Is it possible to discuss without arguing?

Is it just me, or is it becoming increasingly harder to post a comment without it turning into a bickering contest? It seems like when you post a simple opinion there is a high percentage chance someone will completely alter your statement in their reply, overanalyze and dissect it with statistics, or flat out try to belittle you while being borderline disrespectful. On the contrary, if you respectfully disagree with someone without any of the previous mentioned intentions, they still might get offended and start an argument. I have had the simple comment of wanting to draft a QB in 2014 somehow translated to me "bitching" that we don't have Aaron Rodgers, or Tom Brady. Personally some threads seem completely volatile; posting can be a very slippery slope.

That being said, I am fully aware that one of the worse things you can do is point the finger at others for something that you are guilty of yourself. Emeybee, MT Bengals Fan, and probably a few others have been on the receiving end of me doing the exact thing I'm writing about. For that I apologize. It will not happen again. I know the essence of this site is discussion, after rooting for our team of course. What would this site be if nobody challenged another's ideas. Hell, what would the world be without that element. However, I believe it can be done respectfully, and courteously. Sometimes you can hardly tell we are all fans rooting for the same team. I can speak for myself and say there won't be anymore of the nonsense from me.
