Mike Zimmer Hasn't Been Contacted About Head Coaching Vacancies

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator hasn't been contacted yet for one of the vacant head coaching vacancies in the NFL.

In a sense Mike Zimmer is annoyed, yet disappointed. Names upon names are being mentioned for the remaining head coaching vacancies and his (arguably undeserved) coworker Jay Gruden is being interviewing with two teams. Each year the subject is established and question asked. Why isn't Mike Zimmer a head coach, or at the very least, a candidate this year?

Reports surfaced last year that it was his blunt honesty that turned teams off. When he was a candidate for the vacant head coaching position in Miami last season, the Miami Herald wrote:

The Dolphins liked Zimmer’s rèsumè, and he and general manager Jeff Ireland have a good relationship. But one source said he might have been too blunt and honest for the Dolphins’ liking. Zimmer can be outspoken at times, including calling former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino a "gutless b--tard" for leaving the job without telling any of his assistants.

From 2003-2007 with Leslie Frazier and Chuck Bresnahan calling the defensive plays, the Bengals defense never ranked high than No. 19. During Bresnahan's final two seasons, the Bengals defense ranked No. 30 and 27 respectively. The Bengals fired Bresnahan after 2007 and hired Mike Zimmer, who recently left Atlanta when Bobby Petrino did what Bobby Petrino does (act like a dick).

The Bengals defense vastly improved over the course of the next five seasons, ranking in the top ten three times (2009, 2011, 2012) which is ironically the same seasons Cincinnati earned a postseason berth. Zimmer's defense has never ranked worse than No. 15.

Zimmer hasn't even been contacted this year for the proverbial head coaching position, which offers the most basic conclusion that he'll be around for 2013, the second year of his three-year contract.
