According to the Detroit Free Press, Smith will interview for the head coaching vacancy in Detroit.

Caldwell, the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator and former Indianapolis Colts head coach, is expected to interview for the Detroit Lions head coaching job, said John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance that helps promote diversity in the NFL.

"Will he get an interview at your place? Yes, he’ll get an interview at your place," Wooten told the Free Press. "Yeah, he’ll get an interview."

Browns looking at college, Quinn, McDaniels

It doesn't appear that Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is in play for the Cleveland Browns, despite interviewing with the team last year prior to the hiring of Rob Chudzinski. Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden has never been in play and doesn't figure to be this year either.

However, their pool of candidates continues to increase.

The Browns are scheduled to meet with Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn this Wednesday. The Browns were granted permission to interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on Tuesday.

However, Jason La Canfora with writes that the Browns want to interview Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn and Vanderbilt's James Franklin, who is a candidate for the Texas Longhorns head coaching job.

And then there was five

There remains five head coaching vacancies in Minnesota, Washington, Cleveland, Tampa Bay and Detroit.

Patriots grant Browns permission for McDaniels

Various reports have the Cleveland Browns interested in Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase (who has reportedly declined all interview requests until after the playoffs), Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Albert Breer with the NFL Network reports that New England has granted the interview request.

McDaniels was born near Akron, Ohio and played ball at Canton McKlinley and John Carroll University. So there's the whole "home town" story line here.

49ers Roman and Tomsula generating interest

There are six teams with head coaching vacancies, and there may be a seventh depending on what transpires in Tennessee. And some of those teams with vacancies are interested in San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, according to ESPN NFL Contributor and Insider Adam Caplan.

Roman has been an offensive coordinator in San Francisco since '11 and for two seasons before that at Stanford. Prior to the firing of Jim Schwartz, the NFL Network reported that he was "very interested" with the gig in Detroit. Roman also interviewed with Penn State before Bill O'Brien got the job two years ago, making one conclude that he could be in play if O'Brien, who is heavy favorite for the Houston Texans, returns to the NFL.

Vikings, Browns want interviews w/ Bowles and Gase

Along with the Cleveland Browns, the Minnesota Vikings have also requested permission to interview Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Bowles, who was a former Browns assistant from 2001 through 2004, led a Cardinals defense that finished sixth in total defense and seventh in scoring defense. The Detroit Lions are apparently interested, but haven't requested an interview yet.

The Vikings and Browns have also formally requested an interview with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, but he has declined until after the playoffs.

No resolutions yet for Tennessee Titans

It's been widely believed that Titans head coach Mike Munchak, who has amassed a 22-26 record in three seasons, would be on his way out of Tennessee. Ruston Webster is the team's general manager and will have some input as the team decides their future with a new team president and CEO, where there's a "lot of dissatisfaction", according to columnist Michael Silver. Webster is assumed safe and Munchak could survive, but there's no clear answer right now.

Jim Wyatt with the Tennessean tweets that Munchak will "spend time with Webster" and meet with Titans CEO Tommy Smith -- the son-in-law of the former Titans owner, the late Bud Adams [NOTE: Titans ownership is actually split three ways - Susie Adams Smith and Amy Adams Hunt each own a third with Bud Adams' late son Kenneth Adams III owner the other third.]

However, as of now, everyone is "in the dark."

There is a minor connection with the Titans and Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, who was an offensive assistant in Tampa Bay when Titans GM Webster was with the team for two years.

Houston Texans is Bill O'Brien's job to win

According to Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the Houston Texans are no longer "planning" to interview San Diego Chargers, and former Arizona Cardinals head coach, Ken Whisenhunt.

Houston, who fired Gary Kubiak earlier this month, had planned to have a head coach in place by Tuesday. With San Diego qualifying for the postseason, Whisenhunt isn't eligible to interview for the position until after Jan. 12. Therefore it's Bill O'Brien's "job to win."

Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer reiterated that it would be unfair to his players if he were looking at available head coaching opportunities.

Browns "pushing to interview" Josh McDaniels

The Cleveland Browns are clearly the most active in lining up candidates for their head coach vacancy. They've already requested permission to interview Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Many reports have the Browns being interested in Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and now the Browns are looking to interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Obviously the three coaches being mentioned are coordinators on teams in the playoffs, but with a bye week. Those coaches can interview on Jan. 5. Coaches on playoff teams that play during Wild Card weekend will be allowed to interview starting on Jan. 12.

Lovie Smith already a favorite in Tampa Bay

Former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, who didn't coach in 2013 after being fired last year, is already being considered as the favorite for the head coaching vacancy in Tampa Bay.

Smith spent five years in Tampa Bay as a linebackers coach under head coach Tony Dungy.

Writes Jason La Canfora with

Numerous Bucs and league sources have pointed to former Bears head coach Lovie Smith, a onetime Tampa Bay assistant, as a frontrunner to land the Buccaneers head coaching job, with former Bucs exec Rich McKay returning to the team as a team president. After helping the Falcons secure a new stadium in Atlanta, sources say McKay could get out of his deal without major complications.

Broncos OC Adam Gase prefers to wait

The Cleveland Browns are looking at offensive coordinator Adam Gase as a possible candidate for their head coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports. However, it won't happen soon if the Broncos offensive coordinator has his way.

Playoff coaches on teams during a bye week are allowed to interview for head coaching opportunities this week. Playoff teams without a bye week can begin interviewing Jan. 12.
