Coaching Update: McCoy Announced As Next San Diego Chargers Head Coach

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden has one less option to choose from if he's deciding to become a head coach this year.

According to multiple sources, former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator, Mike McCoy, will become the next coach of the San Diego Chargers. General Manager Tom Telesco and Chargers owner Dean Spanos wasted no time in pouncing on McCoy after the Broncos lost to the Ravens in the divisional round of the playoffs last weekend.

What does this mean on the Jay Gruden front?

Obviously, he's no longer a candidate if the deal is completed, but it also upsets the balance in Arizona, who "threw everything they had" at McCoy, intending to make him the next head coach. Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network reported on Sunday that if they can't sign McCoy, current defensive coordinator (and former Bengals player and coach) Ray Horton would be the team's primary fallback.

Additionally, the Philadelphia Eagles reportedly have interviewed former Ravens coach, Brian Billick, for their head coaching gig. The Eagles were one of the first stops on the Jay Gruden Tour, but since meeting with Gruden, the Eagles' interest has seemed to have tempered and he doesn't appear to be high on their list--for now. The Chicago Bears have an opening at head coach, but have not expressed interest in Gruden at this time.

That being said, we still believe that Gruden's future will either come down to Jacksonville or Cincinnati. The Jaguars have a meeting scheduled with Gruden, but are looking at other options as well.
