Last season the Cincinnati Bengals only allowed 208 yards passing per game last year, which is pretty good.

But....

Last year the Bengals got to face many subpar QB’s such as: Colt McCoy (twice), Kyle Orton, Alex Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Curtis Painter, Sam Bradford, John Skelton, Tavaras Jackson, an aging Matt Hasselbeck, TJ Yates (twice) and Blaine Gabbert.

.

Only in 4 of their 17 games last year did they face off against a good QB: Ben Roethlisberger & Joe Flacco twice each. Oh, and the Bengals were 0-4 in those games while getting lit up for a 67% completion and a QB rating over 100 (102.6).

.

Not once did they face a great QB last year....No Drew Brees, no Aaron Rodgers, no Tom Brady, no Tony Romo nor Phillip Rivers. No Matt Ryan nor Eli Manning, and not Matt Stafford.

.

Well, actually they did face Matt Stafford last year, but in the preseason. Stafford promptly torched them for 2 TD’s in 2 drives en route to a 148.5 QB rating against the Bengals as he completed 86% of his passes against them. They also faced Mark Sanchez last year in the 3rd preseason game, and while he is far from elite, he also torched them for a 2 TD to 0 INT performance and a 121.5 QB rating.

.

The 2011 season showed us that the Bengals struggle to stop non-horrible QB’s from throwing at will against them. Fortunately in last year’s regular season we didn’t have to face any many good QB’s.

.

Looking at this year, our 2012 preseason picked up where we left off in 2011 with our inability to stop good QB’s as Matt Ryan completed 18 of 21 passes for 173 yards and a TD with no INT’s in 1 half of football, on his way to a 117.1 passer rating. The Bengals broke from form and actually held Aaron Rodgers in check (except for his 2 rushing TD’s) in week 3, but that has been the clear exception to the rule.

.

Looking at the preseason & regular season games from 2011 and 2012 against QB’s who aren’t horrible (Stafford, Sanchez, Ryan, Rodgers, Flacco & Ben)...the Bengals have allowed:

137 for 201...68% completions

1692 yards....8.4 yards per attempt

13 TD....3 INT...QB Rating of 109.3

Oh, and an 0-5 regular season record against them

All of this is troubling. The 13 to 3 TD to INT ratio is very bad. 68% completions against is horrible, especially on 8.4 yards per attempt, so it’s not that they are just completing little 3 and 4 yard passes against the Bengals. And the QB rating of 109.3 is very bad.

.

I’m not sure what the culprit is? Is it losing J Jo? Is it the lack of a SS who can cover? Is it something else? The Bengals tried to address this problem by drafting a decent DB prospect in Dre Kirkpatrick with their first round pick, but he can’t stay healthy (just like the other recent Alamaba 1st round pick the Bengals drafted...Andre Smith). They’ve filled their secondary with a ton of former 1st round picks like Allen, Clements, Nelson, Hall, Jones. But whatever they are doing did not work in 2011 and is not working in 2012.

.

Looking forward to the 2012 regular season, the Bengals have 10 of their 16 games against QB’s who are good: RGIII, Peyton, Eli, P Rivers, M Vick, T Romo, Ben (twice) and Flacco (twice)

.

If game 1 of 2012 was any indication, the Bengals still have not figured out how to stop good QB’s from torching their secondary at will. And 2012 has many more good QB’s facing the Bengals than they saw in 2011. So in 2012 we could be seeing a lot of big passing games against the Bengals.

.

#1 The Bengals struggled against good QB’s in 2011

#2 The Bengals so far have struggled against good QB’s in 2012

If the Bengals play more good QB’s in 2012, and continue to struggle against them, the season will be....
