It;s becoming more and more apparent that Andy Dalton is not the answer. While he is a very good quarterback, he lacks the confidence and arm strength to take this team to a championship. Regardless of the discussions about Dalton, its obvious that looking towards the future the team will most likely need to find another option.
The draft will always be mike brown's first choice, but the issue is that finding a true franchise QB takes a higher draft pick then we're going to get in the next couple years. Regardless of dalton's issues, this team is too talented to end up in the bottom 5 or even 10 of the NFL.
One option that I have personally explored is bring Cam Newton here in free agency. While the first issue may be money, it is common knowledge that the team has money saved up for a contract for Dalton, so why can't we take that money and give it to Newton instead? The next question becomes whether or he will even be on the market in the first place. With two bad losing seasons and a third on the horizon, it's possible that Newton, who has expressed his discontent with the way things have gone in Carolina many times, will want to play the field. With the talent that our team has surrounding the quarterback position on both sides of the ball, why wouldnt he take a look at cincinnati? Two major defensive players locked up for years to come, the future top NFL wideout to throw to, and a very promising rookie RB are just some of the thing the team has to offer.
I understand the chances of Mike Brown pulling the trigger on a mega-deal like this are next to none, but can't I dream about the possibilities of Cam's beautiful deep ball going to AJ week after week. He would truly make us a leitimate SB contender.
