Bengals Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick Out Until After Bye Week Next Month

Stay connected for news and updates

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is telling reporters not to expect Dre Kirkpatrick in games until after the October 28 bye week.

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick hasn't had the most productive rookie season on record. He suffered a knee injury before training camp, but started began practicing leading up to the third preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Unfortunately he suffered a slight setback during rehabilitation, forcing the team to put him on the shelf with soreness, irritation and even tendinitis.

Prior to the regular season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, Lewis said that Kirkpatrick will be "rehabbing two more weeks or so before he practices again."

This is the third week.

Now Marvin Lewis has pushed that timeline back another month, telling reporters that a "reasonable timetable" for Kirkpatrick making his NFL debut won't be until at least the October 28 bye week.

That's not to say that Kirkpatrick suffered another setback. Obviously when his knee is fully healed, the rookie will need to accelerate his conditioning to get into football shape while going through full practices to absorb the playbook. If Kirkpatrick's target return isn't until the bye week, we're looking at the week nine game against the Denver Broncos for his return, missing seven games, including the next five.
