The Jacksonville Jaguars finally convert their first first down of the game, but not after facing some adversity during their second possession. Rashad Jennings returned Mike Nugent's kickoff 27 yards, after the Bengals established a three-point lead with six minutes remaining in the first quarter, to Jacksonville's 23-yard line. A nine-yard scramble and Maurice Jones-Drew nine-yard sprint around the left-edge pushes the Jaguars to the 41-yard line. It appeared that, for a moment at least, that the Bengals defense intended to stall Jacksonville with a Manny Lawson quarterback sack, dropping Blaine Gabbert for a 12-yard loss. Then Marcedes Lewis picks up 23 yards and the first down to Cincinnati's 48-yard line.
Here we go.
And the Jaguars eat chunks of yards before the first quarter expires with Jacksonville reaching Cincinnati's13-yard line. On first and ten, Maurice Jones-Drew powers himself into a mass of bodies, picking up five yards with an offensive line clearly pushing Cincinnati's front seven and establishing control. Gabbert hands off to Jones-Drew on second down and the running back picks up the first down with a massive lane over the middle, stopped by a touchdown-saving tackle from Vontaze Burfict. It didn't last. Marcedes Lewis' first down route targets the back left pylon, beating Burfict in coverage and recording the touchdown, giving the Jaguars a 7-3 lead.
