During the 5 last 5 years, from 2007~2011 there have been 369 Defensive Linemen and Linebackers drafted.
.
86 of them were drafted in a higher spot than Carlos Dunlap (2nd round, #54 overall). Ahead of him were drafted such coveted Defensive End sack artists like Vernon Gholston (#6 overall), Derrick Harvey (#8 overall), Brandon Graham (#13 overall), Jerry Hughes (#31 overall) and Phillip Merling (#32 overall) who have combined for a total of 15.5 sacks in 184 games....compared to the 14 sacks Dunlap has produced himself in only 24 games played.
.
For these 369 defensive linemen and linebackers, I looked at the # of sacks per game they have generated as a way to compare them to see who the best pash rushers are that have entered the NFL over the last half decade.
.
Carlos Dunlap is 7th out of 369 in sacks per game (in the top 2 %)
.

Every player listed ahead of Dunlap (outside of Aldon Smith) has been to at least 1 pro-bowl.
The top 2 listed (Smith & Miller) have only played 1 year, so their #’s may drop as their #’s fluctuate from year to year. If we only look at Dunlap’s first year, he would be at 0.79 sacks per game, which would rank him as #2 overall on this list. Wow! Regardless, Dunlap looks to be something of an elite pass rusher...especially since he’s not even been the starter for the Bengals over the last 2 years.
.
Dunlap is also the lowest drafted player of everybody in the top 7. So definitely a good value there.
Conversely, I decided to take a look at Maualuga’s #’s also.
I looked at Rey’s tackles per game compared to all other LB’s drafted from 2007~2011.
.
Rey Maualuga is 28th out of 130 with 3.0 Tackles per game.
This puts him well below the top 4 (P Willis 7.1, J Beason 6.5, J Laurinaitis 6.5, J Mayo 5.8).
It even puts him below Keith Rivers who has 3.4 tackles per game.
.
Maualuga was the 16th highest LB taken (2nd round, #38 overall) from 2007~2011 but is not in the top 16 in tackles per game. He barely made the top 30. He is the 28th highest LB in tackles per game.
Poll
Carlos Dunlap...
Is an awesome, elite talent. He should be starting the pro-bowl this season if the Bengals weren’t going to the super bowl!!! (40 votes)
Is an awesome, elite talent, but sacks are overrated. (8 votes)
Is pretty good but not all that elite. Sacks are overrated so the #’s look better than he really is. (8 votes)
Is no better than Derrick Harvey...so still better than anybody the Browns or Steelers have :-) (1 vote)
Is good, but I’d rather have a sack of choc chip cookies than a QB sack!!! (4 votes)
