Now that we've flashed the updated roster lock file and set that out of the way, we can start the journey plugging the pieces to generate our projected 53-man roster. As it stands right now we have 21 players on offense, 20 players on defense and three on special teams, giving us a total of 44. Leaving nine remaining. Let's quickly knock one out.
NO. 45: Offensive Lineman Trevor Robinson
Before pausing with a "hey, wait a minute", Robinson, the self-proclaimed eighth-round pick, was already one of our bubble-locks (a term I just made up on the spot); a player we had figured to seal as a lock, but near the end of our projection. It's not enough that Marvin Lewis blows his party whistler and Paul Alexander shouts I'm a Golden God on the roof of a high school party, they're taking Robinson's 40-plus games at guard during his stint at Notre Dame and grooming him as a center. You know what that means, right? Versatility?! Golden. God.
For most of the preseason, Robinson has been the team's second-team center, making it somewhat conclusive that Robinson was already close. Unfortunately for Reggie Stephens' second-stint with the Bengals, Robinson quickly became light years ahead of Stephens. In terms that my science fiction brethren understand, Robinson was to The Next Generation what Stephens was to Enterprise. This is the same coaching staff that's experimenting with seven-foot-forever Dennis Roland at left guard on the second-team unit, trying to find ways for every non-starter to play every position. Versatility.
Though he a primordial lock to the make the 53, uncertainty about Robinson's standing largely diminished when reports surfaced Monday evening that Kyle Cook suffered a foot injury. At the very least Cook is out for a significant amount of time. At the very worst, we won't see him on the field until next season. Either way Robinson is a Cincinnati Bengal on September 1.
