I read something on NFL.com, where Adam Rank listed the biggest busts in FA history. He opened it with talk about how free agency is a time when fans get excited about the new year of Football. Everyone but Bengals fans. That really hit home for me, that other fans get excited this time of year. The best I can say is that I hope I don't get let down too much.
The Bengals have the most cap room of any team in the league, yet I feel like signing a high priced free agent is like when I consider the possibility of taking my wife out for a lobster dinner while I'm living on student loans. We've been warned to pretty much shoot down the idea of making the team any better, which I've learned the hard way not to get my hopes up for (and I still have to talk myself out of that every year). We're not even sure if they are going to bring back Smith in order to just keep the team at the same level we are at now. That sucks. The Bengals have the most money going into this, and instead of being excited, I'm scared.
I'm not asking for a miracle, but I can't help thinking that I just don't want the team to kill our current momentum. By the end of the first round, I would like our starting Safety and RT positions to be filled. It would be great if these players had talent. That seems like it should be a realistic thing to ask for. That starts tomorrow. For the love of football, make something good happen Mikey. I am sure we'll go hunting in the bargain bin again, but one key free agent would be great. Until then, I'm just scared of what will happen.
