20 yard shuttle and 3-cone drill were within 0.10 seconds of each other.
They are each 4th year seniors.
Looking at their college #’s, Martin had 700 more rushing yards but Leonard had 1,000 more receiving yards.
Martin had a better ypc of 5.6 vs. 4.1, and twice topped 1,200 yards rushing whereas Leonard was in the 700~900 range his first 3 seasons before Ray Rice took over.
.
Although 4 factors to consider regarding their college #’s:
+Leonard was used as a FB and got more short-yardage carries against stacked defensive fronts thus lowering his ypc.
+Martin went against some of the worst rush defenses in the country on a weekly basis in the Mt West thus increasing his ypc.
+Leonard had to split time with Ray Rice at Rutgers for his final 2 seasons which seriously lowering his totals
+Martin had a much better team (O-Line and QB) to open up huge running lanes for him which Rutgers didn’t give Leonard thus increasing Martin’s ypc
.
+Neither Martin nor Leonard are very shifty, elusive, or fast for an NFL-calibre running back.
+Their weight & combine measurables were very similar.
+They each have the same power & strength, although Martin’s comes in a more compact form.
+Leonard is a better receiver.
+Both were given early-mid round 2 post-combine grades leading up to their drafts (Although Martin has been jumping up since the combine, but this is due to a weak RB class with only 1 true elite workhorse back in the 2012 class)
.
I'll admit that I don't see Doug Martin as much of an upgrade over Brian Leonard and certainly not worth a reach with a 1st round pick. Granted they are different style runners, but Martin doesn't seem to do much of anything on tape much better than Leonard or measure better than Leonard, so i don't see him as an upgrade over Leonard worthy of using a top-20 pick.
Poll
I do realize that Doug Martin is the flavor of the week, and most people prefer new Kool-Aid over older Kool-Aid. But be that as it may....who is the better RB for the Bengals?
Doug Martin – no comparison. We desperately need to draft Martin in round 1 (16 votes)
Doug Martin – I think Martin > Leonard, but no way I use a 1st round pick for him (34 votes)
Brian Leonard – don’t waste a 1st round pick to reach for something we’ve more or less got already (27 votes)
Brian Leonard – Brian is better than Doug, but just never gets a chance to show it :-( (6 votes)
Neither – sell the farm for Trent Richardson (9 votes)
Um, I like oreo cookies (with milk of course) (5 votes)
