Marvin Lewis And The Bengals Haven't Spoken About A Contract Extension "In A While"

Months preceding his eventual two-year extension in 2011, the Cincinnati Bengals front office worked hard to get head coach Marvin Lewis signed to an extension. It wasn't until after the team's disastrous four-win season that reported demands surfaced, ranging from control over his coaching staff, increased scouting department to possibly an indoor practice facility.

In truth all of the supposed demands were conjectured from various sources, though much had happened since to validate some. Marvin Lewis successfully replaced long-term offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski with Jay Gruden, the scouting department welcomed at least one new hire and other changes have happened and spotty inquiries regarding an eventual indoor practice facility (though nothing has really come to fruition on that front).

Now Marvin Lewis is entering the final season of a two-year deal that many suspected was signed simply because the head coach lacked available options that year. When asked on Thursday if he expected a contract extension before training camp, Lewis said, "I don't know the answer to that." Then asked if there has been any contract discussions, Lewis offered, "Not in a while."

Entering his 10th season as the Bengals head coach, Lewis has amassed a 69-74-1 regular season record, two AFC North Championships but no wins during three postseason appearances.
