The negative effect of drafting a bad QB early

Anyone who was a Bengals' fan during the 90's remembers Akili Smith (taken #3 overall in 1990) and David Klingler (taken #6 overall in 1992). The 2 early draft picks were complete busts, throwing for almost twice as many INT's as TD's as Bengals. And the toll their bad play had on the Bengals was brutal, as they compiled a 7 - 34 record before mercifully being benched for mediocre journeymen QB's.

Looking at recent drafts shows that this negative impact of drafting a bad QB early (first 2 rounds) isn't isolated to just the Bengals, but seems to be a key contributor to a team's success.

The lesson seems to be clear... it is essential that when drafting a QB early, a team simply cannot whiff on that pick, because it directly leads to a team's failures on the field.
