How the Bengals Can Improve Their Offence

The Bengals need to do a lot of work on Offense this offseason, if we want to be able to make a deep playoff run. We ended up 22nd in yards on offense, but went 10-6 because of our defence. We were bumped from the playoffs in the first round.

We only converted 34% of our 3rd down plays for first downs in the regular season and went 0/9 in the playoffs. Our 34% conversion % was good for 27th in the league. We are 21st in yards per play, with 5.2. We were 17th in redzone scoring offense as well. These are absolutely terrible numbers, but they can be improved. After looking at these numbers, I was quite surprised that we went to the playoffs the way we did. Only one team in the playoffs was worse than us at redzone scoring, and yards per play (Were were better in both categories than the Colts). None were worse than us on 3rd down.

We need bigger plays in the running game, which comes with a new HB. BJGE scares no DC and we need a HB that will. Our ability to run the ball will help us in the redzone and allow us to use PA pass to setup big plays.

We need another reliable target, other than Green. Gresham is inconsistent at best and has iffy hands, even when he is good. Hawkins was simply over-used this year, because of our dearth of talent at WR. Note we do have two young WRs, but it seems only Sanu was a big help on third downs. This could be a TE that is a big, good blocker that can catch, much like the Steelers Heath Miller. Another option is to find a big possession WR that can get open when we need him to. Getting either one of these will help our offense make big plays happen, 3rd down conversion % and our redzone scoring.

Offensive line is another need on offense. We need to get a C that can run block effectively and a LT for the future. This would keep defenders from collapsing the pocket, like in the Texans game, and will make things easier for the HB down near the goal line.

We need to find some upgrades, if we want to thrive in this offesive league. It is impossible to plug every hole on defense. An elite O will find our Ds weakness an exploit it. We need to have an offence that can do the same to their D.
