October was very kind to Andy Dalton as we all saw, after weeks of bad or subpar performances he shined for a whole month. I find it difficult to go on this website after a loss because most of the comments are giant overreactions about Dalton's level of play. I am of the opinion that he will be the guy to take the Bengals to the playoffs this year and win at least one game at home before going on the road. Think back to the Josh Freeman talks if you disagree with me so far when I say I trust the Bengals coaches and Dalton. He would have caused a giant controversy and after losing us a few games he would've been benched for Dalton. Josh Johnson has looked good and I can better understand fans wanting him to start than them wanting Josh Freeman. In reality though, we have only see him light up the field against second string talent since coming to the Queen City. So here is my proposition, why not draft a QB in the first two rounds next year in the 2014 draft and let there be an open competition?(Lets say that we wait until round 2 and grab Derek Carr or David Fales.) This would do two positive things for the team: 1. Solidify a starter after weeks of open competition that forces Dalton to perform at a higher level than this offseason. and 2. It would let us wait to resign him (if we would at all) and let his contract ride out. This could create drama but it would let Dalton know that we don't accept mediocre play. At the end of the 2014 season we could either keep Dalton and choose a backup between Carr/Fales and Johnson, or let dalton walk and a former draft pick could get their time to shine. I truly believe that Dalton would be forced to play at a higher level and in training camp he would stand out compared to others. This preparation could only help him in the regular season and we could end up getting a quality backup/future starter. So, What do you all think of this idea?
