I'm sure I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but before I do, let me preface by saying that I am a fan of Taylor Mays - not because he is a great player, but because I believe he could be a great player.
My question is, at what point does Marvin Lewis and Mike Zimmer consider moving Mays to linebacker? I did a little research and his weight isn't far off from that of Lawson and Howard. I think if he could work on putting on 10-15 pounds he could definitely make the transition.
Mays is a violent hitter, the is no question about it. I hear people talking about that as if it's a bad thing, but it's not - Mays could be an extremely valuable asset to this team if used the correct way. Mays struggles in coverage against quicker receivers, no question. The problem isn't straight line speed - he has that, but he has stiff hips that prevent him from breaking with quicker receivers. With that being said, he would be very good in TE coverage due to his size, speed and the slower TE's.
There have been examples of bigger college safeties making the transition to linebacker in the NFL (Urlacher) and I would hate to see a guy like Mays who is ready and willing to lay someone out just kicked to the curb. What do you think?
