Do they think we are idiots? Do they think we don't read other sites for Bengals news? Really?
It's time again for the annual
Mike Brown Geoff Hobson "get your hopes down" speech regarding the team's cap room. At the bottom of an article today regarding the franchise tag on Michael Johnson, Hobson said:
The Bengals reportedly had $40 million to spend under the salary cap when free agency opens March 12, but now the estimated $11 million is gone with the Johnson tag and now the next priority looks to be re-signing right tackle Andre Smith. Lewis said last week at the NFL Scouting Combine that the focus in free agency is retaining their own players, and also in the team's plans appears to be securing two of its top three cornerbacks, Terence Newman and Adam Jones, as well as veteran left end Robert Geathers, among others.
Also budgeted is an estimated $5 million for up to possibly 10 draft picks, $4 million for restricted players, as well as a $5 million reserve for injuries and incentive bonuses.
Uh, wrong. First, pretty much every report had the Bengals with $53-55M in cap room depending upon which salary cap projection you were using. Then you get the classic draft budget misnomer. It's true the rookie pool will be $5M for the team this year (higher actually once comp picks are awarded), but our 5th-7th round picks won't even really impact our cap since they will be outside the Top 51 rule. The picks that do qualify for the Top 51 rule - along with our EFA/RFA tenders - still don't take a dollar for dollar cap hit since their addition is offset by the departure of the curent 51st player and their $405k cap figure, i.e. Andrew Hawkins' $555k cap hit doesn't mean $555k less room but rather $150k less room. As for the injury and incentive bonus reserve, well that's pretty much hogwash too. The team won't spend its full cap room but you also don't need to sit on $5M at the season midpoint "just in case". You can however purposely take current year cap room into a future year in order to extend your franchise WR and QB though, but make sure you do that OK?
Perhaps Hobson could tell us why the team didn't carry forward the entire $12M in cap room from 2012 instead of the lower $8.5M. Or maybe the censors wouldn't allow it...
