I just came across a mock draft (because I've been drinking and and I'm a freakin' mock draft JUNKIE!) on Yahoo sports, and they came up with the idea of drafting Tavon Austin. The only thing I could think was "freakin' brilliant!"Man, can you imagine? Andy Dalton has the option of Green, Austin, Sanu and Gresham? Unreal. Seriously, the growth of all of those guys would be leaps and bounds if they could work together effectively.
There are so many reasons against it. I love Jones, and think he'll be a very good player. But Austin has to be considered an excellent fit if it were to work out. People compare him to Percy Harvin, which is exactly the type of player that would fit in to this Bengals offense and just make it beast. I seriously think they would be so good they would need a nickname.
I am all for practicality, and practical wisdom says you should draft the best player available influenced by need. I think the biggest hole on the Bengals is LB (please don't bring Rey back, pretty please with sugar on top). I'm just not sure the value is there at #21 that wouldn't be there at #35, or even later. After that I think the #2 WR and safety have developmental players who could play, but neither have players you would be comfortable rolling the dice with. Iloka and Sands were taken on as projects, and if the coaching staff feels comfortable with either of those guys then the answer at safety could be on the team already, no matter what anyone else thinks. I think that neither Jones or Baby Hawk can come close to what Austin can bring to the team and how perfectly he fits in.
I realize there are many variables, and free agency will likely determine the direction the team goes in. This all may be a moot point if we need an RT and the right player falls. But man, how awesome would Austin be!
