Andy Dalton vs. Carson Palmer. Who had the better first year?

COLLEGE:

Carson Palmer played 5 seasons at USC (injury his 2nd season)

Until his senior season, he never really showed much that would make you think he was a great QB.

As a sophomore & junior he threw for 29 TD’s and 30 INT’s

As a 5th year senior he had 33 TD’s to only 10 int’s, and 3,942 yards.

.

Andy Dalton

Was a 4-year starter at TCU who got better each season.

As a true freshman, he threw 10 TD’s to 11 INT’s

In his final 3 seasons he threw 61 TD’s to only 19 Int’s.

(It should be noted that Dalton played in the Mountain West, best known for Boise State and a bunch of cupcakes)

FIRST NFL SEASON

.

Palmer was the #1 overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft, viewed as a having a big arm, soft touch, and an ability to make all the throws. His on-field decision making was questionable with a history of INT’s and his leadership (both on & off the field) was lacking, but he was seen as a potential franchise QB type.

.

He was brought into a team that already had a solid offense, and was provided a year to sit behind Jon Kitna and learn the offense. He was set up in a veteran offensive system that was more poised to help him succeed:

+Palmer was surrounded by a pro-bowl RB Rudi Johnson who cranked out 1,454 yards and 12 TD’s

+ Palmer had good veteran WR’s in Chad Johnson & TJ who were entering their 4th seasons

+ Palmer had L Jones, E Stenibach, R Braham, B Williams & W Anderson blocking for him

.

Dalton was the #35 overall pick and 5th QB selected in the 2011 NFL draft. He was viewed as an accurate, smart QB who lacked arm strength, and who would be a west-coast field-general more than a game-changing deep passer.

.

Dalton was thrown into a new offense with a very limited training camp and no pre-camp OTA’s. He was also a year younger and didn’t get a year to sit on the bench and learn like Palmer had. Dalton was given a less potent offensive cast to work with:

+Dalton had a fumbling plodding RB Cedric Benson who barely topped 1000 yards with 6 TD’s

+Dalton had a rookie WR in AJ Green and an inconsistent J Simpson as his top targets

+Dalton actually had a TE, but the TE’s were too busy blocking to do much receiving

+Dalton had A Whitworth, A Smith, and K Cook blocking for him with Nate the Living turnstile and a rotation of right guards standing around in front of him.

.

Palmer had slightly more yards per game (223 vs. 212 )

Palmer had a slightly better TD % (4.2 vs 3.9)

Palmer had a better completion % (60.9 vs. 58.1)

Dalton had a much better INT % (2.5 vs. 4.2)

Dalton had a better QB rating (80.4 vs. 77.3)

Dalton had a better record (9-7 vs. 6-7)

.

Each had 2x 300 yard passing games

Dalton had 5x games of 250 yards while Palmer only had 3

Dalton had 6 multi-TD games and 5 multi-INT games, while Palmer had 5 and 4 respectively.
