Morning Bites (10/12): Bengals struggle against inexperienced quarterbacks edition

Taking a look at the stories about the Bengals and the NFL around the internet on this fine Saturday morning.

Unknown QBs can challenge Bengals, too
Before each made it to their respective third career starts as NFL quarterbacks, they had already beaten the Cincinnati Bengals. If you know anything about the league, you know that compared to the Tom Bradys, Aaron Rodgerses, Ben Roethlisbergers and Peyton Mannings of the football universe, the mere mention of the former four names doesn't strike quite as much fear into the minds of the defenders facing them.

Cincinnati Magazine I Hello...Newman
Earlier this week, Joe Reedy of The Cincinnati Enquirer did one of his "20 Questions" sessions on Twitter, where he answers questions sent in by his followers. One of those questions was regarding which of the Bengals players Reedy felt was most under-appreciated by the fans, to which Reedy replied: Terence Newman. I thought it was an interesting response, mainly because I sensed that I too tend to under-appreciate Newman and what he provides for the Bengals defense. Last year, I even felt Newman was a liability at times, an easy target on third-down plays, particularly because QBs seemed to often avoid Leon Hall, who I actually feel is one of the more under-appreciated corners in the league (though Bengals fans generally tend to realize how strong/consistent of a player he is).

NFL Week 6 Best Bets: Keep climbing with Colts, Eagles, Bengals
Thaddeus Lewis is in a bind -- just came off the practice squad for the Bills, just started practicing with the starters and now faces one of the toughest defenses in the NFL in his debut. The Bengals can't score much on offense but if they shut down the run -- and I suspect they will -- then Lewis is in trouble. Cincy will end up scoring from its defense. The Bengals know they must start stringing wins together and coordinator Mike Zimmer will have some special stuff to throw at Lewis. The Bengals' secondary is getting a little healthier and they have a chance to exploit Buffalo up front with its injuries along the offensive line.

Week 6 Game Rankings: Brees vs. Brady highlights lackluster lineup
Just think back to the array of quarterbacks we have seen in a Bills uniform since, like, the second week of the preseason. There was Kevin Kolb still hanging in there, and a brief dance with Matt Leinart and then, with EJ Manuel hurt again, Jeff Tuel got his shot last week. Now Thaddeus Lewis makes his first NFL start after being promoted from the practice squad. And, well, he gets to face an intense defense with a dominant front four in the Bengals, a team that just shut down Tom Brady last week. Good luck with that. (Ever wonder why the Bills didn't just hold on to Tarvaris Jackson, rather than pay him to go away, especially with a raw rookie starting at QB?). Throw in Buffalo's offensive line injuries and, well, it could get ugly out there. But probably not much uglier than the late going of Buffalo's last contest at Cleveland when Tuel was rushed into service.
