EA Sports has released the top ten receiver/tight end ratings for the newest Madden game. The newest ratings contain seven receivers and three tight ends. The highest rated of the group is Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, with a 99 overall rating."Megatron" is the cover boy for the Madden game this season. Is the Madden Curse real? This may be our best chance to find out. If Johnson struggles or gets hurt this season, even more chatter will pick up about the curse.
Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is rated number two on the list of receivers/tight ends, with a rating of 97. Gronkowski's rating ties him with Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson for the second highest rating. Tight ends Vernon Davis and Jimmy Graham follow in the list with a rating of 95. Receivers Wes Welker and Steve Smith (Panthers) also received 95 ratings. I was somewhat surprised to see Davis rated so high. He had a great postseason last year, but Jimmy Graham should have a higher rating, right? Perhaps the blocking ability that Davis possesses allowed his rating to go even higher. Rounding out the top ten were Roddy White and Hakeem Nicks, with overall ratings of 94.
There are some arguments to be made on this top ten list, but it seems fairly accurate overall. You may have noticed that second year receiver A.J. Green did not make the top ten list. It could be argued that Green should be on the list over the likes of Nicks and White. I would take Green over both of them. But Green will only be entering his second season and he needs to produce big numbers this season and stay healthy. When it comes to talent, there is no doubt that Green deserves a top ten rating. But just be patient Cincinnati--many Bengal fans, myself included, expect Green to make the top ten list for next years version of the Madden franchise.
