Bengals 2010 to 2011 to 2012...improving?

In 2010 the Bengals had a horrible season.

From 2010 to 2011 the Bengals made the following changes regarding who their majority starters were:

QB – Replaced a regressing, INT producing, immobile Palmer with a younger, more mobile, better leading, less INT prone Andy Dalton. UPGRADE

.

FB – The Bengals didn’t have a FB in 2010, instead rolling with extra TE’s. In 2011 they actually introduced a fullback into their offense. EVEN

.

WR – Gone were TO and Chad 85, replaced with AJ Green and Jerome Simpson. The productive, attention grabbing divas were replaced with inexperienced kids. It worked. AJ Green made it to the pro-bowl, finishing with one of the top 10 rookie WR seasons ever, while Simpson was up & down. If nothing else, the team chemistry was better. UPDGRADE.

.

RG – Bobbie Williams missed time and was replaced by the manhandled Boling & McGlynn for part of the season. DOWNGRADE.

.

RT – Andre “moobs” Smith finally decided to get in shape (somewhat) which resulted in a full season of dominance, replacing the underperforming Dennis Roland. UPGRADE

.

DT – Geno Atkins saw an increase in playing time and was an UPGRADE

.

LB – Rivers & Jones were replaced by Lawson & Howard, and Maualuga moved into the middle. UPGRADE

.

CB – Johnathan Joseph left for more $ in Houston, which prompted the signing of Clements, who was decent, but didn’t have the pro-bowl season of Joseph. DOWNGRADE

.

S – Reggie Nelson had a great 2011 season, which was an improvement over an aging Roy Williams. UPGRADE

.

Overall, the lineup from 2010 to 2011 was UPGRADED. And the result was a playoff season.

So how has the Bengals’ lineup changed from 2010 to 2011? Is it about the same? Is it improved? Is it worse?

I’m making some guesses at who the majority starters will be in 2012. But with these assumptions...

.

RB – Gone is Benson and his 3-yards and a cloud of dust average, and his fumbly hands that can’t catch out of the backfield. Replacing him isn’t exactly a stud like Jonathan Stewart, but a sure handed BJGE who is a little better at hitting the holes & catching the football. Also B Scott & B Leonard should be getting more chances to show off what they can do. UPGRADE

.

WR – Jerome Simpson finally started in 2011 after several years on the bench. He flashed some greatness and a lot of nothing from week to week. Caldwell was an experienced, yet unspectacular WR who is also gone. Replacing them are a healthy Shipley, rookies Sanu & Jones, a former UDFA Binns, and a return man in Tate. Shipley is an upgrade, but the jury is still out on whether the inexperienced others can replace Simpson & Caldwell. EVEN

.

LG – Wharton replaces Nate Livings. UPGRADE.

.

RG –Bobbie Williams is good, but Zeitler is hopefully better. Zeitler is a huge upgrade over any of the RG’s currently on the roster. Since Zeitler was a 1st round pick, I’m going to assume he’s better than Williams’ 2011 season. UPGRADE.

.

RDE – I’m assuming Dunlap finally gets significant snaps, and replaces the pash-rush-less Geathers. If that is so, then I’ve got to assume this position is UPGRADE.

.

CB – It’s hard to say. Hall should be back at some point, as should Dre. Allen & Newman were added, possibly to replace Clements. Ghee may finally get time on the field too. It’s hard to tell at this point, but the additions of Dre, Allen & Newman could make this an UPGRADE.

.

S – Chris Crocker was a mediocre safety. Mays has lots of potential and hopefully some ability. Iloka or one of the extra CB’s could find themselves in this spot at some point. Until they do something it’s hard to say if Mays or Iloka are any better than Crocker. EVEN

.

I don’t really see any downgrades on the team going from 2011 to 2012. The roster seems to be filled with upgrades, retentions, and changes that are even (not downgrades). It seems that the team has upgraded themselves to be a better team in 2012 than they were in 2011.
